SonicProject
Raccoon character to parody Raccoon Mario of SMB3 in a game I am working on. I've gone with Ralphie Raccoon for the name. Only starting on the basics of the engine so don't expect much for a while on that one. But anyway here's the first sprite I did, please forgive the suckage: And compare that to these: Much better, eh? Please don't criticise the animation, I'm not very good at it and I used Super Mario Bros. 3 Mario's as a reference for doing something quick with them. Though I really am trying to get the hang of animation. Surge the Cheetah: http://sonicunited.org/hsfqmtif/forum/showthread.php?t=4137&p=84878 Yoshi, you can see the progress I've made so far. The arrow points to the improved version of the sprite. This sprite was made for the sprite competition at MFGG but the new version didn't make the deadline. No animation as of yet for the new version but it will suck much less than on the previous version, I promise. Sonic, apparently sitting on something. The colors are wrong and that arm looks like it's in pain, but eh, I kinda like it! Excuse the suckage Goomba I did, been a long time since I sprited one. XD Oh and it's not all about sprites! Here's a rose I drew for my mother for Easter. The shape is a little off but ehh. Have I blinded you yet?
Gamemakernooblet
Those are pretty good there SP. Wonder why i'm the only one to respond to this topic eh?
SonicProject
Thanks I wonder that myself.
USC
You know, when I saw you post in Sef's thread, the first thing I thought was "Mario furry?". Anyway, everything's pretty cool; I especially like the Yoshi. If I had to say something though, on the second running sprite, make more of the arm visible on the side away from us; right now it gives more of an impression of a white ball stuck on his chest. Gamemakernooblet
lolz. USC: are you talking to me? I'm a powet and I didn't know it lulz.
USC
...nope. SP posted his raccoon sprite in Sef's 3D request thread; I was referring to that.
SonicProject
Thanks for your comment and criticism, USC, I'll work on that.
SonicProject
By the way, remember Surge the Cheetah? http://sonicunited.org/hsfqmtif/forum/showthread.php?p=30318#post30318 I never really used him for anything and I do like his design. So maybe he's like, Ralphie Raccoon's adopted brother or something. Don't know if I'll actually use him as a playable character or anything though. SonicProject
Please tell me what I am doing wrong so that I may improve. I would prefer negative comments to little to no comments at all.
DimensionWarped
Hard to tell you to improve on something without knowing the overall art direction. They both fit in style with one another anyway.
Streak Thunderstorm
You still need lots of work. Learn some perspective and proportion. You may not think they're necessary but they can be and are applied to every aspect of art.
DimensionWarped
I don't see anything wrong in terms of perspective or proportion myself. They look like Mario sprites. Hell, I'd venture as far as to say that the racoon is Mario and the Cheetah is Luigi. Really, if thats the way he is going with it, I don't see any real way to criticize it. SonicProject
Yes, Ralphie is based off Raccoon Mario and the style is based on that series indeed. It is by no means an edit, however. Streak: What issues do you see with the perspective and proportions? I agree that they are important and wish to know what issues you are talking about so that I may consider fixing them. [qimg]http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/3057/momroseic0.png[/qimg] Have I blinded you yet? Well, the heads are too big. Take this in a realistic sense. Something with a head that big wouldn't have good balance. Now, before I get attacked by nubs saying the mario sprites are like that, I must say that those are off balance too. Anyways. Take that Sonic for example... His pose, what exactly is he doing? It doesn't look like a realistic pose. There's no balance. Plus his limbs are misproportioned. Way too thick. I don't want you to think I'm tearing your stuff apart. It doesn't suck. It can just be a whole lot better. Especially since you've been spriting for such a long time. DimensionWarped
He isn't going for realism. The pose meshes up to the SMB3 pose perfectly... And thats what he is going for. I've just got to disagree with you Streak. There is no sense in downplaying it on the basis of believability. It isn't the aim.
SonicProject
His limbs are too thick? I'm sorry but I draw the line there. Perhaps too long but any thinner and I'd be on the borderline of drawing a stick figure. Thank you for your criticisms, I understand what you're saying. But personally, I do prefer the style I've started to set with Ralphie Raccoon, my game. Meant to be cartoony, not really intended to be realistic, though I understand that it may not be to your standards or preference. And Sonic's pose makes no sense, others that have seen it suggest that he may be sitting on something. I don't really remember what the intentions were when I drew it initially. Streak Thunderstorm
M'kay. Just get better then, if you choose to not take it. As for DW, reality and proportion play in 100% to cartoony styles. Just because something is cartoony doesn't mean it can't be balanced but I guess you have to be a seasoned artist to know that secret information. I have to tell you, I never thought knowing the smallest bit of anatomy or real life drawing would help me anywhere but after I took some courses, ALL my art, both cartoony and semi realistic have changed. DimensionWarped
Streak, he is emulating a style. He isn't trying to revolutionize it.
