During an interview with Sonic Revolution, Christian Whitehead has revealed at one point Infinite had been planned to appear in Sonic Mania before being scrapped. SEGA wanted Sonic Mania to be connected with Sonic Forces and had asked the Sonic Mania development team if they could include Infinite. The Sonic Mania development team had not been given many details regarding Infinite by SEGA and ultimately the project moved forward without Infinite.
