Sonic 4 Thread

Ok guys according to the sonic stadium the game has been delayed untill late 2010 to "continue development".

Never thought I'd see the day they held a Sonic game back. Don't they have a quota of like 3 Sonic-related games per year? Or have they hit that already? Or is this number 3?

Good news.

They must have realized they've fucked up naming the game Sonic 4 and having it be the absolute worst 2D sonic game they've done ever.

Edit: at least, in its own Context. Stuff like Riders doesn't count. They named the game Sonic 4 and it looks like the pondering phase of the first sonic rush. Nothing looks complete except the backgrounds, and even that looks unfinished...things like the parallax just looks lazy as hell. It looks like a fangame. Sonic XG, Emerald Ties, Nexus, and about 6 other games i could name right now could be called "Sonic 4" and it would be far more believable than this title. Hell the MUSIC is even halfass. At least Sonic Advance 2 was an effort...

Im happy they're delaying it, but i doubt anything significant will come of it. This is a profit sellout, nothing about it even remotely says "we're trying to impress people". Well....except for this announcement. Its the only even remotely promising information they've shown or announced about the game.

Important things from the gamespot interview with sega:

1) They are going to change whole sections of levels to make them more momentum based.

2) They plan to get rid of the floaty jump physic (thank you SEGA!!!)

I think today is a sucess on sega's part as they acknoledge they can make the game better by extending the date.

Said link is here. Really, though, what're they getting an extra 2-3 months? And then also porting it to iPhone? What are the chances they actually fix anything and release a touchscreen/accelerometer-based version that doesn't suck? Least they're trying, though- and the Holidays are an amazing time for sales.

Oh great they are doing the old lipstick on a pig routine. The gimmicks are shit, the graphics are lame, the music sucks, and the whole thing is a rehash. I don't expect much good to come from this delay.

Just drop the name Sonic 4 release this as a Rush game. Apologize for being idiots get a team together that knows what they are doing and try again.

Edit: According to their interview it was said the fans loved Rush. Fucking idiots don't get it.

Oh please. The extra time is likely to ensure it works on the other two platforms, i doubt anything will change.

they're gonna need like 5 months to fix this game up into something decent. But like Aaron said, at least they're trying. Or acting like it.

This hasn't anything general with Sonic Rush games. They were awesome.

I don't understand why do you say that Rush games were bad. Because you didn't like them? That's pathetic.

Rush games where awesome in another way.. old classics are more of platforming and momentum.. Rush is a racing game in 2D, where its fun to practice speedruns and going as fast as possible.

I think 2-3 month's is good enough for a 2d game. They really need to make the physics better. I think that's the only thing that matters for me. and spinning legs don't fit modern sonic :(

I know that, I just don't understand why some people say that Sonic 4 is Sonic Rush 3. It doesn't have stuff that made Rush series cool.

Gimmicks are shit? Green Hill doesnt have gimmicks, emerald hill doesnt have gimmicks... Splash hill does.

Why not say this of Sonic 1 or 2 ?

Graphics are lame? Wait to play it in HD TV, I'm sure you'll change ur mind.

And in General, can you just wait to play iot before complaining about gameplay? T_T

My mistake I thought it was made by the same people that made Sonic Rush. Oh wait it was your mistake.

I didn't say the Rush games were bad but they certainly aren't worth the title Sonic 4 and neither is this. Rush games do have a series of problems though which I do not care to get into.

Kirs GHZ had swings and EHZ had corkscrews. First levels aren't supposed to have too many gimmicks so that the player can get used to playing the game without the added challenge of gimmicks. Plus I was talking about the game as a whole not just Splash Hill Zone I don't know why you though I was referring to only Splash Hill Zone.

I didnt though that. I was just making an example.

I mean, apart of the famous mine cart, why the rest of gimmicks sucks??

It's just... we (not me really) reached a no-sense point of contradiction.

A lot of fans says 'this sucks' and 'this other thing sucks too', when they were also in Genesis games and when they asked for that long time for a classic 2d Sonic game.

People complains only for complaining and I have the impression that noone really thinks abount anything before talk.

They ask for things, and when that things are given to them, they still complain.

I just get really angry with sonic fan base.

Not my best morning, sorry xD

Rehash gears in mad gear, lame pullies that are way over used in games, corkscrews which I've never liked, the mine cart, rehashed spring loop from Casino Street. Over used speed pads the fact that the graphics in many cases are 3D replicas of 2D Sonic game levels. Rehashed badniks. Over use of speed pads. We all make great classic style fan games here because we know what made the original games great. Its all rehash gimmicks, graphics, everything and to me that sucks. Maybe it just doesn't bother you that we've seen this all before and better before. It bothers me.

