  1. Sonic vs Darkness - True Nightmare Revived Powered by Sol Engine V2 on Game Maker 8.0 Introducing a Sonic fan game titled Sonic vs Darkness - True Nightmare Revived created by yours truly. Sonic vs Darkness T.N.R. is a remake of my very first Sonic fan game Sonic vs Darkness, which began as a sprite-animated Sonic series project on YouTube. This fan game features two playable characters Sonic the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog, and 7 different stages inspired by the stages from the original fan game. The game will also feature comic-style cut-scenes that appear as you progress through the game. You are also able to purchase power-ups & shields from the Item Shop while in the HUB Area. Like the original version, the gameplay style is inspired by modern Sonic games Sonic Rush and Sonic Unleashed. Including Super Smash Brothers Melee/Brawl (All-Star Mode). Release date of the official demo will likely be around the time of the SAGExpo 2014 Act 2 Event. Stick around to see more updates! - Storyline - Sonic and Shadow must collect all of the Chaos Emeralds before Dr. Eggman's creation Project Erubis grabs hold of them to spread eternal darkness around the world. 2. You know, I just wanna say something about all of this. You can't join together inspiration and copying as if they're the same thing, They're not. There's a very clear line between inspired and copying. If you create a game that just has a similar aesthetic or style but is still original in concepts and elements, or even a completely unique game because another game motivated you, that's inspiration. If you straight up copy elements like graphics and concepts, then tweak them a bit and call it yours, that's copying, and that's essentially what you're doing. Overture works directly from the source material while Reborn copies and imitates an existing fangame. Overture's graphics are 100% original (and do not attempt to imitate someone else's project) save for obvious fundamental features such as, well, Sonic himself. Reborn's graphics are various things copied and imitated from someone else's fangame. Those are not the same kinds of "borrowing". We're not in a glass house, we're in a stainless steel house if you know what I mean. Please, don't let your "inspirations" directly lead the project, I've been in that territory with Sonic from The Beginning. I'll admit, looking back at that, I'm not proud of it at all, I'm actually ashamed of it. (I'm sure most of you remember it, don't lie to yourselves, it was terrible). I'm glad I didn't go the "rip-off/harcore inspiration" route, and thus ended up making a product with heart and honest intent. Here's this for instance: Sonic From the Beginning (LakeFeperd "inspired", often called a rip-off) Sonic Overture (Once it stopped being "inspired" by Lake) Now compare these images and and think about it, I hope you see my point. Another thing, you don't need skill to be original. Overture could have one fourth the skill in it's artwork and it would still be just as original, and an imitation could have four times the skill and still be just as much an imitation. I'd SERIOUSLY reconsider what you're doing, I've been in your place, and I know how it feels, trust me when I say it's NOT the way to go.

  3. Uh... why people are taking the fact that this is based of ATS/BTS as a bad thing? I just want to get this clear: I'm FINE with poeple copying, getting inspired and/or ripping off ANYTHING from my SONIC FAN GAMES games. i'm no creator, my ideas always come from somewhere, for an exanple: the boss battle, also from sonic advance 2. Even if this guy is making a fan game out of a fan game, the ideas present in BTS/ATS are not owned by me by any means, they are just ideas. Alrighty, so... In my oppinion, originality, accurate sonic mechanics or anything else people make a big deal about. Is NOT what making a fan game is all about, for me, making a fan game is about learning how to make a game, you can be unoriginal as far as you want, that is NOT A PROBLEM, as long as you learn something. So, for the guy working on this. Keep up the work man. Although i haven't played the game yet, i'll try later whem you upload it to another download page, like mediafire or dropbox. Oh, don't mind my typos, they are everywhere.

  4. OK THIS GAME SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! WORST DEMO EVER!! I normally dont say this but i needs to be said! I totally hated this game the minute i played it. I was so angry to see a fan game where sonic stood upright like in the official genesis games when going up and down hills, he should have been angled to every curve, or slide down hills when I clearly wanted him to stand on the curve. I hated how when you got to the interior of places the wall wasn't just the ground with a darker shade like most of the fan games that Ive come across. The presentation was horrendous too! the levels themselves looked well though out. Also I totally hated these physics too it was too in control and sonic didn't accelerate like a winded beast on hills like most fan games that boast super real physics, he felt more like healthy mix between sonic 2 and 4 and that's no good. The only parts can credit was the linearity of the game and the fact that some of the time there objects/paths that look like I can walk on only to find out it was just back ground, oh and that generic boss fight was tops, I was thoroughly entertained by that boss fight. But aside from all that, you should just re-evaluate your life now. Mad props to Lange for setting you strait on some stuff. A/BTS totally came to my mind when I was playing because a/bts Sonic is totally not taken from any source, and is the only fan game of its kind that doesn't edit or re-use sprites, again re-think your life cause stealing is all you did. You shouldn't be proud of this.

