Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Sequel needs Crush 40 Music

With the Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel recently confirming a release date of April 8th, 2022, many fans have plenty of reason to be hyped. The original film, which did exceptionally well, seemed to accomplish the impossible and brake the “video game movie curse” in which films were always destined to do poorly at the box office if they were based off of any sort of video game property. The filmmakers and studio have been very open to viewer and fanbase feedback, as in the example of the major redesign Sonic underwent as a result of a very vocal backlash about how the character looked.

So, what could the studio do next to help solidify that connection between their vision of Sonic the Hedgehog and an already engaged viewer base? They could put Crush 40 songs into the soundtrack!

Crush 40, a name that is synonymous with Sonic music.

If there is one thing that is almost universally recognized about the Sonic the Hedgehog games, it is that the music is some of the best when compared to other video game soundtracks. During the era of the Dreamcast, this was also punctuated with amazing tracks like “Open Your Heart” and “Live and Learn”. These songs by Johnny Gioeli and Jun Senoue, who make up Crush 40, feature searing vocals and rocking riffs that make up some of the best memories ever for playing Sonic the Hedgehog games.

Crush 40 have become synonymous with Sonic the Hedgehog music, as the band is often at the forefront with a theme song that directly represents the entire concept of the game. Considering just how many Sonic games there are, this is an impressive feat. Their songs also do something that many other artists so often fail to do: they add to the narrative and help encompass just how epic the moments of the game really are. In the case of Sonic Adventure, once you hear Johhny Gioeli’s vocal tone hammer over the top of Jun’s riff in “Open Your Heart”, you feel the tension between Super Sonic and Perfect Chaos as all of Station Square watches on.

Super Sonic’s epic showdown in Sonic Adventure was made even more iconic with the inclusion of “Open Your Heart” playing in the background.

Not only does the band have the talent and artistry to keep producing hit after hit, but they are also beloved by the community. Often times, when there is a Sonic-type event, you would not be surprised to see the duo rocking out on stage, churning out rock like no other. If the film makers want to continue the trend of looking towards positive community feedback, why not take something like the music of the Sonic games and spin it into the cinematic universe? We already know that Crush 40 can make theme music like nobody else and what better way to get people hyped about the new film than with a little rock music to go with it?
