  1. PM'ed you. In the meantime, I'm working on an actual demo release(instead of just sending it to PC0) that everyone can try out. And LH, thanks for all that advice and those links, I'm checking them all out now =D
  2. no need to lock it, man. There was a misunderstanding at the beginning, people thought I was trolling, that I didn't really have a game, etc. But everything should be fine now, with my multiple vids posted and demo sent to PC0. I apologize for everything being so wordy...I do tend to get long-winded, but that shouldn't be a reason to close the thread bro.
  3. Chao Garden footage. Shows me using a red chao egg, and small bit of things you can do with them.
  4. Finally something to work with! Thanks much LH! Glad to see you could look through the awful frame skipping. I'll touch on the things you mentioned... (Cons) 1. The different sprites. Something I knew from the start would not be looked at as good. But the Knuckles I wanted needed to have all of those animations. If I could find a S3 Knux with edited punching, climbing, and etc animations, I'd easily be able to replace him. If not, then that's something I'll be putting off until later when I can arse one of my spriter friends to do it for me. 2. You're right in this sense. However, the blur effect you see when running was intentionally placed in there. Once Sonic's speed reaches a certain point, and his running animation is playing, the blur effect happens. I may switch this up at some time, maybe make it be translucent images of sonic's running frames or something like that. But either way, that's what you were seeing when the blur effect happens as he is running. 3. This is my toughest hurdle, to date. My engine simply is not letting me put in slopes or 'real' loops, without major glitches. I'm still constantly working at this with every chance I get. But for now, what I've done is something a bit unique, at least as far as I knew(meaning I didn't copy it from something else I've seen) For my loops(which will be retextured and etc eventually), when Sonic collides with an invisible object at the start of the loop, and his speed is greater than X, it will start the loop movement, and set sonic's loop movement speed to X as well. Then, if you are not holding down 'Right'(or 'Left' in some cases), the loop movement will cancel out, bring gravity back and Sonic will fall. This effect is also used in other levels for running up/down walls. 4. You're absolutely right in this area too. I never meant for the backgrounds you're seeing to be the final show. Just recently I was playing S3&K and was getting some awesome ideas for really layering out the backgrounds and making them POP that much more. I've downloaded and checked out Sonic Worlds before, but never really took a look at the paralaxxing and what not so I'll take that advice and look into that. Pros 1. Thanks. Hardest part maybe was getting the red & black slamming blocks to work, because they move up and down and had to get the moving platforms to work correctly, which was tricky enough itself. Then had to make it so that if you are caught underneath it when they are moving down, you get hurt. 2. That was the idea that sparked this game, tbh. 3. Spent most of my time with Knux's physics, more than the others. He's still not perfect, but I'm still tweaking him here and there. 4. Thank you again, and yes, the Chao Garden is there too, just not in the vid. I'll have some gameplay videos up of the kart racing later tonight, and hopefully some Chao vids and maybe a look at some other levels. EDIT: The final part you said too, about the graphics...I know, and as I progress through making the game I'll continually be upgrading the 'ugly' parts of the game and making them look better. Thing is, I'm not the spriter, so I'm just working on everything that I do. I put in the requests to my brother, who is graciously taking his time out to help me when he can, and he gets me the new sprites when he can. For example, you should have seen my first whale >_< It was a horribly resized avatar and just did not look well at all. As my brother played through Beach Blast for the first time he was like "I've got to make you a new whale" lol, so he did. But, yes, I'll be ugprading everything that needs it, eventually.
  5. Sorry for the double post, but I didn't wanna double the edit of the last post, and plus this is something people kept asking for... In-Game Video Footage Warning, it skips a lot of frames and is very clippy. But you can get a very good idea of the gameplay and at least see that I'm NOT lying about having made this game. Coming up soon will be Kart racing vids and Chao Garden vids, and more gameplay vids, hopefully all at a better framerate. Just gotta tweek the settings of my video capture program to work it's best.
