Sonic Hacking Contest 2021 Day 2 and Day 3 Familiar Locations

For past two days of the contest, I spent my time fiddling with some more Sonic Generations entries. There were two others that I wanted to try and those were the Apotos/Shamar Adventure Pack and Sonic 06 Definitive Experience. This will be a much more brief and concise article since these mods are recreating existing past titles, that however does not mean they lack in any department. Both were quite fun pass times and unique experiences in their own right.

Apotos/Shamar Adventure Packs – By tuanpingas

As the name of the mod implies, this contest entry provides the extra stage levels from Sonic Unleashed to play in Sonic Generations and might I say it did a good job reminding me of how punishing these stages were. Not in the same vain as a Dimps made level with a bunch of random pits, but by how deliberately they’re designed to throw you back into areas you’re trying to escape. They’re very cheeky levels, but fun and satisfying to learn the rhythm of.

As for the mod itself, its very faithful in recreating the level design to work in Generations, though at times you can feel the difference in physics noticeably in certain speedier sections. I did encounter a few bugs, though nothing completely game-breaking. In the main hub area, it is a bit of a struggle to navigate without camera control and thus I died a lot looking for the stages themselves. I don’t quite know if that was simply just an issue on my part, but it was there nonetheless. There were also some strange collision issues where I got stuck in an invisible wall during Act 3 of Arid Sands, but I was able to break free by boosting a bit. Other than that though, the stages were playable and worked well enough for me to enjoy myself. I got bodied by the 1-2 stage in the Shamar pack though, but that is simply a skill issue on my part.

Onto the next mod, I tried out Sonic 06 in Generations. This is a joint experience between one of the contest entries and a mod from the expo section of SHC.

Sonic 06 Definitive Experience & STH2006 Project Demo 5 – By brianuuu

The main mod here of the contest is the Definitive Experience project in which the goal was to import/recreate the model, animations and physics from Sonic 06 and put them in Generations. While it is possible to use this mod in regular Sonic Generations stages, it was highly recommended by the creator to use alongside their Project Demo that imports Sonic 06 levels into Generations as well.

While it also tries to remain faithful to the original level design, it’s much more noticeable here what needed to change. Needing to boost in certain sections now to get through them and adjusting sections where you’d use a character other than Sonic to complete them with Sonic himself. It makes sense though given the kind of game it is and how different it functions compared to Generations. It’s very impressive to me that the creator was able make this work as well as it does. The physics are obviously not quite one to one with 06, but I believe this is probably the closest you’ll get within this game. It’s certainly very close to capturing the original feel and I applaud the creator for that.

Other than that, there were also quite a few neat little Easter eggs littered around the mod like maintaining certain funny glitches on purpose. Or this “tutorial” sequence that I found to be quite amusing.

Quite literally a video of Silver getting kicked in the head

All in all, these mods are a nice reflection of how large Sonic Generations modding has become. Truly the central hub of all the past Sonic games and memories. I’m always amazed by what people are able to make and change this game into and hopefully there’s more in the future.
