Sonic Hacking Contest Day 6 and 7 A Conclusion

For this final article, this will be less about a specific entry and more about my experience with the event as a whole. As the week and SHC has officially ended, I’m left with a very peculiar feeling. Bearing witness to a wide variety of talent all around, its truly something to behold and sometimes I think we take it for granted.

How many other communities do this? How many other communities are able to get away with it in the first place. I say that as a statement rather than a question. Holding whole promoted fan-game showcases and hacking contests; being within this community flourishes so many aspects of creativity, it’s hard to imagine what it’d be like if Sega and Sonic Team weren’t so lenient with us like many other companies.

Fans themselves are so dedicated to these projects. It’s amazing how they’ve modified, changed and even extended or overhauled these games. It’s a large task to take on and yet so many do it. It’s the norm to see these kinds of projects in the community to the point where now people just expect it and I just feel like we need to remind ourselves how it’s all possible. Many like to make comments like “this is better than anything Sonic Team makes” or “Sega should hire this person!” and while it’s debatable in some aspects, I’m grateful for their patience with us.

This community is truly something unique and playing the entries of this event really reminded me of why I continue to actively partake in it. The SHC entries were all very cool and I can’t wait to see where all the creators go from here and potentially what may come of the next SHC. This was a very fun experience all in all and I can’t wait for future Sonic fan related events like this.