  7. Lake hit the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned. I was going to chime in earlier before going to work about this but he really said all that needed to be said. These are fan games guys - and while it is nice to have pride in your fan games and make them to the best of your ability there is no reason to pretend what we do here is original in the slightest. All the games here use assets and ideas from a well established franchise. It's about learning how to work towards making a game as Lake put it. I think the thing is to just play nice kiddos, 'cause we're all here to make cool games and art and stuff together. I think there has been a lot of derisiveness around here lately and while I don't expect everything to be all peachy all of the time (I know I've been a bit of a dick here and there in the past myself ) I think we should start giving each other a little more respect. A good community isn't going to thrive out of everyone being at each other's throats! So let's all take a chill pill and make some games.

  9. Ok, no need to be totally rude. If you read it at all it you'd have realized that it was a sarcastic post, Complimenting the game in an indirect way. You know like satire. But calling me a smarta** with no basis to do so i feel is an abuse of modship powers sir, and that's where the joke stops being funny and becomes serious. I feel that I am in need of an apology from you sir. Just cause your an admin doesn't give you right to throw stones. (you even deleted my comment I have a copy too to prove my point)

  10. Inspiration is not the same thing as copying. From the Beginning started out as copying B/ATS, which is why it was reformed into Overture to be a fully original project. You couldn't even tell it was "inspired" by Lake's games anymore. When you explicitly copy elements, then mess with them slightly, and build your game around these copied elements, it's more of a copy than an inspiration.

  11. Better yet put it on something sensible that works for everyone. Like Mediafire. Seriously just use mediafire. Its quick easy and not a pain to download from it. I'll play it later today if I get a chance to, I'm in a crunch time at the moment but this has interested me enough to take a gander at it.

  12. Darth is indeed generic and I don't see the point of making him look like Bingo. Making him look like Bingo insinuates that he is some how connected to Bingo in ways the player may or may not come to know. Shadow looks like Sonic because the plot needed Sonic to loose his reputation by someone impersonating him and stealing shit, thus having a connection between Shadow and Sonic, thus having shadow look like sonic. Not only that, but Shadow has similar gameplay to sonic, connecting him even more to sonic. If Darth isn't doing anything like that then I see no reason for him to bear resemblance of any kind to Bingo unless he's like his dad or something. *cliche plot twist here* He's also not very threatening and could do with some more evil features, like making him look bigger or bulkier than Bingo, have floating hands or spikes or something going on.

  13. I had brought up how un appealing the game looks due to the amount of clashing going on with the visuals and the need for unity in them at some point and this just adds to that. Fantastic example for the HUD and character select. It looks like the game had actual art direction as opposed to the modded jumble of stitched together information that is the current game. We are actually trying to help you make a better game, the least you could do is consider doing something with the advice we give rather than just doing your way or the highway. Or not, but this example is some damn good advice and would be a shame to not do any thing with it.

  14. So far I'm more interested in the plot than any other aspect of the game, specifically Rise of Lyric. Having an animal enhanced by technology and delights in that fact (and can communicate with Sonic, as opposed to say the Biolizard) butting heads with Sonic, the force of nature, could make for some really engaging dialog. The producer specifically mentioned technological enhancements as one of Lyric's traits so I really hope they come through with that. More than anything if the plot takes itself seriously I hope the game is structured akin to SA2, where the campaign felt like a story-driven journey as opposed to a bunch of platforming stages with a silly cutscene after each one. Not bashing the Colors approach, but rather the Lost World approach. A kidnapped Tails and a forced alliance between Sonic and Eggman are concepts that could have been really interesting but ultimately felt pointless and under-utilized, respectively. Fingers crossed for Boom!

  15. Ok; so I made these just to sorta prove a point, about having a style and consistency Nothing in here was drawn. Also I suggest you also organize your roster. Keep fan characters (Black box) in there own section and organize the official dudes too in a way that players can find characters easier. Also, I added a mode option in the "Screen" if your into that. You know like turbo and turbo2 from MvC2 (xbla) I did get lazy making these; but these are just visual feed back suggestions nothing more. Make what you want to make.

  16. While I probably won't be picking up a Wii U anytime soon, Boom actually doesn't look that bad. The combat is kind of cool and looks pretty refreshing actually. Just wish Sonic was a bit faster and there were more slopes instead of the context specific ramps... I guess there's the speed segments but they kind of give me Secret Rings/06 mach speed vibes.

  17. Neo, let's not go there... @Ricardo Raiohardt: I'm really liking how that level is turning out! Although one thing that bugs me is how the colours/textures on the building kind of clash with the rest of the colours. Mainly the gold, cyan, violet, and green. Although that could be just cause of the outside tile on the ground, maybe de-saturate that some and it would pull the rest of it together? You could also add like little pieces of broken tile to create a smooth boundary between the tile and the grass instead of just fading it out. Also, in my opinion, the water could be a bit less reflective and a tiny bit more blue, it almost looks like glass or ice. Again, in my opinion, the entryway shot there looks a little dark, why not increase the lighting given off by the fluorescent tubes in the ceiling to brighten things up some?
