GSF
Sonic Rush is sample incarnate - that's why it's so awesome. As for the Haunted Ship sample, I had it somewhere but YT accounts have been killed... So I had to hunt it down. Here ya go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTJTDrcEveQ#t=51 EDIT: Y'know what, here's something... http://www.whosampled.com/song-tag/Sonic%20the%20Hedgehog/samples/ Go wild. <3

Sir Spacebar
Wow, that's some obscure shit right there. I also discovered the song has an official instrumental. Speaking of tracks made by funk fiction, this would come to no surprise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idA02jj6CTQ Wolf Rayet is basically a remix in disguise. The bassline is the exact same, with minor differences, especially with the use of "Hit that switch and HYPER-ZOOM!" sample. i know im l8 m8, pls dont h8
Nemox
Frozen Factory Act 2 sounds quite a lot like Rooftop Run in some parts, and it's why I chose it for my recent ice physics demo. There's also a small phrase in Dreams of an Absolution that sounds like Green Hill Zone.
Mr. Potatobadger
Glad to see this thread is popular again! @Nemox You should show us! Link some youtube videos and give us times.
Nemox
http://youtu.be/Md5IXNdRV44 Dreams of an Absolution, at the 0:43 mark or so. You'll recognize the part from Green hill this kinda reminds me of. Not the best comparison out there, but I think it may kinda allude to it a little. I was mistaken on the other though. I had gotten Spagonia and Apotos' music confused. Turns out... http://youtu.be/jqkCTmhd1cg?t=26s Frozen Factory, at 0:26. Sounds like: http://youtu.be/rDhIJV8L_sI?t=28s Apotos Day Stage at 0:28.
MrLevRocks
Strange has nobody has noticed the similarities between Sonic Generation's OST and every other Sonic game's OST... But now seriously, nobody has noticed this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzCvE5py2B0 At 1:20 sound similar to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0piixxCTmo At 0:15 Also this at 0:06 and this from 0:00 onwards.Which is itself a remix of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDt4FJLH9ww... There is also this: and Seems that Dimps was lazy on Sonic Advance 3's music part...
MrLevRocks
Seems that Dimps was lazy on Sonic Advance 3's music part... I may correct myself, Seems that Dimps was REALLY lazy on Sonic Advance 3's music part because there were more moments of music recycle: This https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7dnjX92m3o and this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wMn0RHM2T0&noredirect=1 are simple examples, but what bothers me is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJGTvGY9X50 While it sounds like it was based of Sónic 1's Green Hill Zone, which it is, the part that stranges me out is that, like other Sonic Advance 3 Songs, it can be/ is based of a Sonic Battle track, namely this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUcPydVABIk Also, is it just me or does Amy's Room from Battle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-fy80PTfOs sound like Toy Kingdom from Advance 3? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFjCgmH0KSc Maybe I'll find more, but that was almost the entire Sonic Battle Soundtrack... Mr. Potatobadger
You forgot one Ok, I wasn't going to correct you the first time, but since you came back and had more, it looks like I'll have to shine light on the matter... First off, all of the sonic game boy advance games are canonically in line with each other, except for sonic genesis, of course. This means the order goes as follows: Sonic Advance Sonic Advance 2 Sonic Battle Sonic Advance 3 Sonic advance 1-3 (including battle) don't have really any story consistencies, EXCEPT for Battle, and Advance 3, which are direct tie-ins. Sonic battle took place before sonic advance 3. Calling the musicians lazy for making the music similar to a direct sequel is not a bright idea. Do you really think the musicians were like, "Aww man, we gotta make another track?? Uhh, lets just remix this one, it's close enough." No, that would be stupid. Nonagression is the final showdown with Gemeral, who is built off of the remains of Emerl, who is essentially an upgrade of Phi. I think it would be pretty stupid to not use (G)emerl's theme for the closing boss of the entire advanced series, especially since Gemeral, Emeral, and Phi are essentially the same robot, and share the same theme. That's not laziness, that's keeping up with the continuity. As for the other things, the same thing pretty much applies. Toy kingdom sounds like toy kingdom because they use similar instrumentation, and use similar musical patterns to sound childish. Pretty much all music intended to sound childish sounds similar to itself. Amy's room sounds a lot more like, I dunno... Every other song in the game? There's a small musical