  1. @Jassbec:

You just posted... one of... those vore, let's pretend I'm still innocent okay? things...
                                                        ^Hidden message here

    Shit just got real

(At least this time it makes logical sense because it's a mushroom)

  2. ...Wow. The hatred, vitriol and overall negativity here is astounding. I can see that this was the wrong place to ask for an opinion on this subject.

Frankly, I feel that I should remain the open-minded (though wiser) Sonic fan I've always been, if only to avoid the miserable alternative I've seen in this topic. Could one of the mods please close this? I'm done with it...and, honestly, this forum, too. I really don't belong here. -_-

(And Streak, I believe  I've already responded to you on deviantART.)

Well, first off, I didn't seem to get a notification for some reason... maybe you should try that again?

And second of all, it's to be expected with any community that has retro and gamer fans, and a place where 2D games are made usually translates into the fact that people aren't getting what they want in a Sonic game, so they're making their own. Retro fans are belligerent because they have a very specific definition of what a "sonic" game defines...

Just imagine if Sonic Boom or Shadow the Hedgehog weren't based on the Sonic IP. Sure the technical faults leave much to be desired, but they got needless hate for simply being labeled with "Sonic" on them, even if they weren't such bad games after all. (Though I must agree, '06 is just objectively bad). That's really the reason Sonic gets so much hate these days: the most influential and militant of Sonic fans believe that any deviation of "Sonic's purity" must be destroyed.

Sometimes it loops into hypocrisy, because people will complain if the mainstream Sonic games become too "dark and edgy" but ignore or even celebrate the dark themes of the comics. Those two fanbases are so distant and disparate that you probably won't find them in each others' communities, though a rough guess suggests most of you have read the comics.

From all of this and my own observations, I could group Sonic fans into three types: Those who only care about the games (call them "Gamers"), Those who care about the story and character designs (call them "Mobians"), and those who overlap both (and we can call these, "Fans").... though I may be wrong, or make really vague stereotypes... but hell, I'm sure it's pretty accurate.

The Gamers are those who want to play Sonic, but only as a video game; they won't be die-hard fans because they simply like the games, and if they don't like it, they're going to play other games. They're the most numerous outside the fanbase, because Sonic is just another game they've played instead of a fandom they're in. If they are die-hard Sonic fans, expect them to have a canon Sonic character as their avatar, and probably are retro fans. They're most influential because professional critics are in this camp.

The Mobians are those people making fanart and fanfiction, and usually have a Sonic-based character as their avatar. Some of them ship, some of them make fancharacters, and some just go along with their lives, but most importantly they all actually care about the characters and plot of Sonic franchises, whether it's the games, or the comics... but they might not actually play the games, or only a few. Some of these people, if they've had enough of Sonic, just become regular furries, but only some. Judging by my observations, I believe we mostly fit in this camp.

Then of course, are the Fans. Most of us are probably here. They are like Mobians but do focus on playing the games as well.

All of them can be crazy. We've discussed what crazy Gamers can do. Mobians can argue and flame over non-canon relationships and some even act like they're in a relationship with fictional Sonic characters. And Fans can be both.

The problem is the human element. So the solution is just to eliminate all humans to see our own problems, and what's so wrong with ourselves.

Eh, what am I to say, I don't even like platformers, and I wasn't even born yet in 1991. The reason I'm on this site is because I want to join a fangame community that solves its own problems enough not to complain all the time. Our fanbase is fucked, but not the franchise I suppose.

  3. My lord...One question though; why isn't everyone having 1 night stands with Eggman? :<

Serious note though; There this one issue of the comic where it's suggested Evil Sonic "did some things" with Sonic's ladyfriends to try and ruin his life.

Actual on topic discussion; Boom is teasing SonAmy. Archie is teasing SonAmy. The games are starting to tease SonAmy. Three parts, 1 general focus. My conclusion is: SonAmy is illuminati.

They just don't know 'bout his sexy, sexy 'stache... (but I'm sure all those rule 34s out there will prove you wrong)

It's good that Sonamy is being *teased* in Boom instead of being made blatant, it's more exciting for the fans.

