  1. The first zone is somewhat of a remake of the Game Gear version of GHZ. It's the obligatory tropical island level. Aside from that the zones are much more unique. The zones from the old demo are still in. Basically, I really had to get a new engine in order to counter the problems with the FPS that the old version had. In turn, I also redid the level design instead of remaking the old dated levels when I could improve them much more.

    Just to prove it's not a remake, here are some screens of the other zones in the SAGE demo.

  2. Does anyone know where to find some ripped Ristar tilesets? The game has a similar art style to Sonic (not so much the isometric foregrounds, but the backgrounds) and I can think of several areas I'd like to pick apart and edit. I've seen them used in various fangames and images before, so I'm guessing they're out there somewhere. Help a brother out?

    Well, it's been proven that Sonic 2 was built off of the Sonic 1 engine (as one of the alphas has Green Hill Zone included), but time travel was also admitted to have been in the early stages. Like you said, wood zone was a scrapped past area for Metropolis. They even used the same music.

    Hidden Palace wasn't the past of Oil Ocean though. Yuji Naka said himself that the player would be warped to Hidden Palace after collecting the emeralds, for Sonic to get his super powers there. As everyone knows, though, it never came to be that way.
