LarkSS
Have you tried Blender? Also, make sure you look at plenty of 3D modeling tutorials before you decide if it's something you really want to work with or not.
cyborg_ar
blender == awesome, it's definetly worth the time you need to spend to learn it
Asuma
Blender == Fail. I'm sorry, but it's interface is horrible. It's good for what it does, being a free 3D program. However, I find 3D Studios Max better.

LarkSS
I don't even like 3dsMax's interface that much either. xD
Ristar
apparently wings3D is quite good.
Aaron C-T
Blender 3D is a good, free start. If you can find a crack of Maya, that'll be worth it, though as going from Blender to Maya can kind of be a pain.
Andrew
It's funny how Maya and 3DSMax are owned by the same company now.
DimensionWarped
Yeah, it is funny. I've always used 3ds max. Forget about buying any of the professional tools though. They really ought to consider releasing a hobbyist license. If you are like me though, you can always screw the rules. I don't have that kind of money. Asuma
You can get a student license for 14 months, which is silly in my opinion. I;ts like 200 something. They should release a non-commercial or at least a cheaper license for hobbyist like DW said. Could always try XSI Mod or Nevercenter's Silo. The professional version is only 129 bucks. Dr. Mecha
It depends, Blenders is good for UV and texture creating. However, it mostly for beginners anyways. Real Professionals use XSI for it quick smooth and superb animation and rendering, but that is the most expensive 3D animation software on the market. Asuma
You don't have to be a real professional to use any 3D software. It depends on what you do with software. After all, you are the 'god' or your 3D world.

"real" professionals are adept at all sorts of 3D tools. Softimage tends to be more popular among movie makers while max is used a lot in the game making community. Maya falls somewhere in the middle though. The humorous thing about it is that Softimage too is owned by autodesk... though neither Maya nor Softimage started that way. I'm beginning to wonder if Autodesk shouldn't be broken up by anti-trust.
Guest Shadix
Thats right... I totally forgot about the buyout of Maya by Autodesk... Good Grief, they really do have a monopoly on 3D modelling tools.
Asuma
Maya is more geared towards animation. Most companies that produce 3D movies uses Maya.
