There are many ongoing rumors surrounding companies, including Microsoft, being interested in acquiring SEGA. In a new interview with CNBC, SEGA’s Cheif Operating Officer Shuji Utsumi has clarified they are not looking for a buyer.

Many companies are interested. We feel honored,

We have attractive IPs and potentials. Companies owned by the owner. A strong owner. I don’t think that kind of transaction is going to happen.

SEGA’s Cheif Operating Officer Shuji Utsumi responds to the acquisition rumors.

In 2020, Microsoft Xbox boss Phil Spencer requested approval from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Microsoft CFO Amy Hood to begin negotiations with SEGA to potentially acquire the company to promote the growth of Game Pass. While Microsoft’s acquisition of SEGA didn’t proceed, an internal April 2021 merger review document listed SEGA as a key target.

Furthermore, Utsumi stated SEGA is still looking for opportunities for growth and mentioned SEGA’s recent $775 million acquisition of Rovio; the developers of Angry Birds. Utsumi also detailed how SEGA would like to bring more franchises to more areas.

As I say, we are trying to be in a lot of different categories, different areas like Roblox, movies,

All these IPs can be somewhere else other than games soon.

Utsumi details how SEGA is interested in bringing their franchises to more areas.
