Ryan Drummond Addresses Previous Reach-out to Reprise Sonic Role
by Administrator August 8, 2021 3 commentsWe previously reported on Ryan Drummond’s agent reaching out to SEGA to reprise voicing Sonic in February. This was following Roger Craig Smith’s temporary departure. Ryan Drummond has now responded to a fan query which addresses the situation.
This is pretty accurate. When Roger left, my agent contacted Sega and told them I was available to come back if Roger was not coming back AND we could reach an agreement on terms. Well, we all know how that turned out.

The details in between Roger Craig Smith’s departure and return are currently not known. It’s possible Ryan Drummond and SEGA could not reach an agreement and Roger Craig Smith was brought back. It’s also possible SEGA had always intended for Roger Craig Smith to voice Sonic and discussions with Ryan Drummond did not go any further than the reach out between Ryan Drummond’s agent and SEGA. Regardless, it’s interesting for Ryan Drummond to clear up the details.
Ryan Drummond was the official voice of Sonic from 1998-2004. In 2005, Jason Griffith took over the role. Ryan Drummond almost returned to voicing Sonic again in 2010 following Jason Griffith’s departure. Due to issues at the time between SEGA and Ryan Drummond’s union, plans for Drummond to return fell through and Roger Craig Smith was chosen and has voiced Sonic since.

Jump into a conversationIt’s very unfortunate that this didn’t turn out differently. Would have preferred his return, instead.
I still think it may happen in the future.
Same, I could never get past how RCS makes Sonic sound like a guy in his thirties. Would have preferred to have Drummond back.
