Sonic Colors Ultimate: The Switch Version Misconception (UPDATED)

Sonic Colors Ultimate: The Switch Version Misconception (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Following the controversy of the legitimacy of the seizure inducing glitches from a few days ago, it turns out that users have figured out how to deliberately trigger the glitches on real hardware.

WARNING: Flashing Lights and Epileptic Imagery

Hopping from area to area too much can result in a memory leak which causes the game to flip out and do the insane looking glitches that’s been posted all over twitter. Please note that just because you can deliberately induce the glitches through this method, this does not mean it’s unlikely to get on a normal play-through. The reason we all found out about these glitches in the first place were because people ran into them randomly. On the other hand, this 100% confirms the issues being legitimate and able to be replicated on real non-modified switch hardware including the infamous “Fish Sonic”.

There is light in all of this though and not the seizure inducing kind. Earlier yesterday on twitter, Sonic Social Media Manager Katie (also known as @KatieChrz) announced that the team behind the game are reading feedback and are assessing it for a now confirmed upcoming patch.

She also mentioned that they are aware of the emulator glitch which is also not within their realm of control to fix. Aside from that, she listed a link to Sega’s support section where you can contact them about any and all issues you’ve run into while playing Sonic Colors Ultimate.

With a patch confirmed, what are your hopes for the future of Sonic Colors Ultimate? If most of the issues are fixed, will your opinion of the game change? Let us know in the comments below!

Original Article Starts Here

Since early access of Sonic Colors Ultimate became available to the public, various users in and out of the sonic community noticed very quickly that there were many things off about the game. Various bugs were littered throughout it, there were random freezes and frame drops. For some, the game would crash often and others have incredibly long loading times compared to the original version of the game.

However, one version of the game seems to be consistent among all the issues. That being the Nintendo Switch version of the game. It’s become notorious for various glitches, some even considered borderline game breaking. These glitches would be very intense visual bugs that would effect the whole screen and could be considered seizure inducing. Multiple reports of this came out and many found it quite surprising. However, one twitter user was skeptical of them and had heard about the possibility of them being fake.

A statement that eventually proved quite troublesome

Eventually she would come across a tweet (that has now since been deleted) where a twitter user showed a video of Sonic in a T-Pose stance and was playing the game with him like that. Then she noticed something very odd.

The twitter user who posted the video later confirmed that yes, they were in fact using Yuzu emulator when the specific glitch occurred.

As a result of this, they soon came under fire as many people started accusing them of deception and also started to point out that this was defamation of a product by not being truthful about what was actually going on. ExtraKotaru has now deleted/deactivated their account.

Soon after this, CrafterArmys decided to investigate some more and found that yes, the T-Pose glitch was a result of Yuzu emulator.

So does this mean that all the hubbub on twitter was for nothing and that people were faking all of those insane glitches?

No. No it does not. In fact, the only thing this proved is that it was just the T-Pose glitch that was a result of Yuzu emulator. CrafterArmy’s original statement about the seizure inducing glitches being fake were not proved at all. In fact, because of the tweet going viral, some have come forward to prove these glitches happened to them under non-modified hardware.

WARNING: Potentially Seizure Inducing Content

This is among many others who have comes forward, but if a simple off-screen recording is still not enough to quench your skepticism, reddit user u/bendiego05 posted a screenshot of a similar visual glitch happening on their Nintendo Switch Lite a day prior.

This is notable because currently, Yuzu emulator is not compatible with the Switch Lite. Which means what is happening here is a legitimate result of the game not working as intended.

Now why did I write this article? We know that Colors Ultimate is having more than a few issues, especially on switch version and it has been assumed that potential patches may fix them. However, because of the tweet questioning the validity of the bugs and glitches, we have run into an issue. Now many people are claiming all the glitches are faked and that is simply not true. These seizure inducing glitches are an actual issue. However, now people who are genuinely trying to bring certain issues to light are being met with heavy skepticism. This is also a problem for Sega/Blind Squirrel Entertainment as because of the shift in the narrative, they may find it harder to figure out what and what may not need fixing for a potential patch.

I wrote this article to hopefully clear up all the misconceptions, because right now tweets like these are not what we need (no disrespect to HMK, this is meant to be informative.).

This is not what happened.

The “Super Wild Glitches” were not a result of Yuzu emulator. Only the T-Pose glitch. Other glitches can happen in or out of Yuzu emulator and is not exclusive to it. The game does in fact have issues and hopefully they will be addressed by the developers soon enough.
