Sonic 4 Project

LOSTS OF STUFF. MODS CAN EDIT FOR REASONSI UNDERSTAND.

Hey guys, some of you may remember me, but that's not the real point, I'm here to tell you about the Sonic 4 project. I'm not prospecting for helpers, because this is already running and has substance.

-Backstory-

The original initiative was proposed by Phoebius of Sonic Retro. I'm in no way saying he takes credit for any form of a Sonic 4, this is just a note for the info on it. The original concept was to make it a community project of Sonic Retro. However, after some crap about plots and other nonsense, the topic on it quickly fell to pieces. A forum was set up with more structure and preventative methods to help keep things neat.

-Initiative-

This project is based on a Sonic 4 for the community, by the community in the most classic style necessary. The game is set after Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and is projected as a direct sequel. However, this is by no means saying the project is "retrowank". We're looking at means of keeping Sonic close to it's original formula of speed and platforming, while adding refreshing new changes. Anyone (after showing their worth) may contribute to this project in any way they can. The areas, as designated by Phoebius can be seen in this nifty chart:

-Engine-

We will not be using Game Maker, Multimedia Fusion, or The games Factory to create this game. We will be using saxman's ProSonic engine as our means of creation. This engine using Motorola 68000 assembly code, the very code used in the Mega Drive, for objects. This has been tested using a port of Sonic, and works amazingly. It should be noted that this engine is not open to public distribution yet, and will be tested with private builds before that time.

I'm actually fiddling with synthesizers now, so that musician thing really caught my eye. But I'm not exactly a musician right now.

Now...the art department I can help with. Bug me on aim or pm me and I'll show you something.

Thanks for showing some interest Aero. I hope you'll make some good contributions to the project. Now, I'll have to edit this topic later because I didn't watermark stuff. The rest of the team wants to take precautions against people who will plaguerize our materials. They're right, and I overlooked that.

We generally frown on people calling their projects Sonic 4 around here simply on the basis that everyone and their cousin wants to make "Sonic 4". Also, I very much doubt that there are many people who actually could really create a sequel to S3K that actually improves on what was done in that game rather than merely replaces elements from it.

In any event, I'd support this a bit if only I wasn't sure it will eventually fail simply on the basis of precedent. I don't think I've ever seen a game-development community project that ever finished what it set out to do, and I've seen many more organized, more professional groups than the Sonic Retro forum try.

By all means though, I look forward to being proven wrong.

You do notice that I have been working on a Sonic 4 game for almost two years now, right? It was one of the most popular games at last year's SAGE. Come on. -_-

I'm sorry, I forgot you were part of Sega. ;)

Unfortunatly, you cannot steak claim to such a generic name. Also, if you were in the know, you might understand we might not even use Sonic 4 as an official name for it. Still, we don't intend for this to die, as it's by the community as whole.

How is it my fault that you didn't tell me this? I'm not going to be "in the know" about a project that I heard about half an hour ago.

I AM changing the name, but not for a while. (Not until i can get a solid, bug-free, self satisfying demo out) This is just going to be bothersome until I can get that out. (And no, I'm not just making shit up. You can ask Aerosol. He's seen the new name.)

But name bickering aside, I do like how this looks. The level artwork is fantastic. Being a community effort, though, I'm not having much faith in it.

I must say, the beginning of that level song is very smooth and harmonic; it almost makes me think of music from Sonic CD. Very lovely sound to it.

The level tiles are very clean looking as well.

My strong points tend to be programming and music creation, and though I'd offer my services in the musical department, I'm already in collaboration with someone else's project and I have my own sitting in wait.

I look forward to see how this turns out though. I've seen community projects come and fail, and I hope this game doesn't repeat that cycle.

...it isn't so much "steak"ing a claim, but more a common courtesy among game makers. I think this is the first time ive seen any group of people defend their usage of a name so.....arrogantly. A little less arrogance, a little more love please.

EDIT: oh, topic has moved on. ignore me please.

Sorry if I offended you Spike. I was trying to state a fact about what we were doing. We thought we were being arrogant, claiming Sonic 4 as our name, when we don't think we can really be the true sequel.

Also, I'm a bit disappointed by the outlook on how this project will fair. Unfortunately, I cannot say anything otherwise, except to show we can get the ball rolling with this. This is why I came to SFGHQ to tell you about the project. To help strengthen our numbers a bit. Thank you for all the constructive criticism too.

Also, yes, "steak". It was 11:00 PM, I was typing on my DS. Something was bound to be wrong. :)

EDIT: I though I'd post some cool engine stuff I just realized.

Perfect ports of physics, characters, and objects from the Sonic games can be done easily. Thanks to ProSonic, we'll be able to use the exact identical code from the MD games to do this.

I already told Phoebius that I'd be able to pitch in once or twice, when it comes to level design, at Sonic Retro. At the moment, though, I'm really busy, so I'll let you know what's up when Autumn rolls around. I don't know if I truly want to do it though, because you guys might not even make it to that stage.

Pretty much what I was saying. I know that Armada has seen my game around before, too, so I know that he was aware of it when he used the name.

I have a suggestion, though. We are both far in delevopment, and we both have respected games. Everyone hates the name Sonic 4. How about we both change our names? Like, right now?

I still remember when Rlan rejected my Sonic Velocity demo only because the name was too generic... He was like, please change it, generic names like these are lame (I think he listed a few not to use)... So I did...

It was going to be called Sonic Adventure 3... Glad I never called it that...

Actually, back in the day, there was another Sonic 4... (one of the reasons Rlan must have got tired of those names...)...

It was... I don't remember... I vaguely remember the first part of the first stage... It was tall... ugly, and stopdead...
