  1. I'd like to pose a question to you... would you mind if the skin system disappeared? I'm rewriting the main site scripts, and I'm divided over whether or not it's worth trying to preserve that feature. It's a bit of a pain to keep as I'd like to do away with the rather bulky template backend and go towards a more lean (bandwidth and computational) AJAX system. I'd like to hear your opinions on the matter. =Smidge=
  2. Generally mounting isn't a problem, even Compaqs aren't *that* bad anymore. The motherboard should come with a rear bezel plate. Depending on the case, the existing bezel is removable. =Smidge=
  3. I totally missed that. Hell, for $500 you can get a whole new computer that beats your current setup, especially if you recycle some parts (case, power supply, hard drives, optical drives) though that might not be entirely possible since it's a Compaq. As for size/capacity... the most you can afford, of course! CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)- Retail $75.99 (Free 3-day shipping) That maxes out your RAM... EVGA GeForce 8600GTS 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported $209.99 ($10 mail-in rebate, $5.86 S&H) Also supports DX10. You can do anything you want with the extra $200... == OR == Let's see what we can do for $500, just for fun... reuse your case, PSU and hard drive... EVGA 256-P2-N615-TX GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported $89.99 (Before $15 mail-in rebate) G.SKILL 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Memory $109.99 (Uses 1 of 2 slots, allowing 2GB unused capacity for future...) GIGABYTE GA-P31-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P31 ATX Intel Motherboard $82.99 (All solid capacitors... that's very a good feature.) Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Conroe 2.33GHz LGA 775 Proc $178.99 (Best bang for the buck right now) Total: $461.96 (Not including S&H) NOTE: You can't re-use your current power supply if the main connector doesn't have 24 pins. If that's the case, add: Rosewill RD400-2-SB 400W,ATX12V v2.2 Power Supply $31.99 Grand total: $493.95 (Not including S&H) =Smidge=
  4. If you're not an overclocker or performance junkie, then just buy the cheapest RAM you can find that's compatible. There's really very little difference in brands unless you're buying the really expensive stuff. If you do a lot of gaming, though, a new video card might be a good idea. What kind of budget have you decided on? =Smidge=
  5. ...that's how I'd handle the situation. =Smidge=
  6. That rule has been lifted. However, I don't think you want to actually *submit* it since that's not a good way to get feedback. I'd suggest general fangame discussion instead. =Smidge=
  7. Not sure why there's a separate PHP file for each date... Anyway, a single PHP file could be used to load the last X files starting at a certain date (default to the current date). It will get a tad unwieldy when you have LOTS of files, but it's doable. The "smart" way to do it, if you don't want to use SQL, is to make your own type of automated filing system (requires ability for scripts to write to files). This would keep a separate data file with a list of files in chronological order, so you can load the list of files without enumerating the entire directory and sorting them. The script would have an interface for editing the news files as well, meaning the script would name, save and index each news item for consistency. Is that a solution you'd be interested in? =Smidge=
  8. it is possible, yes. It's a lot easier if you give the text files sensible names, but file creation date is also doable. Can you give an example list of file names? =Smidge=
  9. Hey yeah? The RPG project I've been sitting on could really use some creative writing... =Smidge=
  10. You're full of shit, Kain. The first time I have you logged as joining, there was a pretty good sized discussion going on that you failed to participate in. (20:03 to 22:06 - the longest break of silence was 20min) The second time there was also a fair amount of chitchat. (15:29 to 17:49 - 16 minutes longest silence break) The THIRD time you joined (18:35 - 20:04) you got pulled into #camp never to be seen again. Just before that, there was decent activity. The only other time you joined was after midnight and into the wee hours of the morning (00:05 - 4:58). No shit activity would be kinda sparse, since anyone who has a life is probably out living it (or, in my case, sleeping) All times in 24-hour Eastern Standard Time. And yes I log everything. Edit: Of course, the BEST is when someone joins, nothing happens for THREE WHOLE MINUTES (including them saying anything) then declaring the channel dead just before leaving. GG guys! Edit edit: Fucking IRC n00bs... =Smidge=
  11. Speaking of which, I strongly oppose the use of my text and signature "=Smidge=" tag in your advert banner. It gives the impression that I approve of or even endorse your channel, which I do not. Kindly have it removed. =Smidge=
  12. Koray: You can have anything you want with an engine swap. Fuck, a properly modified Chevy small-block will crank out 1500 HP if you want it to. Too bad that would probably turn a Civic chassis into a pretzel, assuming you could get it to fit. If you're willing to go for something "top fuel" then you can get a 4-cylinder putting out 4000 HP. It's still a Civic no matter what you put in it. My point is, it's tantamount to sucking yourselves off. I laugh every time I see a pile of flowers at the base of a tree, and there's usually at least two every year just around the corner since I live just off a long straight stretch of road. I also laugh at the jerkoff in the riced-out street rod doing 50 on the highway with the donut tire because he hit a pothole doing 90 in a parking lot, or screwed up a drift and discovered those concrete curbs are stronger than his $1000-a-pair mag wheels. Also, you drive my insurance premiums up. Assholes. MaxSonic: I liked the one from Begins, myself. It just looked like all business. =Smidge= <-- Volkswagen Jetta. Nice car, actually...
