Ristar
I've been listening to a fair bit of ol'skool VG music recently, trying to learn certain techniques for tracking and composition etc. (geeking out really) and MAN I dunno what it is but I'm totally loving the classic Sega Arcade tunes! I got Space Harrier for Wii about 2 months ago and I love the main theme... it's pure 80's cheese in VG format and I love it. Much to my girlfriend's disdain, I've been pretty much hooked on playing Outrun recently... I must have heard Splash Wave so many times it's daft. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B1g13a-nWk Also, I should mention my favourite composer atm is Tim Follin, the guys a goddam genius - and not just cause he could make the C64's SID chip sing, but his style was fantastic. He took all the good bits of prog rock and made them listenable. How about you? Anything that brings geeky tingles?

shadowgoten
Man, I've got a folder jam packed with old school video game tracks, I've been on a nostalgia kick, and I find the songs I play to pump me the hell up, in a good way. Kirby 64 had a fantastic soundtrack, this is one of my favorite tracks though. FF5's battle at the bridge, very iconic, very excellent. I've started to realize a lot of the SNES final fantasy tracks were hardcore influenced by progressive rock, listening to these songs now I start to wonder what some of these would sound like fully realized with a progressive rock band playing it. (I already know about the black mages btw, excellent stuff) forest temple of Zelda OoT. This music MADE the forest temple, it gave such a fantastic vibe to an already trippy dungeon. This is the kind of music that really sucks you into a video game. Mario RPG music will forever be ingrained in my mind, and for good reason, all of it was Aural pleasure for my ears. What kind of SFGHQer would I be without posting at least 1 sonic track in here, this is one of my favorites, though 3&K had a fantastic soundtrack all the way through. The sound that the sega genesis produces is unique, and for some reason sounded awesome ALL THE TIME.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMY3wOJvigk&feature=related rocket knight adventures...an extremely underrated game, the whole game has a wonderful sountrack, this is just a sample. Ristar also had an all around amazing soundtrack, god I miss solid platformers ;_;. Yoshi's Island 2, one of my all time favorites, I still get that super nostalgia tingly feeling when I hear this song. I'd link more, but I'd just end up linking entire soundtracks to these games, I love too many of these songs. EDIT: Holy shit ri, that C64 track is doing all kinds of wonderful things to my ears. Double edit: dayum I'm going to have to do some looking up of Tim Follin, the man is a god with what he's constrained to. This thread is awesome, keep the links coming guys! I'll post more if wanted as well.
Hypersonic645
Ys 1 and 2 Eternal:Tension Who knew obscure games can have such awesome synthrock music. Well, it's either that or that game can do MIDI tracks so awesomely.

sonicyoda
The entire soundtrack for the Amiga game Shadow of the Beast. It's just the best, atmospheric game soundtrack I've ever heard. Proper creepy aswell. It was also re-recorded in a studio for an album called 'Immortal' back in '99 methinks. www.amiga-immortal.com was the site, don't know if it's still active. His recent stuff is really good too have you heard his soundtrack for Plok on SNES? It's lovely. no idea how follin managed to make such a convincing guitar sound on SNES hardware.I have no idea why no one has ever sampled this stuff from Toejam and Earl 2 yet. Serephim
literally too many songs in my head to count. Some that pop into my head now though.. Cave Story's soundtrack has gotten stuck in my head forever. Primarily the Egg Corridor, Grasstown and Moonsong themes, although pretty much every tune in the game is memorable so i dont know why i named those specifically. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jQQvdB5vjk&feature=related A recent NES game i looked up the music to was a game called S.C.A.T. (rofl) that i had years and years ago. (could never beat it without a game genie) Loved pretty much all the music in that game, it had that ol' Sonic feel to it (where the music almost makes the level itself) Im pretty sure nobody has put Sonic music up because it's so damn obvious, but i dont think a single retro game has as many good tracks in it as Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Favorite from sonic 3: Nothing touches Hydrocity and i laugh in the face of any fool who tries to remix it. Also, Chrome Gadget was amazing, and to this day Endless Mine still gives me serious nostalgia chills. I guess i never heard it too often but still remember it well, because it plays with something far in the back of my head. Also, when i actually play the game, i end up hanging on the Load File screen because i love the music there too. Favorite from S&K: Ummm thats a hard one. But it's either Lava Reef 1 or 2, or Mushroom Hill Act 2. Favorite from Sonic 2: Like you had to ask. Close runner up would be Mystic Cave or the 2-player Results theme. Or Sky Chase. Or Oil Ocean. Hell, all the themes in that game were good. Favorite from Sonic 1 would be Star Light Zone of course. I think its safe to assume there is no retro game soundtrack that can outdo Sonic's. At least, I've never played one.umm....Oh yeah, the old Ninja Turtles games...i always loved their boss themes and stuff. Super Mario RPG Battle Theme: One of those battle themes that just...doesn't get old. Im not sure how lol. And for a fun not-retro song that recently popped into my head one day was this song from Sonic Heroes, which had a GREAT soundtrack. It's one of the Menu themes, actually: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1UFAK3xQaQ Oh and, Shadowgoten... Yoshi's Island 2, one of my all time favorites, I still get that super nostalgia tingly feeling when I hear this song. Wow, i half expected that Yoshi's Island song to end up being this one. Very funny, nintendo.
GSF
Four words: TWO. Fuck yeah, Yuzo Koshiro. Also, online play? Fuck that. There's nothing that can feel better than plugging in the old Genesis and playing in Mania difficulty with a friend for the most epic experience ever. Then, this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsicGP2CxpE Also, there's this: http://www.bombergames.net/sorr_project/ And I'm still not able to try a 4-player co-op in Scott Pilgrim :< Hell, just check out these (WARNING - I will not be held responsible for the eventual tab trauma your browser will experience) http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/CrowningMusic/ThirdGenerationOrEarlier http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/CrowningMusic/FourthGeneration

