Sonic Colors Thread

Speed is a main point of a Sonic game's need for skill and fast pace(if you make pacman go 2x faster, wouldnt the hardness and fun go up,but not too much to make it frustrating?).

You know the classic games weren't always about "running super fast," right? There was thing called platforming. Marble Zone or whatever it was called was fairly slow. ;P

How can you say storyline and level design is a "moot point" when it's one of the most important parts of a Sonic game.

Because it's not. :U

Agreed, the old games (Sonic 3 and Knuckles) had tiny bits of story throughout, but it didn't need to be told via complicated and long drawn-out cutscenes about friendship and magic or something. Basically a Sonic game I think works best when the story is simplistic and rather light-hearted, where you know "Oh, I have to go stop the badguy". I mean yeah, that would get boring all the time, but you're playing as a blue hedgehog that talks...how omghardcorrrrr and EPIC!!1one does a story about that need to be haha?

The Sonic games are definitely more about the gameplay, they have to be. Its not like the Mario games in a sense, which again lack the story but have some great gameplay, in that you can easily fuck it up. Mario is more simple platforming, Sonic has a bunch of momentum based physics shit going on. You have to give the gameplay in the Sonic series that extra attention otherwise you run the risk of totally effing it up. Don't get me wrong, music, graphics, story, and everything else all needs to be decent to make the overall gaming experience amazing, but I think people confuse stuff like story to have to be epic. If a game is about a simple concept don't make the story super complicated, and if its a cartoony game the graphics don't need to be realistic, and if its a game about a blue hedgehog running through some wacky environment why the fuck is the music some washed up 80s sounding dude singing into the microphone (granted this hasn't happened for a while haha 8D).

That said, I do like Unleashed and whatnot, and I love the CG cutscenes because they are usually very very nice to look at and make me wish there was just Sonic movie already. Doesn't help that I am in school for 3D Animation and stuff haha, I just love it. But even though I love those things I'm not blind to the flaws they present either. I totally can see that Sonic now is not what Sonic then was like. I guess it also helps that I grew up playing the old games too.

^^^ truth

Every game does not have to have an epic story. Sonic the Hedgehog easily told its story through the level progression.

To be completely honest...as a kid, you know i never really cared about the story. Each level was just that -- another level. You can always tell the ending of a sonic game, since you always end up in space. (half the reason why when Sonic 3 ended when i first got it for my birthday i was all like wtf??1/) Your plane gets shot down in the last game, and in this one you start with a booster, as well as all 7 chaos emeralds. Its all self explanatory, really.

Sonic Adventure did okay, and Sonic Adventure 2 pushed it a bit farther, but it still retained its own "okay we're the good guys and we gotta go beat up the bad guy" thing. When you add a bunch of super evil apocalypse plots with lava-drenched cities and characters getting killed off all dramatically and shit like its some kind of SRS BUSNS Furry RPG, shit starts getting bad. oh, and cursing too? What the fuck sega. Seriously.

"Dark and Edgy" has no place in games like sonic the hedgehog, a game thats all about green hill zones, casinos and water parks. "scary as shit" can work very well, as thats not so much an emotional thing as an atmospheric thing. (even mario can get away with that) but nobody cares if Big the Cat, Charmy the Bee or Blaze the Kitty gets shot through the chest with an ultrafrequency hypersonic pulse ray beam cannon. Just...nobody gives a fuck, i just wanna hop on enemies and roll down hills okay

I'm not really even sure what's going on, but I figure I'll elaborate more as to how much story actually matters to me in a Sonic game: The story in Sonic Adventure was good. I loved the gameplay for sure, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that I don't have fond memories of the cutscenes and watching it unfold. That being said, Sonic Adventure 2 also had a good story, but tackled it in a different way. Personally I prefer the first because the hub world (I forget what they were called in-game), allowed you to unlock stages and it ended up feeling more like an RPG, so I felt like I actually knew the characters and the world they were in. As a result, I cared a lot more about what happened. In the sequel you're tossed from one character to another and you only play the action stages/watch some cutscenes. I didn't get to explore the world, I didn't get to spend more than the allotted time with the characters, and I think there was a certain loss of wonder- of being able to actually enjoy it at your own pace, of actually liking the characters, or anything of the sort. And because you're tossed between characters and places the story doesn't seem to flow as well- it just kind of happens in front of you. Sonic Adventure's probably the one Sonic game where story was actually a really important and integrated part of the experience. Sonic Adventure 2 did well, but the experience wasn't as nostalgia-worthy. And I don't even remember what Heroes or Sonic '06 were about- although, granted, I never bothered to finish it either but that's an entirely different subject. I guess what I'm maybe trying to say is if you're going to bother to do a story, make sure you put effort into the experience and make it memorable. Oh, and have it be a good game.