motif in the game that is in like every song. Just listen to twinkle snow there, that's the best example. THIS ISN'T BEING LAZY EITHER. That's keeping with the theme of the game. It's like how a lot of the songs it Sonic ATS have the Horizon Heights theme snuck in, it's the game's Motif. Is that being lazy? Hell no! I'll have you know, working a musical motif into different genres of music is really hard. It's most definitely NOT lazy. Holy Summit & Tikal's theme. Do I really have to say something for this one?... Literally every person in the universe who has played through sonic battle and sonic adventure know exactly why the songs sounds the same. (plus the theme is awesome) Tails Lab and Route 99? This one is more understandable, but essentially the same idea. Don't even get me started on the green hill zone thing... Look man, this stuff is all really self explanatory. It's not being lazy, it's keeping with the continuity of themes. Most of these songs are themes, anyway. Why would you make a new theme for something that already has one for every game? I could go on forever about this.Hopefully you get the idea. GSF
Overall, I loved Wawe Master's work with the Advance soundtracks. The first time I heard Sunset Hill felt amazing. Other great tracks that stand out for me are Library, Sky Canyon, Route 99 and Chaos Angel. Man, these are good. It's normal for games to keep themes, as Potato says. Mario uses the same leitmotifs all the time. Same for Zelda. It's an identity of the series. As for Sonic, the identity would be either the S1 title screen song or Green Hill.
Sir Spacebar
For the horizon heights references in ATS, not only does dream dance act 1 have that blatant reference, it also uses the EXACT same bassline. Not really interesting but just something I noticed.
Mr. Potatobadger
Isn't necessarily a musical similarity, but close enough. I just discovered the techno voice in the beginning is most likely SAM from the Commodore 64. Also, does anyone else know what the other samples are from? Especially the one where it sounds like the guy is saying "lay in the wax, spin in the center"
MrLevRocks
While I don't want to post here because I could get people pissed off, I still have the urge to post this... I'd like to talk about a game's OST noody seems to talk about: Knuckles Chaotix. While a couple of the songs have a "theme" in them (Evening Star, Moonrise, New Moon and Walkin') the song I want to talk about is Tachy Touch. It seems that this song (at least for me) has a subtle similarity to the Special Stage theme from Sonic CD: Even more interesting is that both songs are used for (partially) non-story related stages... An other similarity, but that may just be my mistake, is "Nobody told me about id" from DooM and Wrapped in black from Sonic Rush. I don't know why, but the bass and the drums of both songs sound incredibly similar. I don't know maybe I'm thinking that I am just being stupid again... Mr. Potatobadger
See, this is good. Those songs are legitimately similar. This first few times you posted, you were accusing songs that were essentially remixes of being lazily composed. This is different, those songs are legitimately similar. I didn't "yell" at you, I just corrected you. Which is OK, this is the internet, get used to that. It's healthy. Critique is ALWAYS healthy, whether the critique is good or bad. But yea, thank you for contributing, and please don't feel afraid to post in this thread

JiyakoZen
Hell to the yeah, I've been looking for something like this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xH5rFYaQWxE (Alexandrite II from Blazblue: Chrono Phantasma) (Subdivisions by Rush) If you listen towards middle of each song you can hear a very clear similarity. Let me be more specific: Subdivisions: 2:16 - 2:39, 3:57 - 4:40 Alexandrite II: 3:20 - 3:46 These sections sound very similar - probably due to the key of the songs (B minor). Alexandrite II also has the general Rush sound as it has varied meter (time signature changes). Sorry if I'm being too technical =P.
Serephim
Seems that Dimps was lazy on Sonic Advance 3's music part... All the same musicians, don't see why they can't sample their own stuff, from the same game series, in a game that features an absurd amount of unique tracks for a GBA game. Nothing to do with Sonic but I thought this was funny: That cancelled angst game Nobou was composing for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBR3CcJslC4#t=82 KC and Jojo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yocxPScqe_k#t=38 Was only like 10 seconds but I heard it immediately and it stuck
Mr. Potatobadger
First of all, I didn't even know there was an "Act 2" version of the 16 bit Sugar Splash music. And it sounds awesome. Anyways, the part from 0:07 to 0:014 in Sugar Splash sounds quite similar to 0:39 in this:
