UltimateSonic
I'm not sure if this is in the correct forum, but I think I made the right choice ; I just thought that I'd introduce myself because I'm new to this site. I just want to share my story and how I came to this site: I've always had a dream to make some Sonic fangame. I have tried many programs, GameMaker, TGF, MMF, Dark Basic, Dark Basic Proffesional, RPG Maker 2k/2k3... In fact, years ago it was this very site that inspired me. I wanted to create a Sonic fangame from its variety of resources! Years ago, I tried to create a Sonic game with TGF and failed miserably. I deleted everything that had to do with that project and moved on. Years later, I am now in college. My roommate has Dark Basic Professional on his laptop. He said that I could use it to make a 3d game! I found it confusing at first but I overcame many obstacles! I had pretty much a full sonic 3d movement engine and had animated lots of 3d models. I even attempted to make a Sa2 Eggman from an oldschool Eggman model I found on the net. (Though he doesn't look to good in my opinion). I had been working on it for months and when the time to test it came on other computers.... It was a failure. You have no idea (or maybe you do) how that felt. I felt rejected. So close of achieving my dream (In 3d no less!) and I had been rejected by the software. Now I just have a bunch of animated 3d models sitting in my computer using Milkshape. I felt so bad and was just wandering Sonic sites when I stumbled across this site again. I felt... renewed... like I had hope. I know for a fact my Roomate recently bought MMF (or rather his Dad did!) Now that I am older and know more about game making. Maybe I can achieve my dream with MMF! Maybe I can somehow mix in my 3d models to make good cutscenes or something! I dunno I think Jamagic does 3d games too but I don't know if its any good so I'll stick with MMF for now. Is MMF powerful? I haven't even messed with it yet. I'm so glad that I've come back to to this site. When I found this site, I caught myself thinking... maybe... just maybe I can achieve my dream someday... So hello guys!
hRook
Hey. And no, MMF isn't going to be as powerful as a runtime engine you create yourself.
wesker
Welcome to the forums and good luck on your future projects. (What was wrong with your models? You couldn't get them to work in Dark Basic? You might of had to change the format or something (.x or .dbo I think)
Damizean
Use Blitz Basic instead, it's easier to get stuff done and coding is a lot more fun than Drag and Drop
UltimateSonic
Thanks guys, and my models worked 100% but my DarkBasic Pro games wouldn't run correctly on any other machine But MMF is a powerful 2d game maker? It looks like alot of people are having fun with it! It looks fun
LarkSS
If you still have it, maybe you could release it here to see if it'll work on anyone's comp here and we may be able to work out a solution. Sadly, I couldn't help since I looked at Dark Basic and was badly confused and I still have no experience in actual 3D game making yet. I'm sure some of the people here can help you though. And welcome to SFGHQ. =) Edit: Heh, how could I forget to answer this. Yes, to me MMF is rather powerful if you learn all of its functions well, but it can't compare to designing your own engine using a different program like Dark Basic I believe. I also don't think MMF works too well with 3D, but it has been done before. ( Sonic XTreme Remix )
SupaChao
Wuddup. If I recall, DB has to be compressed before you pass it out as a game; or you missed packing some files, theres many possabilities =p I've used DB myself; disliked it greatly. =/ MMF, pretty good. xD Enjoy your stay. Rael0505
I'm not good at these posts, so I'll just say welcome to the forums. And yeah, MMF is good.
UltimateSonic
Nah, its gone but Blitz Basic caught my attention. If that doesn't work I have a very good feeling about MMF. Its time to make a new start! ^.^ Everyone seems so nice here too.

Clwe
Wow, that's an impressively long introduction post =P. Welcome to SFGHQ. *chips in with his own opinion on MMF* MMF (and the recently released MMF2) are quite powerful 2D game makers. MMF's main strength is that there's no coding involved, save for expressions/calculations. It's pretty easy to pick up and learn, but at the same time you can achieve a lot with the built-in 'commands' (all accessible with a few clicks). I would also argue that it speeds up the process of making a game...unless you're dead hot when it comes to programming =P. I would recommend MMF as a middle road between 'template-based' game makers (RPGMaker, RPG Toolkit) and the more complex ones that use scripting languages (DarkBasic, Blitzbasic). Damizean
Thanks guys, and my models worked 100% but my DarkBasic Pro games wouldn't run correctly on any other machine But MMF is a powerful 2d game maker? It looks like alot of people are having fun with it! It looks fun I prefer Gamemaker (and most people who deeply tryied GM, ended up liking it better), since it's cheaper (16€ against 200€), there's no need to do a lot of workarounds when it comes to do complex programming and there's more stuff built-in. Also, there are some basic Direct3D functions and there are lots of 3D dlls you might like, check out the Game Maker Forums. If there's anything I'd say MMF wins, is in the actual editor. I think Mark Overmars should make a decent one, because he's been using the damn same since... ever.
MistakenEvil
I know I don't normally jump into coming/going threads, but this feels appropriate to me: we've finally gotten our internet connection re-established and I can come here regularly again. ^.^ So... welcome to the forums, and hello everyone (again)! I'm glad I'm here, and I'm happy that I made someone happy for this site inspiring me I would recommend MMF as a middle road between 'template-based' game makers. Hmm thats nice! I also tried Blitz Basic's demo and didn't like it at all. I think its time for a new start. I'm switching back to 2d and will be using MMF to power my dream. I just started messing around with MMF and its really neat! Its not hard to understand either! But of course, I'm counting on you guys to help me too ^_~ As for my 3d days... well maybe I can make cutscenes or something with my models... If I can ever figure that out. UltimateSonic
Wait what? More Dark Basic compilers or more "basic" as in simpler ones out there? Either way it seems like I would be sticking to MMF now and the more I think about that, the better I like it
