I do remember getting stuck on that part back when I first played the game. Thankfully Power Sonic had a whole page on the subject. It's how they first got popular, if I remember well.

 

Casino Paradise in Advance 1 also has barrels, but they're not coded to move like the ones in Sonic 3, thus teaching people wrong about them. Also I played a little right now to get a screenshot but I can't remember where to find the barrels in that zone. I need a map.

I remember not really having an issue with the barrel. I think I died once or twice the first time I encountered it, but I do remember on one occasion jumping up and down on the barrel for a few minutes until I was able to sneak under. As a kid I bet during those jumps I was also inputting the up and down commands too which helped. But after that I was able to figure out the proper way to do it and it didn't take me long. The barrels were definitely a dumb mechanic in the level back then because it went against how pretty much everything in the game worked but I didn't find it nearly as stressful as a lot of other people did haha.

I had heard all about the barrel's tricks thanks to the internet before I ever got to play Sonic 3, so sadly I didn't get to experience the torture.

I actually glitched trough the barrel i forget how and never touched sonic 3 again untill i learnt how to do it proper lol.