No. People critique fangames here based off of footage of gameplay and screens. This is a fact. Why should a professional company be any different? This is such a weak argument to use at this place.

The

, actually looks pretty decent, however, it skimps on quite a few of the bad things people are complaining about: the excessive booster pads (which were barely seen in Sonic 1, 2, 3 or S&K), the clusters of springs, and it's of note that they chose not to include any of that second/third act bull (although that's arguably in later levels). It's just incredibly lazy and regardless of the fact that it's nothing like the old school games it looks boring and glitchy. And even still, right around 0:23, if you just let go of the controller, you can just bounce your way all over the place. Not to mention there's two speed boosters within 2 feet of each other on a semi-loop- that just tells me the physics engine is horrific or something.

But, again, let me reiterate this: we make summary judgements from gameplay footage and screenshots all the time for fangames on this forum. Why in the world do people treat a professional company different and suddenly desire to "wait to play the game?"

....corkscrews which I've never liked..

Lol I noticed that.

But it's cool because I get what your saying Overbound; it's just a big rehash. The only thing we can hope out of sega is that they uncrap the game as much as possible in the few months they have before it comes out and LEARN from their mistakes this time. Then, they can apply what they've learned from this game and make episode 2 great.

I dont care about what people use to do here while its about something that people didnt think too much.

With screens you can complain about graphics, with videos, about level design and gameplay, but for the gameplay... you cant know for sure if you'll have fun with it or not. Maybe you hate the homming attack or the gimmicks showed, but who told you it will not be fun all together (music, graphics, controls..) ?

We've been over this several times in this very thread. No on cares. Quit nitpicking about the way we complain about things. It seems like the default response when people have nothing to add to the topic.

If we don't talk about the game until we play it, the topic would play out like this. "New game comin' out guys!" "Ooh neat, thanks for telling us" Thread over. I much prefer this method.

Yes Tentril you are right. If we aren't even aloud to voice our opinions good or bad then there is no point in having this thread. In fact if its ones feeling that people should just wait till the game is released than by even posting they are being rather hypocritical. Because they don't even want to talk about the game until its released.

You know this is the most ironic thing Ive heard on this forum in a long time. Thanks for that.

Actually, yes, those zones did have gimmicks. You have to understand that Sonic the Hedgehog was quite unique in its lifetime, so basically the whole game could be called a gimmick. If you want to be specific though, it had collapsing platforms, breakable walls, swings, and those spinny spikey thingies. Might have missed one, actually. Just because Sonic 1 used gimmicks that became normal to every other game doesn't mean it didn't have them, because it most definitely did. Emerald Hill zone had corkscrews and hidden passageways in the walls. Not much, no, but when it was released corkscrews were awesome as hell. I dont believe corkscrews were ever used again in the genesis series outside Emerald Hill. (So i really dont understand the useless "hate" for them around here. They were only used once.)

You can have as many gimmicks as you want. It doesn't mean they're good ones, and it doesn't mean it makes the stage better. You still have to know what your doing. Sonic 4 doesn't seem to do that.

Graphics are lame? Wait to play it in HD TV, I'm sure you'll change ur mind.

They would be pretty if one of us made them. The Genesis series, the Advance series and the Rush series all had amazing backgrounds. This game is uglier than all of them, but uses a 3D engine on Next-gen consoles...and runs in HD. NO excuses.

And in General, can you just wait to play iot before complaining about gameplay? T_T

Okay look, most of us here have been playing Sonic the Hedgehog games since we were 6. Some of us even make them. We don't have to play the game to tell the physics suck and the level design is garbage. Ive seen the first level and ive seen some of the last. It doesn't seem to improve very much.

With screens you can complain about graphics, with videos, about level design and gameplay, but for the gameplay... you cant know for sure if you'll have fun with it or not. Maybe you hate the homming attack or the gimmicks showed, but who told you it will not be fun all together (music, graphics, controls..) ?

You understand someone is playing those levels in the videos, right? Usually these videos are referred to as "gameplay footage". People generally decide if they want the game based on these videos. Your argument doesn't really stick.

Ive heard the music. Worst sonic music Ive ever heard. (no, seriously. In fact its quite bad for even a normal game. Prime example? Fans do better.) Ive seen the graphics...pretty during stills, looks medicore during gameplay. Controls? Everyone complains about the horrible jump, and you can look at a gameplay video and see the physics engine at work; fans have programmed better. There really is nothing to defend here.
