Sonic Mania is a delightful return to the 2D platforming style that first made the hedgehog a star. The love from the development team for 16-bit Sonic is evident in every moment of the game. Fans of classic Sonic must buy this game, but the excellent level design, music, and graphics will please all people who enjoy a well-thought-out sidescroller.Gamespot – 9/10
Sonic Mania methodically uses its sentimental appeal to great effect, but in the process, it heals the wounds inflicted by its most disappointing predecessors and surpasses the series’ best with its smart and interpretive design. An excellent 2D platformer, Sonic Mania goes beyond expectations, managing to be not only a proper evolution of the series’ iconic formula, but the best Sonic game ever made.IGN – 8.7/10

Sonic Mania is short but sweet. It even functions as a proper Sonic 4 if you don’t count the episodic Sonic 4 (remember that one?).
Sonic Mania has been a hit with fans since it was announced. Taxman and his team has certainly proven they can do an excellent job with the series.

Here’s what I’m thinking… (SPOILERS may abound, so don’t read below if you haven’t played/beaten Sonic Mania completely)
The ending has some heavily implications that it’ll connect with the upcoming Sonic Forces, so here’s what I think: I’m thinking that SEGA is starting to make a “new” continuity. Like, Sonic 1, 2, CD, 3&K, and Mania are part of a different continuity, the “Classic continuity”. I support this with Eggman’s dialogue during the Egg Dragoon Boss fight shown off for Sonic Forces:
“You’ve got a lot of nerve for a pint-sized Sonic from another dimension.”
That further supports my “theory”. I think SEGA is trying to please different types of fans by making different continuities:
The Classic Continuity, the Modern Continuity, and the Boom Continuity.
Given how well Mania did, I have a feeling that a sequel could potentially happen. I would say they’d be crazy NOT to make a sequel, but… well, time will tell.
If they really ARE making Sonic 1-Mania be a different continuity from the one starting with Sonic Adventure, then we could have three continuties and a chance for more Classic Sonic specific games like Mania and more Modern Sonic specific games like Forces, and more Boom Sonic specific games like…. Umm, Fire & Ice (I refuse to acknowledge the Wii U title, sorry to be THAT guy).
Again, this might just be my own personally theory.
