  1. I like your guitar tone a lot better in the first one much better than the next two; too much treble in those ones. I really like the chord progression in "funky"; there's a lot of potential there. What are you putting your guitar through atm? Mic'd amp, modeller or VST?
  2. no problem, glad to help. a few tips that were helpful for me: 1. 90% of the time you shouldn't need to EQ instruments, especially sampled ones. The only kind of EQing you really need to do is high pass filtering certain instruments (such as an electric or acoustic guitar) to remove unwanted frequencies. I very rarely EQ my stuff unless I'm HP filtering guitars or a kick drum with shitloads of subsonic frequencies (a spectrum analyzer such as Voxengo's SPAN can reveal these). Balance the dry mix first by zeroing all your faders and bringing up the level of each instrument one at a time in order of importance. This way you'll know which channels are interfering with which and THEN can begin thinking about EQ options. A little rule I follow when EQing is to avoid boosting frequencies as they interfere with the phase response of an instrument and can also distort certain frequency bands which leaves a pretty crap sound. It's better to use a frequency cut and turn up the fader as the phase response will be changed around the frequencies you don't really want. Also: if you're using more than 6dB of frequency gain, EQ ain't gonna help. 2. Add reverb and other effects only once you have all the instruments balanced in the mix. Solo the instrument and see how the reverb sounds with it; then reduce the send level to 0 and unsolo the instrument. Slowly bring the reverb up until it sounds right and dial it back about 1dB. 3. When mixing your work you should always use lossless commercial reference tracks. Export a wav of your work and compare it to a reference track. Import both tracks into a new session and do A/B comparisons so you can instantly switch between each track. Bring down the level of the mastered reference track so it matches the level of yours and then compare them.
  3. something I've noticed with your mixes is that there is very little bass, everything seems to be going on above the mids as well as the fact that everything feels completely drenched in reverb. Tidal Tempest is a great example of this. I can barely hear the bass and the strings just feel WAY too loud whilst also feeling a million miles away due to all the reverb. Reverb is there to add a sense of space, but the amount of reverb in these mixes make them sound empty. What you really want to be doing is using a short or medium reverb with about 40-50ms of predelay and a slow-ish attack. That will give your mix a sense of space without washing it out.
  4. true. to be honest, another site will pop up in its place. Remember when mininova shut down? everyone boarded their doors and windows shut, ready for the apocalypse and another site just sprouted up. not really bothered, i don't pirate stuff.
  5. does megaupload include megavideo and megaporn too?
  6. this is some straight up bullshit.
  7. I'm totally with you on demolishing the plot. I was playing Sonic Colors on the DS earlier and I was just thinking "why the fuck are these animals talking to each other? I seriously don't care. Let me get to the next level." adding a loading screen for the sake of it isn't a good idea. Sonic BTS didn't have loading screens and no one said "Ere! Lake, mate! we pure need some loading screens in here like." all it is at the end of the day is a novelty for you, no one else. if you want a plotline then here's a little task for you: 1. get a piece of paper and write down all the levels (they're the most important thing after the engine itself). 2. Think about how they all connect. Do they all take place on an island a la Sonic 1 and 2? Or do we shift from island to space or whatnot? 3. Draw a map of how Sonic and chums will get from point a to b to c etc. and think about what could happen inbetween. here's an example that I had for a game: Sonic is dropped off on the beach by Tails, goes through a jungle, up a mountain, is knocked off the mountain into a sunken ruin, goes through a mine and into a warphole. He comes out the other side on an inverted island (full of raw emerald!), proceeds through a swamp and into eggman's base. It's not plotless, but it's straightforward. You can easily make something like this or better
  8. thanks a bunch I just set up a vibedeck account at http://vibedeck.com/andytunstall nice and clean layout which I like.
  9. get a jorb. or go to university/college whatever, it's usually installed on their systems plus you can usually get a sweet student offer from certain places. photoshop elements is apparently alright though...
  10. I never finished unleashed, the last boss (as supersonic) was just ridiculous. I can't even remember how I kept dying but it was no fault of my own. ended up giving the game away to a relative because I couldn't be arsed with it... still miss Rooftop Run a bit... oh and an average rating for sound? fuck me the soundtrack is phenomenal. knocks Jun Senoue's stuff right out the park.
  11. this is such an Alex Jones thread.
  12. the quicker we all die the better.