  6. I'm using MMF 2. And for anyone interested, the demo has been sent to PC0 =D And it's the FULL demo, with every level playable, full kart racing game, full chao system, and everything else. The only thing not playable on it is the Chao Sports, which I didn't set up a direct link to from the Chao Garden yet. In any case, that should be enough to prove it's not something I just 'threw together in a couple hours'. See, that's valid. That's a perfectly acceptable position to me, and I dont take offense to it at ALL. Because I'm not so narrow-minded as to think that everyone will look at this and think it's worth their time in the slightest. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, some people just won't be able to get past the clashing styles, the rigged edges, and whatever else may put you off. But, on the same level, you can't be so narrow-minded as to think that everyone feels the way you do. If that's the case, then it's you with the complex, and you're just projecting that onto me which is the norm for most people like that. Not to get all psychological or anything, I'm just sayin. EDIT: In the meantime, however, I'm ready to show that I'm not unwilling to make change. So to start, if anyone would be so kind as to point me in the direction to some nice HUD systems, or at least give a description of what would look nice, I'll hop right on top of that =D
  7. @LH I totally agree that 90% of the discussion in this thread has been extremely unnecessary. But it's not been me that was pushing to talk about any of that. I don't much like having to go over every little thing and every minute detail about why I don't have a vid up, or having to defend myself from personal attacks. I'm putting up with most of this because, despite me sticking by the fact that I do make games for myself, obviously I do want other people to be able to play them. And I realize that if I can stick with this community, it could very well be a nice place to release my game to when the time comes. It only seems proper to me. @PC0 lol, I do get it now, I can totally see your reasoning. I'm not very frequent on any message boards, so I've heard of and seen people 'trolling' but never really seen it explained like that. But, yes, that does make a lot of sense, looking at it from your side now. However, let's do the same thing for you guys...look at it through my eyes... Let's say, for arguments sake(since I know no one believes me right now>.>) that everything I said is true. Okay, so you've been working on a game for a few months. You've got all these ideas that are cool to you, and you implement them into the game, spending countless hours testing and programming and re-testing and re-programming. You come to a wall, and decide to ask for some suggestions to spark some more creativity, hoping that the 'two heads are better than one' theory proves correct, and that you can get some good ideas from some like-minded folks at a forum that is based around the type of game you're making. You go to said forum, sign up, post a few screenshots of your game and a detailed description, asking for ideas on what would be good to add. Instead, you're told that you should start over, using their engine. Upon explanation of why you'd prefer to use your own engine, you're accused of attention seeking and 'not accepting criticism well'. Then when you explain why you don't have a video or a demo, you get accused of trolling, and told that you 'have no fangame. at all.', like you were just making this all up? I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong here, and I realize how it came off as trolling. But hopefully you can see this from my point of view as well. EDIT: While I'm working on getting this demo sorted out, I'll link to some video footage of a different game I made last year. This should at least quiet the accusations somewhat, showing that I do indeed make games and am not just talking out of my ass. From a Power Ranger game I was working on. Keep in mind this is purely testing the engine, not an actual 'level' from the game.
  8. that's what I meant by 'doing what i can'...ill get you the demo, PC0, asap.
