Slightly related does anyone else think Crush 40's gone way down since Sonic Adventure 2/part of Heroes? I don't even like anything they do anymore. I actually don't have a problem with splash hill's song... though a few parts don't really sound sonic-esque, it's not bad at all.

While we may not be in direct competition with each other, we're still competing with our own standards to make something original, a product of our own work. I don't know about you, but I feel like if I were to take someone's graphics without asking I'd be failing at producing something myself, and I'd no longer be able to say I'm proud of my work. Everyone in this community is competing to make the best possible project himself. Personally, while I don't mind borrowing assets from official SEGA art if necessary, I simply can't take graphics someone else has made and put it in my game. It feels like cheating. I feel like I can't show it off and be proud of it and call it my own if it's using art contributed by people outside the developing team. That's why I feel so strongly about this - I have to be able to call it my own if I want to feel like I've accomplished something. Nieves, I understand that you don't see things that way. You're not striving to compete with us for attention, you just wanna use stuff. I'm talking to DW on AIM and he's telling me that we should have more public resources in our community. We should have more to give, not just keep all of our best work to ourselves. But it sounds like you just want to take, you have nothing to give. It sounds like you just want to combine the best of everyone's games into your own game because you're too lazy to learn to do anything yourself. It's frankly a slap in the face to all of us who put actual effort into what we do. I'm all for releasing work for public, but not before I even design my game or the levels they're intended for. You should at least have the decency to respect people's wishes. As far as I can tell you're just a mooch who has nothing to offer for us. You want to take everything we have but don't want to give us anything. And I'm inclined to believe you won't have much original content in your game, if anything at all. You want a good game without putting in any of your own work. Thievery is the biggest offense in this community. If you're saying you're going to stick around only to see what else you can steal from us, you're out. And giving credit is still stealing. You can warn me you're going to break into my house and steal my HD TV without permission, but that doesn't mean it's not stealing.

Chaos Rush, I really dig the background! And that engine looks incredible Azu, it's perfect. The boss battle and custom weapons are done really well too. I can't wait to see more from this project. Here's something I did a while ago that I dug for in my photobucket. Shooting star. It was made for my own project, back when I was using the ice background for it. It was part of some story element, but I don't know if I could find any use for the idea anymore in Emerald Ties. Still, it looks pretty.

Nieves, keep in mind that Hunter's (hrook) music is something he made completely from scratch and something he OWNS the rights to. So far your only argument has been "well you guys take SEGA's graphics sometimes so you can't be mad if I take yours too" but that really doesn't apply here. I don't blame you for not knowing, but I want to clarify because you addressed me as two different people in your post. So you basically registered here... so you could tell us you were going to steal our work to show your cousins and there's nothing we can do about it? I just want to reiterate myself and say that some of my backgrounds are a result of years of work. See this background? This is what it looks like as of a few months ago. And hell, it's still not complete. Here's another screen of it showing more of the background with the mountains/water. It's a little older (as you can see with the snow palette, yuck), but it's still fairly recent. THIS is what it looked like in 2007, when I first started it. And take a look at the indoor background: This is as of a few months ago. This is what it looked like a year ago, when I first started it. See how much it's evolved since I started it? What I have now is literally a result of YEARS of work and constant modification of the original attempt. And it looks much better than it did because of that. I don't want someone using it without my permission (especially if my project hasn't even been released yet) if I've put years of work into it. I'm not SEGA, I don't crank this shit out. I don't want my game to be in competition with that of someone who is using my graphics against my wishes. Edit: and to clarify, this is not the only background that is a result of years of work. All of my work is. I could post more before-and-after's, but I'm frankly worried of posting any more because you might just steal it.

ITT Nieves doesn't know how to make good graphics himself but he still wants to make a decent game so he wants to be able to take other people's work and use it. My basic problem with that is this: I spend literally months on some of the background sets I make for Emerald Ties because I want it to be one of the best fangames out there. Let's say this Nieves guy is going to take some of my graphics and combine stuff with other stuff he rips from Nexus, XG, Megamix, Retro, etc. Then my project, as well as all of those, are going to be competing with his game with our own graphics created for our personal project. Personally I would plan on releasing all of my assets to the community, but only AFTER the game is finished and released. I would want my game to be the first one out there with my graphics so it's still special to my project. I don't know if I'll be doing that though, because I'd have to run it past Gamerdude first. Back when half the graphics I made were going to my own project, I was planning on releasing them all, but now they're all going to ET:CF and he gets to make the call. That's the most retarded-as-fuck thing I've ever heard. Do you drive? If so, don't tell me you don't get pissed off when someone next to you tries to merge into your lane without signalling or looking and you have to honk your horn several times just so they don't slam into you. It just happend to me a few hours ago. Sure, they don't know you're angry, and sure, I'm only angry because I'm on the receiving end, but that doesn't change the fact that they're careless douchebags and don't deserve to drive if they can't follow the rules. SEGA is a large company that gets paid to do what it does. We're just fans who try stuff ourselves and happen to come up with something good. All of the backgrounds I've made are a result of months, or even years of continued (or on-and-off) work. I want them to be in my project only (at least until its completion) so it remains special and unique to my project. If it appears in everyone's project, ti's no longer special. And with the amount of work and time that goes into my graphics intended for personal use, you can bet it'll be less special if I see everyone using it. I feel like if you had good work of your own, you would take a different stance to this issue. If you didn't put years of work into something intended for your own use, I bet you'd want the exclusive rights to it. But you can't see it from that point of view because you haven't been in my position, or the position of anyone else who has put hours, weeks, or years into original content. We don't reuse sprites and graphics from real games because it's not special, anyone can use it. Like ila said, you have to follow our rules of etiquette if you want to share work with us here. And FYI, I'm an admin here and I would be able to see any deleted posts, and there are none. I believe DW was referring to something that happened in another thread. We're not censoring this discussion.
