You're using realtime raytracing for the reflections, no? Have you tried messing with the attenuation properties of the material? And don't forget to enable supersampling when you're doing the production render.

How long exactly does each image take to process? Just curious.

Also if you've ever used photometrics with mental ray tell me how the fuck can you get shadows to appear because mines aren't working.

EDIT: The Point/Linear/Area ones in Max, I mean. They don't cast light nor shadow unless I change the shadow color, in which case the shadows appear as if they were light emission. It's fucked up.