  9. Yeah, I hear ya PC0. And I honestly DO see where you're coming from. I can understand the pics looking 'trollish'...hell, I'm not exactly proud of them as they don't really show off the game as far as the depth and breadth that it has. But, since I couldn't put up a video or demo yet, they were the third best thing I had and the only real 'proof' I could provide at the time. But I really don't see how my reactions are trollish...? If you go back and read my posts, I've been extremely polite, patient, and understanding with everyone. Which is more than I can say for some others that replied... Either way, I'm doing what I can as I'm able to. If someone doesn't believe me, that's fine. @sonicyoda thx for the promotion man =D
  10. haha...wow...you guys are really something, ya know that? I'll ignore Pedro's childish comments because they really don't warrant a response. But PC0, what would be the point of trolling, pretending I made this game, to get this 'attention' from the 6 or 7 or so people that have responded? I can tell by your grammar and dialogue that you're smarter than that, dude. I sincerely assure you, this isn't trolling. I didn't come here to start some flame war, or to stir up trouble, or to make a topic that gets a lot of views, or to argue with a lot of people over their opinions. I came here for the ONE reason I already stated...to get more IDEAS for my game. That's it. LH, you've been nice and somewhat supportive. I'll PM you a demo and a vid as soon as I'm able to. As far as that goes, since everyone wants to throw around accusations, I guess I have to go into more detail and explain myself as to why I can't put up a video or demo right now... My laptop cannot run both the game and a video capture program at the same time. Just runs uber slow and looks shite. So I'm waiting for my little brother, who lives with me, to come home in the next couple days so that I can use his computer to record on. Call it an 'excuse' if you want, but that's the reason I don't have a video right now. A demo is just harder to put together than some people must be thinking, at least for this project it is. If I were to just put out the game 'as is' as a demo, for one, it would be a huge filesize. For two, everyone would be able to play EVERYthing I have in the game so far, which I don't want(then they would have played half the game already, the full kart racing game, and played with the whole chao system, making a full release less important). Before I make it 'demo'able, I've got to go in and place barriers, make it so that you can't exceed past certain limits, reduce the Chao possibilities, put some kind of limit on the kart racing so that you can't race more than the first 3 tracks(or so)...its just a lot of work. And don't get me wrong, I'm working on that, but it's not my top priority. You'll have to excuse me if I'm not in a rush to get a demo to a bunch of people that are dissing the game in the first place, and claiming it doesn't even exist. Anyways, I did open this discussion in a discussion forum. And we ARE discussing. I'm not trying to suppress that. People just weren't discussing what I came here to discuss...and again, THATS OK! I'm not pissed or anything, I'm just responding back and forth to questions and comments made at/about me/my game. That's all.
  11. alright, well I get it. Since no one HERE is interested, I'll take my work elsewhere I suppose. Anyone that actually is interested and wants to follow the progress can subscribe to my youtube channel @OfficialLilRoach, where I'll be posting my videos. I appreciate those who were at least decent about it, thanks for the time.
  12. okay...I'll take the time to respond to everyone's thoughts since you all took the time out to respond to mine... Number one...The reason I brought this here to show was to maybe get some more ideas for the game. Some more sports for the Chao to play that I didn't think of. A new ability to add in for Sonic that someone else thought would work nice. Things like that. If I was looking for assistance with the game, I would have posted this in the Fangaming Assistance portion of the board. Secondly, criticism is nothing new to me, and it's not the criticism of the game I was taking offense to. If you can't understand that, then I'm sorry, I don't know how else to explain it than by what I've already said in earlier posts. I realize you guys probably get a lot of people coming in here, showing some screenshots, spouting off a lot of text about some 'amazing game' they're working on, only to leave or not continue the game or have a lack of skills to complete it or what have you. That's why I decided NOT to come here and post all of this about 3 or 4 months ago when I first planned the game out. I waited until I had a LOT done. I didn't even cover everything in my first post because it was getting way too long. Everything I mentioned is already fully implemented into the game, not something I just 'plan on doing'. I even mentioned in my first post that I will have some videos and a playable demo up soon, but just like the other things, people ignore that and are like 'OMG there R n0 vidz htiss game is d3h suX0rSS!1!!" lol im exaggerating obviously but seriously, pretty much everything people asked me about was explained in the first post. All I came here looking for was some more ideas to help build upon the game. Some people had other plans, and I even said that I'd take all of those into consideration too because I do understand where everyone is coming from. I don't see why all the animosity. EDIT: Wow, speak for everyone much? I don't know where you get your statistics from, but as a gamer myself, I can tell you that I personally LOVE reading about a new game. And lmao at "This should be a Sonic game". Isn't this the board for ANY type of game you're working on?