  13. I prefer Classic Game Room's reviews. Yahtzee does make me laugh, though I'm starting to see a pattern in his work. I think everyone gets queered off ZP once Yahtzee smashes a game that they like.
  14. amazing. love the use of halftone patterns
  15. @Chronic: thanks a bunch, had fun making it @Asuma: shouldn't be too hard, it uses 8-bit samples and generally uses a pulse wave for the bass guitar. I'm available atm so PM the details
  16. oh man I do love your artwork, you've developed a really cool style here. the first track from the sea facility set really reminds me of something you'd hear in Tekken Tag Tournament for some reason... good thing your tracks are lush though, you really communicate your ideas well through the sounds. do you have any studio monitors at the moment? if not I'd advise buying some entry-level monitors such as http://www.dv247.com/studio-equipment/alesis-m1-active-520-active-studio-monitors-pair--30394 it'll help you make more informed decisions with the balance of your instruments (bass on the battle track is quite a bit too loud) i'd also SUPER advise buying Mike Senior's book "Mixing Secrets" as it has pretty much blown my mind on how to mix music properly: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0240815807/ref=asc_df_02408158076043259?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn&creative=22206&creativeASIN=0240815807 p.s. I might be writing a weird album sometime called "Songs for My Cat" under the nom de guerre "tunnotron.8", it'd be cool to have some of your artwork for it... if I ever do the album
  17. it's times like this we should reference other sources, for example, the trees in hill top zone: http://info.sonicretro.org/images/8/83/Hilltop.png the trees have shading beneath their "layers" and the shading gives the trees their cylindrical quality. there's not an amazing amount of detail either, it's all just nicely suggested which helps them blend into the background.
  18. the thing with those kinds of trees is that the branches actually grow upwards http://i.istockimg.com/file_thumbview_approve/8176806/2/stock-photo-8176806-pine-tree.jpg remember that the tree isn't flat, it's 3-dimensional so some shading to suggest that the "middle" branches are closer to us than the outer ones. like the shading on this http://www.softchalk.com/lessonchallenge09/lesson/geometry/clipart_cylinder.jpg except more tree-ish.
  19. Happy New Year bitchezzz. I'd like to say I got totally hammered and had a wild night but I was working 9-5, came home and wanted to go to bed at about 10pm. Stayed up and watched the Hootenanny with my girlfriend - my word, Cyndi Lauper is an absolute milf!
  20. That'd be pretty sweet, I've never done a collab before so I'd definitely be up for it. My DAW of choice is Reaper, it's cheap and constantly updated, plus Mike Senior of Sound on Sound absolutely raves about it @LH I can get to work on it, it'd be nice to see some artwork to base it on though. Feel free to PM me
  21. I get told I have a young face quite a lot, but I'm 22. I'll be laughing when I'm 50 looking like a 40 year old though! @Falk I should really upgrade my POD, I can never really get a great sound out of it. I got mine off a guy who used to be in a Church band for next to nothing. Also, nice to see someone who has a desk as messy as mine
  22. I'm Andy, and I'm a composer from the UK. I'm PRS For Music (http://www.prsformusic.com/) registered and am available for work RIGHT NOW. Check out http://vibedeck.com/andytunstall for a collection of my music. I now have an awful lot of Sonic music in my portfolio, so I can no longer make these tracks for free if there is no guarantee that the game will be released. However, non-Sonic or slower Sonic tracks I can do for free at the moment. I play guitar, bass and keyboard. As well as being a more-than-adequate, self-taught producer with studio experience I cover different genres, from chiptunes (http://chipmusic.org/tunners/music/frostbite-peak , http://chipmusic.org/tunners/music/east-cloud-stellar) to rock music (http://soundcloud.com/tunners/dreamstation-ex-amount-iii) to fully rendered CD-quality soundtracks (http://soundcloud.com/tunners/midnight-lagoon-area-one , http://soundcloud.com/tunners/ruin-lake , http://soundcloud.com/tunners/white-second-marissa-love) And remember, you can check out my FULL portfolio by going to http://vibedeck.com/andytunstall I'd love to hear from you, so please feel free to contact me about anything. Thank you very much for your time!
  23. my boss bought me a giant chocolate santa claus. just discovered it the other day. oh and @Chronic - buy the cheaper telecaster, they cost almost nothing to build, you're simply paying for the name with the other one. save the money and get it professionally set up to your tastes