Steven M
Soleil/Crusader of Centy Rafflesia Training Grounds Monster Area Battle 1 Battle 3 PokeMon Trading Card Game Silver Surfer Wario Blast (can't find YouTube links for these tunes dadblastit) Arena Zone Warp Zone Boss Shatterhand Contra Rebirth (they're all good remixes but still!) Castlevania Rebirth (see above) (Stage 2: Lullaby Sent To The Devil 04) (Stage 3: New Messiah 05) (Stage 5: Aquarius 07) And to veer from the intention of the original topic I want to recommend the soundtracks for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Ghost Trick - both from the newest generations of gaming, both from the same composer, but the music is full of crunchy chiptune goodness. Rawr
Megaman is gonna dominate this list for me but I'll try and vary it and just get it outta my system now - the old school Megaman games had fantastic music. Mischief Makers - Yujya!! (a personal fave its just too catchy) Phantasy Star IV - PS1 Dungeon Music 2 I will admit I don't really like the old school Phantasy Star games much, but the music is great. I loved how they took elements of this song for PSO, but this version kicks that ones ass. - was gonna avoid posting Sonic music cause its kind of a given but what the hell. My fave credits theme to any game.Lets see, what else... thanks to Machinae Supremacy I guess I've been exposed to some awesome old-school tracks through their Sidology series of videogame covers. But this one in particular I really like: I think there are more songs on there, I haven't listened to them yet but I wanted to post the title theme is all. But I bet the rest of the tracks are pretty good too! SID sounds so yummy.Machinae also did a wicked of which is also cool. While not exactly a retro game, it is made like one and thus Cave Story deserves a mention for its awesome soundtrack as well! There is a lot more I really like I just seem to hit a brick wall when it comes to picking them out because there are a lot of cool tracks on the old systems/GBA and just some downloadable titles emulating retro titles. Videogame music in general is just awesome.

Serephim
I loved how they took elements of this song for PSO, but this version kicks that ones ass. To this day, i still view PSO Ep 1-4 is the series with one of the best OSTs ever composed. Tricktrack is probably one of the main resasons, along with and Oh, and PSO EpIII's entire soundtrack. Especially that Pity about what happened to PSU's soundtrack. It was absolute poo-poo compared to the work in the PSO series. Strange thing is, it was done with the exact same team of composers....I really dont know what happened there.
Rawr
Tricktrack is amazing, I prefer the original track though. But yeah PSO had an AMAZING line of soundtracks. Episode 3 spawned a lot of my faves, and all the IDOLA tracks are brilliant. , the music adds to it. Great soundtracks all around.PSU has some alright songs but it pales in comparison to PSO. It fits with PSU I think because PSO was pretty distinct IMO and the soundtrack really fit with the atmosphere of the game while PSU was very uhh, lackluster in the style and atmosphere department when being compared to PSO. PSO 2 I hope is a lot like PSO in terms of pretty much everything save for some combat improvements I liked from Portable 2.