  13. You seem to be catching the wrong drift, P3DRO. Criticism is wonderful, it's nothing new to me. Every line of work I'm involved with sees me being critiqued. The thing here was, I noted in my first post that I realized the graphics and etc were not up to snuff. Some people ignored that and still needed to comment on it...and I'm fine with that, too. The only reason I was retorting was to explain my positioning, in why I didn't want to use Sonic Worlds or some other premade engine. And no, I'm not trying to please someone ELSE with my game. If that's honestly how and why you work, then okay. Maybe that's how people do things where you're from. But for me, any game I make would be just hte same in my eyes whether I was the only one who played or whether it was played by a thousand folks. Sure, it feels good when people enjoy something you spent time on, but that's not why you do it. Look at music, I'm a musician as well, and I don't do music for other people. It's for me and if other people like it, then great =D Anyways, I feel like I shouldn't have to explain myself
  14. Okay, well it appears as if Ive gotten as far as I'm going to get here. Once again, I appreciate everyone's responses, and everything mentioned in here will be taken into consideration as I continue to work on the game. Now, with that said...the last thing I came here for was to get 'tips' or 'advice'. I've been making games for 10 years now, my programming skills are honed and precise. that may not be apparent from the pictures I've posted, but that's why I mentioned in my first post, (and I'll quote)..."I'd say presentation is my weakness. But I do have some help from my brother, a graphic artist. All 'cheap' looking graphics and text you see in screenshots or videos will likely be touched up by him before a final release. " I figured that would be enough to let everyone know that the presentation of the game was in VERY early stages. All in all, I suppose I'd be giving the same sort of reaction if I had seen someone just post up some of these pictures and ask for advice. But I really feel that if you don't give the game a second glance just because it doesn't look like what you're used to...well then, as I said, it's your loss and not mine. It's already out of the question that I 'might be the only person to enjoy the game' because everyone I've let play it has a great time whether it be with the kart racing, the chao system, running through levels or what have you. So I've already got that out of it. So even if no one else ever plays it, it's still a bad ass game that I can play myself to pass a few hours, and that's great to me. Exactly. And why should I limit my 'dreams' or expectations to what other people are looking for? Why not do things the way I see fit, instead of conforming and trying to please others? Maybe that sounds selfish of me, but whatevs. I'll have some vids to post up soon, and I think it's safe to say that 99% of games look better in motion than in still pictures.
  15. Thank you again for the response, it really is appreciated. I guess when it comes down to it, the graphical 'style'(and I use that term loosely) of my game MAY be too different, or unorganized for some people to fully enjoy. But, to me, that's their loss. I could never spend 3 years on a game, I feel I would get bored with it after too much time. Anyways, I don't take personal offense to anyone disliking the way the game looks. BUT, I will say that you should at least hold off on judgement until playing the game yourself, or at least seeing it in action. The sheer depth of the game modes, IMO, makes up for the lack of presentation. I've got 10 testers right now, that live in or around my neighborhood. Each of them has given me lists upon lists of bugs, glitches, and fixes I need to make to the game. None of them has mentioned to me about the art direction, because none of them were expecting to play a really pretty game. As it stands right now, my main tester can sit down with the game and play for about 3 hours, building up his Chao, running through the levels that are there, playing the mini games, and exploring the areas. That's 3 hours of fun from a game that's not even 1/4 finished. If I want to play some good Sonic games, with an excellent engine and great graphics and all that good stuff, then I'll play a classic Genesis game. If that doesn't satisfy my needs, I'll play one of BlazeHedgehog's, or any of the other fine games up for download here(Eggman Hates Furries being my recent fav). All I'm trying to do is offer up something different from the norm. Some people won't like it, and that's to be expected. But I'm obviously not making the game for those people. I'm making it for myself, and for the people who will enjoy this type of game =D
