It really doesn't seem like it's just a round belly. I have to agree with Lark here. I agree with all of the aforesaid stuff man, it kinda looks like he's got a round belly, but it's probably all due to the position of the hand. Anyways, I think that most Sonic sprites in the standing position have the hands down and at the side, though I ain't seen them all, so I can't say so for sure.
