  1. I've discovered PSP emulation recently and started playing Mega Man: Powered Up for the first time a month or two ago. It has good parts, but sometimes it's hard to tell whether the game is challenging or just poorly-designed.

     

    I play through the original Mega Man games with no problem, but then again it's Mega Man, so a few sucker punches are to be expected. Something just feels off about it though, even in Original Style mode. Maverick Hunter X on the other hand is superb.

  2. Most of the negativity seems to be due to the abundance of combat and people not realizing that this isn't actually a platformer or part of the main series. I think if people viewed this game as the next Sonic Battle or Sonic the Fighters and compared it to other action-adventure games like Batman or Spider-Man (or even LEGO or Skylanders) instead of comparing it to something like Generations or Lost World, it would help them to understand some of the concepts a bit better.

     

    Sonic Boom as a branch is probably something that should have happened a long time ago, maybe around the time of Sonic 4 and Sonic Colors. See, Sonic Team has a bit of a problem. We all want different things, but one Sonic game can never cover all of those things, because we are so different. It's a good problem in that it makes for a lot of interesting ideas and conversations, but a bad problem when there is only one team making one type of game for everybody.

     

    For the past few years, Sonic Team has been moving away from large scale games such as the Sonic Adventures and Sonic Unleashed and has gone for a much simpler/"safer" approach. This is fine if you enjoy short and simple games, not so much if you want a fuller and more fleshed-out experience. Sonic Boom looks like the first step back to the Adventure/Unleashed format, which emphasized story elements and different areas being woven together by one central theme, rather than going from a desert level to a candy level to a beach level with no real explanation.

     

    SEGA knew this would not sit well with everyone. They knew some people would not want another story-driven Sonic game with darker environments and emphasis on combat, so they (finally) decided to split it off into its own branch. What this means is we can finally get the best of both worlds, instead of just settling for one.

     

    I am personally looking forward to this. The speed sections aren't daytime Unleashed, but they still look fun. The adventure/combat levels look to have a good amount of depth to them and seem to offer a lot of multiple routes for each character. The combat actually looks very engaging to me, but hopefully they'll throw in a few more moves so that it's not just the same two or three combos every time. And the jokes are actually funny, for once. It looks like the game I've been waiting for since Unleashed. I only wish it wasn't Nintendo-exclusive so that more people could enjoy it.

  3. It's okay. Most people either overrate it or underrate it. I feel the same way about Adventure 2.

     

    I tend to prefer Heroes and Shadow because while they share a lot of the same elements, they're not broken up into separate "styles" of gameplay. They're also faster and more complex than the vanilla Sonic/Shadow gameplay in SA1/2. I don't really think Sonic Team's weird genre roulette format worked well until Unleashed.

    forgetting is that SEGA is in a (temporarily) partnership with Nintendo which means they had to use some of

    Nintendo's graphics, color designs and level layouts. There's people that remembers or not. And people are

    STILL saying it's a Galaxy copy and yet, they keep forgetting that SEGA's in a partnership. *Sigh*

    Nintendo is not involved with the actual development of the game, they're just publishing it.

    This isn't the first time a Sonic game has been published by Nintendo. The Olympics titles and I think Colors were published by Nintendo in Japan.

  5. Okay, that was slightly less offensive than whatever that first trailer was supposed to be. The platforming looks a lot less clunky than it did in Colors thanks to the new parkour/running system, but I can't shake the feeling that there's still a little too much of it, to the point where there's barely any running space, especially in the Wii U version.

    It also looks a lot more like Mario now - that tiny planet at the end of Windy Hill and those rotating squares in Desert Ruins 1 looked like something straight out of Galaxy and NSMB Wii. It's not necessarily a bad thing, if they can make it work with Sonic. Even the fastest level shown (Desert Ruins 2) looks way slower than Unleashed or Generations.

    So, looking better, but I'm still not sold yet... definitely not something I would get a new system for. Hopefully they'll show some faster/more difficult gameplay videos soon.

  6. @MTwinny: Problem is, main series Sonic titles generally release in two year intervals, meaning that, even if all three exclusive titles release this year, it is likely that Microsoft and Sony consoles will still be required to wait at least two years before seeing a Sonic release.

    Unless this is just a spin-off title done by a smaller team, similar to the Storybook games and Colors. That's the impression I'm getting so far, anyway.

    This is really the exact opposite of what I've come to expect from the same series that brought us ambitious games such as Unleashed. I really hope this isn't SEGA's idea of the evolution of Sonic. The Wii U is capable of far more than this.

  7. It's an inconvenience to you that they want to seek some sort of profit for their hard work? You might not be willing to pay for it, but there are plenty of people who would.