Edit: Wtf's that Billy Ray Cyrus picture from?

i'm impressed. i look forward to pirating it.

YOU WILL PUT YOUR MONEY INTO IT, AND YOU ARE GOING TO LIKE IT!

Well, I know I will be anywho. I don't know how to burn pirated console games =P

But srs nao, this is looking pretty awesome. The boxart is nice, although it seems a bit busy; not bad enough to really complain over, though. Ultimately, I hope this game is as fun as it looks; if anything, they've at least got the graphics down, and it sure looks fun!

It's a shame this isn't for the PS3/360, it could have looked so much better.

Even though it's technically not Owl City, I hear ya, Sockman. Just too synth-electronic-popish for my tastes. It does kinda remind me of said group's music. Music aside, I might actually purchase this. However, I think I might buy the DS version, considering my past experience with Wii Sonics has NOT been favorable sans Brawl (Lol, Brawl was alright and it's made by Nintendo, no duh!). Then again, I suppose I might have to buy and try *because there's no such thing as a demo for Wii's that I know of* the Wii version. At least I can try out the DS version before buying thanks to the Nintendo Channel on the Wii.

I had now idea that Owl City was doing music for Sonic games now.

Fuck that noise.

*facepalm*

At least it isn't Linkin Park.

Honestly, this game's visuals astound me. But im absolutely sick and tired of Sonic games literally running on rails now. I mean seriously. They were introduced in SA2 because it was cool, but now it's just getting out of hand.

You dont even have to gather momentum before jumping on them anymore, they all have speeders and sonic can somehow just generate thrust behind him if those aren't present. not to mention you dont even have to balance anymore. There's just no gameplay anymore.

I can agree there. Grinding was one of the better aspects of SA2/B, IMO, because in that game it actually was fun. It could be used as some way to build up your speed or just make it through a section of a level faster. Hell, that or maybe it just might be or lead to another path in the level. But now, it's just not used for that. Heroes took the first stab in it's gradual death. From Heroes onward, grinding was just not as fun as it was in SA2/B. And it grew duller, and duller... and duller. Unleashed just so happened to prove how dull it was. It was dull to the lowest possible extreme. In some cases in that game, esp. in Eggmanland, grinding had actually become somewhat of a chore. Grinding is NOT fun when it's necessary; Final Chase/Rush from SA2/B are my only exemptions from that statement. Grinding has been beaten to a pulp by all these past games. It's. Just. Not. Fun. Anymore.

Edit: But that doesn't change my opinion of the game. I'll still give it a try when the opportunity comes.

It's certainly autotuned up the wazoo.

Is this what kids are into these days? Genuine question. Cause when I was a kid and people wanted to market stuff to me, they used rock, or rap, and cool lyrics that you won't hear on PBS.

All the "kids" I talk to claim to hate auto-tune, and yet SOMEBODY out there is buying all of this shit and letting the record companies know that MOAR AUTOTUNE = MOAR $$$.

If you saturate the media enough with it, and if it resonates with popular youth mindset, it will sell. Even if "it" so happens to be "someone recording themselves shitting" AKA "Ke$ha".

I'm usually not the type to say "POPULAR MUSIC IS GHEY, OLD STUFF IZ BEST11", but as a DJ, I get frustrated with some of the garbage I have to play because it's a popular request.

ON TOPIC:

I want to get the Wii version only because it looks so damn purdy. I just have to drag my ass into a GameStop and preorder it. I just feel a little self-concious, though, about being a 21 year-old man strolling into a video game store and pre-ordering such a game. (And getting the ridiculously awesome hat when I pick it up. :D)

YOU'RE MY FAVOURITE DEPUTY

I have to admit, I'm getting the old feeling of cautious optimism that I had when I saw games like Sonic 06 and Sonic Unleashed and what have you - you remember that? When you were almost looking forward to the game and then WHAM they hit you with the latest theme/gimmick? But really, I think little aliens doubling as power-ups isn't that bad an addition to the game, and it genuinely seems like they know what they're doing with this game. Overreliance on grinding aside.

That said, who else isn't going to touch Sonic Rush 3 with a barge pole?
