Sonic 4 Thread

All I'm saying is, if it has less content that what people typically expected of a demo back in the 90's, and if it's really just a precursor for things to expect in the 'real' episodes while this is just a cookie cut and decorator shop rehash of stuff we've seen before, then why not simply wait and see if this is actually going to go somewhere rather than excusing them by saying episode 2 is going to be different.

Basically, this is a stripped down version of the Christmas demo of Jazz JackRabbit, and that was pretty much a full game for FREE... albeit made from bits and pieces of the real game it was advertising. I just hate how we are expected to take whatever table scraps they throw at us with a smile.

Sure, that's another way to look at it, but in that case, why should I buy this pile of overpriced shareware?

That's the thing though, it's the rehash episode. Fans like us might as well wait til Episode 2 since it's not even aimed at us as a minority.

they've been working on this game and it's only 4 fucking levels long?

what the fuck do they think they are smoking

Each zone has 3 acts and a boss act, and without the boss acts (and EGG Station Zone), it'd have as many acts as Sonic 3. Then there's 7 Sonic 1 style special stages (which I personally find harder than Sonic 3s). :awink:

It's also around the same length of Sonic Advance 1.

Sure, you can make that argument, and it applies to an extent, but that's still only 4 zones worth of gimmicks, 4 bosses, 4 sets of enemies, 4 unique sets of levelart, etc, etc.

As opposed to Sonic 3, which had 6 zones worth of gimmicks, 14 or so bosses, 6 sets of enemies, 6 sets of level art, blah blah, etc. etc. and STILL was only half a game. And of course the boss acts shouldn't count towards Sonic 4's total since the other game just throws them at the end of the last act anyway and it doesn't detract from the length of second acts.

Adding more levels isn't adding more content unless those levels actually provide something the others don't.

If I wanted to get reintroduced to the classics and lacked a Genesis I would just load up Sonic 3 in Gens and nostalgia my butt off. I wasn't interested in Sonic 4 from the start but now I'm left with negative thoughts toward the whole deal.

Speaking of deals, if I recall correctly I managed to get a pack including Descent 1, 2, their official level editor, a pack of the top 100 user made levels, and a demo of Descent 3 to boot all for 10 bucks. Now THAT was a deal.

Well the Advance 1 argument still stands

Each Act in Sonic 4 focuses on specific stuff, via Sonic Heroes in a way. Some might say a bit more than they should but w/e

Splash Hill 1 - S tupes

Splash Hill 2 - Vine swinging

Splash Hill 3 - Zip Lines

Casino Street 1 - generic pinball garbage

Casino Street 2 - Roller coaster cards

Casino Street 3 - Cannons to the extreme

Lost Labyrinth 1 - Balls, balls everywhere

Lost Labyrinth 2 - Torch

Lost Labyrinth 3 - Underwater stuff

Mad Gear 1 - like hell if I know

Mad Gear 2 - Cog wheels

Mad Gear 3 - Hydrocity 2 wall on STEROIDS

Emulators can go eat a dick. I only ever use them for hacking/boredom at school purposes. They can't provide me the same nostalgic value of playing the actual console; not even USB controllers help. Nothing like having four buddies with their own controller in the living room blowing each other up on Moo Moo Farm.
Yes it is that simple if you look at it practically. But I also see it as the ultimate slap in the face to us who have been looking for a continuation of the classics since 1994.

Majority of people who reviewed and played Sonic 4 seem to disagree. SFGHQ, Retro, etc. are a minority, as always.

It is disturbing to know that there are people who liked 2006 though and wanted more of it

why do I bother; even if Sonic 4 pulled a perfect Retro XG or Nexus, Sonic fans would still find a way to complain. Sonic games aren't doomed to suck forever, it's the fan base that is.

Including me

*buzzer* WRONG. If they did it right, they'd please the retro fanbase that they were originally aiming for. In that scenario, the only people complaining would be these people:

If I had a nickel for every time I've read a comment on the Sonic sites relating to this, I'd be a rich man. At one point, I used to like this game because back then, I thought it'd be cool. Nowadays, I've only kept it around because my youngest brother likes the tag multiplayer. Or Liked, for that matter. It doesn't seem worth it anymore, considering Transformers and TV take up more of his time, so now seems like a perfect opportunity to return it. As a matter of fact, I think I'm going to return the (physical media) games I don't play anymore.

Nah, I'm sure a Project: Sonic Retro would happen

That's a horrible example. That's a whole bunch of people trying to make a game. The more cooks you have in the kitchen, the more likely the kitchen will blow the fuck up.

You have a good point, but I still think that simply having a central gimmick that carries a stage doesn't equate to one stage being equal to another. If they manage to take whatever gimmick they decide to emphasize a stage and actually do something with it, then sure. but a lot of the stuff you mentioned is just innately lacking in stuff you can do with it. S-tubes in particular are nothing but eye candy and the same goes for zip lines the way they tend to be implemented. About all you can do with those things is spam them one after another.

Lost Labyrinth 2 is a horse of a different color. It's a gimmick stage, more mini-game than level. It's like the shooter section of Dynamite Headdy, almost bound to be some sort of Scappy level for most.

Also, if both labyrinth 3 and gear 3 have the hydrocity zone wall on crack... eh.
