Microsoft Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Hopes to Acquire Nintendo in Leaked Email
Phil Spencer, the Microsoft Gaming CEO, hopes to someday acquire Nintendo. Spencer stated in an email sent to Microsoft marketing executives “Nintendo is THE prime asset for us in Gaming” and “getting Nintendo would be a career moment and I honestly believe a good move for both companies. I’ve had numerous conversations with the LT of Nintendo about tighter collaboration and feel like if any US company would have a chance with Nintendo we are probably in the best position,”
Microsoft’s board of directors “has seen the full writeup on Nintendo (and Valve) and they are fully supportive on either if opportunity arises as am I.”
Spencer revealed he had talks with the leadership team at Nintendo about future “tighter collaboration.” Spencer also clarified Nintendo is in a place where the company doesn’t have to make any large deals such as a buyout due to “sitting on a big pile of cash.”
Spencer stated something would need to happen for this acquisition to be possible and “Without that catalyst, I don’t see an angle to a near term mutually agreeable merger of Nintendo and MS and I don’t think a hostile action would be a good move, so we are playing the long game,”
These emails were revealed as part of the leaked documents from the lawsuit between the FTC and Microsoft.
