The battleground is a small grass-filled clearing in a forest in a distant corner of the village hidden in the leaves, which is why Itachi has preparations set up here.

"Itachi Uchiha." Deva Path Pain announced into the clearing in his sternest tone.

A small flock of crows took to the wing, cawing in response to Pain's appearance.

The crow collective circled in the air for a brief moment, assessing the arrival of Pain. After a few moments of terse silence, the crows plunged into a head dive, rocketing towards the ground before merging into a tattered humanoid form. Swaying back and forth as he compiled himself amongst a cluster of feathers and caws, Itachi stood perfectly still only seconds later, his gaze meeting Pain's. Apathetic, yet expectant.

No more words needed to be exchanged. Stepping out from around the Deva Path, the other paths got into formation, with the Preta Path leading and the Naraka Path trailing. The group of paths then begun their approach toward Itachi, the Animal Path taking a moment to summon a colossal rhino.

Itachi watched the Paths assemble and move into formation. He noted this formation, and paid particular attention to their movements, and how he might best split them apart. His Sharingan detected the motions of the Animal Path and his hands flickered to life immediately, forming a succession of seals. Itachi leaned forward and a vast fireball burst forth. Using the vast conflagration as cover, he fluidly whirled a number of shuriken around his fingers and, at the appropriate time, launched them in a single maneuver to follow the flame. In light of his two-pronged assault, he turned on his heel and dashed away, headed towards a nearby, significant body of water.

The Preta Path activated it's shield to drain the chakra from the fireball. However, as the fireball disintegrated around the barrier, the Preta Path had just a split second to register the incoming shuriken, which hit home in the Preta Path's left eye, forehead, throat and right shoulder, dropping it.

The Naraka Path flew through the hand seals to summon the king of hell, which appeared in a puff of smoke beside the Preta Path and ingested it whole, spitting out the shuriken from the body. The Naraka Path then dismissed the king of hell to summon it later when the Preta Path would be finished healing.

The Asura Path summoned a missile launcher on it's left arm and fired a small salvo at the retreating Itachi. The Paths then began to give chase, giant crashing rhino in tow.

Itachi maintained a quick pace - fast enough to keep away from any short-range techniques the Paths may possess, but at a pace sufficiently slow to allow them to viably keep in pursuit, and gain slightly on him so that they would remain invested in the chase. Hearing the sound of heavy weaponry being fired, the fleeing Itachi whirled on the spot, launching a cluster of Shuriken to intercept incoming missiles. With unnerving accuracy, the Shuriken met their targets and caused several sharp detonations, scattering charred fragments across the grasslands. Unbeknownst to the pursuing Paths, behind them, two Itachi's emerged from the underbrush. One moved to the area in which the Preta Path fell, and swiped the Shuriken left behind. He then retreated back into the forest and disappeared amongst the vegetation.

With the Paths focused on pursuing the Doppelganger, the other recently emerged Itachi raced forward, hands fluidly moving to form seals. Upon completion, and whilst still in motion, a large fireball, originating from his mouth, emerged and streaked across the grassland towards the exposed rears of the Paths of Pain. He then took a moment to look ahead and ensure his distances were appropriate. If his timing was correct, the Paths would detect and be forced to avoid the fireball at such a time that some would end up near the edge of the forest where another clone hid in wait. The rear Itachi, after releasing the fireball, seemed to disintegrate into a flock of crows, and fled to the winds.

The Deva Path heard the burning hiss of the incoming fireball. It dived to the right as the fireball sailed just past it's ear. The other paths followed suit, diving in various directions to evade the attack. After the fireball sailed overhead, the paths stood up and moved to assemble back-to-back to keep a lookout in all directions.

As the Paths scattered to avoid the attack, a volley of flaming Shuriken emerged from various gaps in the foliage to their right, aimed to suppress the Paths who had landed furthest away and prevent their assistance. With the Deva Path so near the forest, and now somewhat isolated, the concealed clone emerged in a flash, Kunai in hand, aiming a killing blow.

The previously scattered Crow Clone formed once more near the Asura path, likewise aiming to dispatch the troublesome element as it recovered.

The Asura and Deva Paths took a chakra rod from their sleeve and wielded it to beat aside the incoming attacks.

Flashing through the hand signs, the Naraka Path summoned the king of hell in the way of the shuriken, which lodged into it's face. The king of hell responded by spitting out the Preta Path, which, although not quite fully healed, was in fighting shape.

The Animal Path summoned a curious crustacean which spat it's foam spray at the incoming flaming shuriken, handily extinguishing it and cancelling it's momentum. The Animal Path then grabbed the shuriken as it landed on the ground.

The Human Path had no defence, and was promptly gunned down. The king of hell swallowed it, spat out the shuriken and was dismissed to be summoned later.

Behind the Paths, Nagato was beginning to wonder if a pattern was forming here.
