That's pretty original, kinda reminds me of this, but in the skies instead of water: I've always wondered why most of fangames are using double-lettered names for its levels? Seriously, I don't remember this trend in genesis-era games except Sonic CD.

Yes, those chunks are getting ready to go through the atmosphere, where they automatically will be transformed into monstrous flaming meteors. More than that, the half-moon itself will cause big troubles: the tides gonna go crazy, so many cities will be just flooded.
