As in, don't write 'so Sonic blows up Eggman's base and now Eggman's built a huge weapon for revenge, and you have to stop it, that's it really', or similar. If it's well written with an appropriate sense of occasion, it can be as simple as you like. It worked for Sega in their Megadrive days just fine.
