Original Sonic the Hedgehog creators Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima are back together on a brand new project Balan Wonderworld. The project is in development at Square Enix and is reminiscent of the original Sonic Team. There are a lot of similarities between Balan Wonderworld and NiGHTS.
Balan Wonderworld is a 3D platformer featuring vibrant characters and worlds. The project was originally announced at Xbox’s channel. Yuji Naka has described Balan Wonderworld as being “set in the mysterious world of people’s hearts” “In everyone’s hearts, there’s a mixture of positive emotions – happiness and joy – and negative emotions – restless fears and worry. When the balance between positive and negative emotions is destroyed, the door to Wonderworld will open,” Yuji Naka has explained.
The playable protagonists are Leo and Emma. After they meet with Balan, they are welcomed into the land of Wonderworld and must rescue its inhabitants. Both playable characters can use various costumes, outfits, and disguises.
Balan Wonderworld is set to be released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC in Spring 2021. There are free next-gen upgrades planned.