  13. No matter how many bold-on spoilers, fiberglass scoops or pinstripes you add... ...you're still driving a Honda Civic. =Smidge=
  14. Anime fanatics, no matter how bad they get, have never rioted in the streets. =Smidge=
  15. Beat ya by 13 days, Epon! =Smidge=
  16. Might have something to do with the robots.txt file I put there when I went to an all PHP system. Not only does Google's trawler botch up the site, but all of the pages are too dynamic to be indexed anyway. What exactly would you search for? The site has a built in filter system to help find what you need, an author index if you want something from a particular person, and there's always CTRL+F after that. Go ahead and make one. How exactly does one "support" this? More importantly, how does one apply a creative Commons license to a Sonic sprite or fangame when they do not own the rights in the first place? (Hint: There is nothing on the site that is original enough to completely avoid SEGA's copyright, and probably never will be.) I've been pushing for these for years. Good luck. I should ban you for mentioning "Web 2.0" - such "buzzwordiness" is like a cancer unto the internet. I'm all for modernization where it has a clear benefit. What benefit, other than being "trendy" and "neat", do any of these features really provide? Embedding youtube into the main site? No thanks. I already don't want that in the forums. Beats me. Haven't heard a word out of that group since I created their own forum. That would require someone actually submitting something first, wouldn't it? =Smidge=
  17. ...and as I explained the last few times this was discussed: Emuzone does not permit scripts to create or modify files. Hence, "it can't be done on Emuzone." =Smidge=
  18. This, of course, can be said of anything. Sports, for example... Solution? Avoid the idiot fanbase. This is fairly easy to do when it comes to Anime, as simply avoiding conventions will eliminate 99% of encounters. =Smidge= /Avoids cons like the plauge...
  19. ...and what good would an SQL account do? I hope you are not suggesting that binary files be stored in an SQL database, especially large (>~5MB) files. Gamerdude: A lot, supposedly. If you believe the ads for the service, 1.4TB/Mo or more. Wouldn't bank on those numbers, though... =Smidge=
  20. I have about 280GB of anime on file, and it's easy to load them up into VirtualDubMod and make clips :E Rotoscoping. If you lurk the forums, some people have made PDF versions... although editing-wise they are probably out of date. The Wiki is constantly being updated. QFT. It's worth noting that the series originally aired in a NON-chronological order, so things just sort of happen and then didn't happen. Stick with it. "Episode 00" is actually a home movie Haruhi wrote and directed. If you want the full effect, read Volume 2 of the novels before watching it - Volume 2 is pretty much "The making of" that movie, so you get to see how they made it, then watch it for yourself. =Smidge=
  21. There are 4 engines on the site. If 98% of them are corrupt, that means only 0.08 of them work... I just downloaded the 360 Degree movement engine and tried it out. I needed to install the extensions (which were included in the .zip) but it worked fine. This means at least a 25% success rate, and possibly that you're an idiot. =Smidge=
  22. http://www.boxtorrents.com/details.php?id=129315 I doubt you'll find any DDLs because the series has been licensed for months. I'm impressed BoxTorrents still has it listed, actually... =Smidge=
  23. We stopped hosting demos because they take up nearly as much space as full games, are typically extremely buggy, un-fun and never ever get finished. If you want to showcase your demo or engine test, do it on the forums. If you want to get your stuff on the main site, consider finishing it first. =Smidge=
  24. Haruhi is awesome because it is. It takes nearly every trope ever and twists it completely around, and give you a narrator/semi-protagonist who, unlike most protagonists, really wants nothing to do with what's going on. The story deliberately makes fun of itself and past shows like it by including stereotypes *explicitly* for the sake of including said stereotypes, and manages to do it without being a slapstick comedy or too corny about it. Here's a clip that demonstrates it perfectly (I had to slaughter the quality to keep size down...) Unlike most series, there really is no single scene that can be used to generalize the entire series (compare to, say, ANY fight-oriented series where each episode follows the same basic pattern ad-nausium). Please don't consider the above clip to be typical of the whole thing... it's not. (Above: Haruhi "acquires" a new computer system from the Computer Research Society with her shrewd negotiation skills.) It's also pretty, being highly detailed and well animated with comparatively minimal CGI. Characters have well rounded, dynamic personalities (even minor ones) and the overall setting is internally consistent. It lacks unnecessary drama which lets itself be fun rather than pretentious, which it could easily have been given the underlying plot. (Above: The suspiciously apropos music scene. Worth watching as it's an unusually awesome song.) You should read the novels the anime is based on (as in actual novels with words, not manga) if you get a chance. They go a lot farther into the story than the anime does (though I hope the second season covers certain parts that explain some of the off-handed comments from the first season, time travel is a funny thing...) (Above: Nagato is a pretty good sport about these kinds of things...) =Smidge=
