Aaron C-T
"Surprise! The memory storage media used on the Sony PSP -- the Universal Media Disc (UMD) -- is deader than Elvis... at least as a format for home video releases. According to a Reuter's story this week, most major movie studios are slowing, or have already halted, production on movies released on UMD. Sales have been tremendously non-existent in the year since the PSP's launch. Have to say "I told you so" on this one. No one wants to buy a DVD of a favorite movie and then shell out another $20 for a UMD of the same title, just to be able to see it while on the go -- especially if there are ways to copy DVDs to Memory Stick (albeit illegally), which also are readable by PSPs. And even if Sony releases a set-top UMD player, nobody is going to switch to that format when the quality of UMD movies is a step down from that of DVDs. Speaking of movie formats, the war for the next version of home video is in full swing, as you're undoubtedly aware. In one corner are Sony and company with their Blu-ray Discs, In the other corner are Toshiba and its cohorts backing HD DVD. The main difference is Blu-ray will hold much more data: 25 GB vs. 15 GB. These formats will offer true high-definition video, which current generation DVDs do not. Standard-definition is considered 480 lines of resolution, while HD is at 1080. Put it this way, if you have HDTV via cable or satellite, you can definitely tell the difference between watching "Any Given Sunday" on DVD, and the Super Bowl in HD. " Read that on Road Runner's Bloglike, which I can't post because.. well yea, Time Warner is crazy. Can't really say it's that much of a surprise. At least there are good games out by now, as opposed to when it first kicked off and UMD videos were the main things selling. Comments? Nananana-booboos? Rub it in their faces? Anyone upset here? Asuma
I knew it wouldn't last. That's what portable DVD players are for..
Aaron C-T
At least it still has widescreen porn. Which looks alot better than you'd think I might add. . . . I don't actually have a PSP, but I found a program to get videos to and from the PSP, and well.. my friend decided the widescreen was good for porn. I don't see how parents can not see how people's minds work I mean wtf really. And the thing has friggin surround sound headphones. Although I'm getting off topic, and there's already a topic for this kinda thing. >.>
Gamerdude
I knew UMD would fail the moment I heard about it. Ever since Sony basically created the CD they think they can shove any format down our throats and think we'll accept it with no questions. MidimanNull
W.Screen porn is pretty damn clear *ahem*. however, its much cooler when you have 2 widescreen monitors.
wesker
For a while I heard that UMD's were going to come packaged in with the DVD for $5.
Pheonix Gamma
when "universal" is used to describe a media storage thing, you expect it the be, ya know, universal. As in, it works on more than just a handheld that isn't that great. When it comes to that kinda stuff, I don't trust Sony (all those damn ATRAC CDs I made can't be ripped, so when my harddrive was reformatted and I wanted to put my tunes on it, well...I was quite mad) And of course, they cost way too much. Why spend 20 bucks on a UMD movie you're gonna watch on a small screen, when you can watch the same movie for about the same price on a large screen? DimensionWarped
And if Sony actually expected UMD to be successful... well, this just goes to show you a lot about BluRay.

Eraysor
Bluray=t3h console UMD Yup I think the main reason UMD failed is because everyone knew it was pointless anyway.
Aaron C-T
Not so much that everyone knew it was pointless. It just idiotic, if I remember correctly there were selling pretty well when it first came out.. or wait.. maybe there were more UMDs than games when it first came out. I forget which. Chao Helper
Gay. The only UMDs I'd buy would be Spiderman: The series and Ghostbusters 2...which I have on DVD.
VectorSatyr
As usual, I was neutral to this Sony product. This news neither gratifies me nor surprizes me. HD-DVD has my vote, if you ask me.
Perfect Chaos Zero
HD-DVD, UMD, Blu-Ray, whatever, they can kiss my ass. AVI format downloaded off of bittorrent, for the friggin' win. That said, the UMD was just a silly idea, period. It had no other use than on the PSP, there's just no reason what-so-ever to bother with it. DimensionWarped
Yeah um... PCO, an HD-DVD could store about... oh, I don't know... 35 hours of AVI files compressed at about 700 megs per 1.5 hours (I only make that comparison because... the typical movie I download is about 1.5 hours and 700 megs)? Remember, it's a storage medium... not a movie format.
Eraysor
The only UMD I have for my PSP is Spiderman 2, which was a freebie they sent out from the official PSP site.
Serephim
I seriously think UMD only exists because Sony knew they were anal'ed by Nintendo when they beat'em to the tiny disc idea.