    It has nothing to do with inconvenience. Why would I pay for a product that looks worse than something I can get for cheaper?

     

    And before you start going on about hard work, I've seen games made by one or two people that look better, using their own engine and source code. They are obviously not working that hard if they couldn't even finish it before begging for funds on Kickstarter.

     

    The fact that people are so defensive about what is essentially an MMF fangame makes it even harder for me to take this seriously.

I think part of the problem with recent titles is that, while they use the Unleashed gameplay (or, a less challenging/more streamlined 'kid-friendly' interpretation of it), a lot of the main people who worked on Unleashed have disappeared. Nishiyama's last game was Black Knight, Hirabayashi hasn't been seen since Colors DS, Nagahara has had his hands full with Sonic 4, and I don't think Hashimoto will ever come back now that he's at Square. A lot of the newer guys such as Kishimoto and Miyamoto (not that Miyamoto) have no experience with directing Sonic games.

     

    The next game will clearly be a spin-off of Sonic Generations starring Classic Sonic... because we haven't quite drowned in nostalgia yet.

     

    I hope that doesn't happen... They have been playing on nostalgia way too much lately. At the expense of ticking off the 5% of the fanabase who hate everything past SA1, I wish they would make a deliberate attempt not to get the "old Sonic feel" for once. What is the point of buying new games if they are exactly like the old ones?

    If people weren't so defensive about this game, I wouldn't be so reluctant to try it. Even though I said the game looks good and I might try it someday, you still chose to be offended because I didn't go out and get it right away. It's the same kind of bandwagoning that pushed me away in the first place. Is it really a crime to be more interested in other driving games, or simply like it without liking it enough to get it asap? It looks good, for a kart racer. Beyond that though, it still just looks like another kart racer to me.

     

    It did have a very specific target audience; SEGA fans, who happen to enjoy kart racers.

    ...playing by some sort of rulebook? Every game follows a pre-defined selection of mechanics, all games in existence conform to a set of rules. Your complaint of artificiality seems entirely arbitrary.

     

    That's not what I mean.

     

    They seem "artificial" in the same sense that Batman & Robin feels artificial compared to Batman 1989 and Batman Returns. Like they are trying, but not really trying. Like they aren't really having as much fun coming up with ideas and making them as they used to. I guess the Sims 3 example kind of works here too.

    Well, there are a couple of things. I feel like SEGA was trying too hard to sell this game, as in the same way EA is trying too hard to sell The Sims these days.

    Well, maybe not that hard, but you get the idea. I felt like they were trying to market it to a very specific crowd, one that does not include me. I also felt like the game had a lot of hype around it, and that kind of thing makes me a little nervous these days, after being disappointed by several big-budget titles that couldn't live up to it. I feel like people are calling it the best racing game ever, even though kart racers generally aren't as big as sandbox or other driving games. When I started comparing it to other driving games that were coming out at the same time like NFS Most Wanted or Forza Horizon, it did seem like people were just overhyping and overselling it. That made me a little annoyed.

     

    Then I realized I already have two very similar games, Blur and Banjo N&B, which both seem bigger and more original/"natural", I guess? I feel like the recent Sonic and Mario games have had this strange artificial feeling to them, almost like they are playing by some kind of rulebook. The game still looks good, but it doesn't seem to do anything I haven't seen before. I also don't really play my consoles very much anymore, so there's that.

  11. The only thing I really have time for these days is my my JXD handheld, so I just emulate old games with the occasional Android game. The last thing I played was Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure, but I've been playing some of the Mega Man games lately as well.

    just a broken fighting game where you use it to make your own fighting games. But people decided to make characters from other fighting games in this... now its a pretty unbalanced game. I like it.

    Ahahaha, I used to play MUGEN all the time in high school, back when folks like JudgeSpear and Ampchu used to make videos of it. I have a ton of (really bad) videos of myself playing as Chun-Li and a few other characters it on my YouTube channel. I'm surprised it's still active.

  12. I am Chex. I came here primarily because I wanted a place to talk about Sonic without the usual crowd always storming in and trying to control the conversation (if you've ever been to /v/ or most active Sonic boards, you'll know what I'm talking about). I figured a smaller and less active board would be necessary for filtering out all of the nonsense that other boards seem to have trouble with, even if it isn't as fast (pun not intended, hurr).

     

    In the past I've been to Sonic Retro, but for a very large number of reasons that I won't even get into, I'm afraid to even browse the wiki anymore. I tried the SEGA forums for a while, but they seem maybe just a little young for me, and they've been kind of dead lately. It's difficult for me to get a good thread going about the games or the systems that interest me there, since they only really seem to talk about what's new and popular.
