a quick, console related question.

I just have a question. Once answered, i hope this topic doesnt turn into a console war.

Anyway. If Sony shifted more PS3s, then would game prices lower? If there are more gamers to buy the games, surely the prices wouldnt be so high right? And one of the complaints of the PS3 is that its $60 for a game..on average. and alot less for the Wii. Maybe if Sony concentrated on shifting as many ps3s as possible instead of trying to snag exclusives, they'd start making more money? Just a thought.

Let me re-iterate the opening statement. ITT, we talk about Sony making money with the PS3. Specifically money making. no Sony vs The World crap. please. i just want an answer to my question.

Actually with a new product launch they can't lower the price until they atleast make back the costs in R&D, thats normally when a consoles price drops.

Besides aren't they losing money on each system?

Exactly. They don't make price cuts until well after recouping their costs, and they're losing a lot of money (or at least, SCE is. Sony as a whole still makes profit from their other products and divisions)

Titles aren't going to lower in price. Thats one of the things Microsoft and Sony deliberately wanted... that is to say, raise the average price of a game (not just the initial release price either, I'm talking an increase all over the board including preowned titles and the greatest-hits equivalents) by ten dollars.

Its supposedly to make up for the steadily increasing costs of game development.

Most of the time, when a console is sold, the company looses money on the console. The majority of profits come from the games sold. I think with the Wii, Nintendo does get a profit with the system though.

Yeah they designed the Wii to make money on day one. Thats where the graphics/processor and dvd capabilities take a hit.

Games used to go up by like 10 bucks every new generation, with the exception of this one. Games never go down in price unless they become old or used, it's always been that way.

True, I don't know how much my parants payed for Chrono Trigger, but I certainly remember them complaining about it. Of course, that was to augment the cost of producing the actual cartridges, whereas production of the various popular discs are measured in cents.

oh and some games have tried pushing the price. This generation has had to have had the most variable price range I'm used to seeing.

Anywhere from 40-70 dollars depending on game and console.

Wii is the console of the future, small, cheep, quiet, and can access the internet while having Xbox 180 graphics at the same time. Metroid Prime 3 is going to be awesome. Smash Bros Brawl is going to be awesome. Super Mario Galaxy is going to be extremely awesome, and BTW its the only game on Wii with Next-Gen graphics.

Xbox 360 on the other hand is the console of hardcore gaming, inbetween lame and not lame, but still powerful enough to get just plain kickawesome games like DMC4, FFXIII, Crackdown, Force Unleashed and GTA4.

PS3 is the console of brainwashed idiots, who gave in to the high price while believing the retarded advertisements of Sony that they just bought the system of the future when indeed they only bought an overpowered Fusion Oven with Blu-Ray technology that will never be used because DVD's are cheeper and do the job just fine. They will get very awesome games, but if you went with the 360 chances are you will get them anyway.

I go with Wii because its cheaper and gets any game that Miyamoto decides he wants to crap out of his holy genius anus.

I don't know what a "console of the future" is, but, to me, the Wii seems much more a console of its time than of all times. It brings something to the table that has been brought before, but the consoles of now were severely lacking. I wouldn't call that innovation since it's not all that innovative; more so, it's experimentation. Also, it's fairly economy whenever the other two choices are more expensive than many would like. I'm not saying that in 10 years Wii games won't seem so great, I just don't think the Wii has sparked a whole new branch or era of consoles.

Also, I don't think the argument of whether DVD's are going to be virtually phased out fairly soon exists: they are (higher TV resolutions demand it). The question is by what? Last I heard, Blu-Ray discs had taken the lead because they're the choice of several porn manufacturers. However, it doesn't seem like the question's going to be answered in the time the PS3 would benefit from it.

spike. we're having none of that in this topic. NONE. PM him if you must, be please, keep your bashing out of this topic for pete's sake!

now, about porn companies (well, movie companies in general) and their love of blu-ray. say the halo movie come out in a relevant amount of time, and it just happens to be freaking awesome, and it's released on blu-ray instead of dvd. Does anyone think this will spur even 360 owners to just buy a ps3 becausee of its usefulness as a cheap blu-ray player?

An even better question would be if enough blockbuster films were released on blu-ray first (or exclusively), would the ps3 see a huge jump in sales?

I'd say no. Sony's primary demographic for Playstation always has been and always will be teenagers and college students. Most teenagers and students aren't hardcore video-philes, so most of them could care less about Blueray. As blue ray disks start selling more, more BR players will ship at lower prices, but that won't say anything for the PS3.

Using a console as a movie player just isn't revolutionary anymore. It isn't the buzz feature it was with the PS2.