  4. Know what's funny? It's weird when the same conversation happens across many places...

The creator himself gave us a version of his engine (requires the beta release 192), rejoice!

Apparently, in the words of the creator, the problems are with the physics engine more than the collision detection, and work could be done, but there is the link for experimentation.

  5. I don't care if the joke has been made. Keep the rape jokes off the forums. Not mad at you, just myself for missing an obvious oversight to the rules.

Well, at... least Amy proves the double standard need not apply

(Wait does that make me look like a fedora-wearer? I wear a pimp hat ***dammit!)

  6. Alright, I'm trying to see if I can make a Sonic game on Construct 2, but it doesn't have the pre-built Sonic engine like Gamemaker has. I mean, there was Sonic Construct Worlds, but the link is down... does anyone have it stored on their hard drive? If you could please kindly link a copy here, you would be doing the community a huge favor smile.png. Or, are the physics and platform behaviors adequate enough to be able to make a Sonic game? (If so, could you give a tutorial how to make it behave like a Sonic game?)

If not, does anyone have another Construct 2 Sonic engine they've made?

    Thanks

    EDIT: Right here, rejoice!

  7. Personally, it's because I'm like this very specific form of "furry" (does it even count) in that I just like the Sonic character designs. In fact, I grew up not on the games, or the shows, or the comics, but from... Newgrounds animations and Deviantart fanart... yeah.. In fact, I might not even count as a "real" Sonic fan because I actually don't like platformer games. Because of that I have this firm belief that Sonic is a thing by the fans and for the fans to make and enjoy, and this website seems to agree.

I could technically move on from the Sonic fandom and go on and make my own thing, but I'm just so entranced by the character designs that it activates my misanthropic subconscious to stop being a human for a second and become a hedgehog.

Sure, the fanbase is some of the most infamously broken of all, but so are a lot of things in 2015, from Star Wars, to Bionicle, among others... It's so broken that it's become fragmented into sub-fandom "factions" that don't squabble amongst each other, me being in the "edgy Sonic" camp", but this might not be a necessarily bad thing if Sega tries to cater to all the different types of fans. And it would seem, everything is going in all directions, which is good. Sonic Boom (the show is good, I deny the games' existence) is catering to fans, new and old, who want a comedic take on Sonic, the 2015 movie caters to "edgy" fans like me, and the games continuing on their thing, catering to the old fans. Not to mention, the comics which have a whole different fandom and even universe of their own.

The problem with Sega is that it's not trying to cater to some of the most influential and militant of all the Sonic factions, which are the die-hard retro fans, who want more of the Sonic they remembered, whom many critics are part of this . That's why I don't like Freedom Planet: it's draining away all the old, cynical retro fans because Sega isn't catering to them, so they have no more hope for Sega and look to others to get that 2D Sonic experience.

So what is the answer then? Communities like these are the answer. If we hate Sega for what they've done, then we make things for ourselves. Since I'm never going to see sonic characters with guns again, then I'll make my own.

Also, Ryan sir, I apologize if I contacted you at random, which may seem weird, but you never replied to me?

  8. Looks like I watched it. Wow... that... I really hope the next season will only go upwards in quality. It's really fitting as the finale... (before season break?)

The overall humor was great, but the best moments were really what made the episode great. My favorite one of the whole season is definitely the Knuckles cake scene, because it was so incredibly awkward I just cracked up while cringing. (Also that is one scene that will never, ever leave my head) The rest of the funny moments were great but I'd rather not spoil them so I don't ruin your humor.

Anyways, from this episode, it's clear to see what sort of humor the show will be laid out: a basic premise filled with lots of funny moments. The humor is witty and snarky, and reminiscent of humorous Sonic flash animation, like Sonic Uncut and Sonic Shorts.

I'm personally really excited for 2015, with the next wave (season?) of Sonic Boom, and the upcoming Sonic Movie, and as I said, I really hope the show only gets better through time.

Oh, and double post trololololololol but seriously tho, it would be awkward on an existing post

  9. You might be into Ergo Proxy then Streak, I dig that one a bit. Check it out maybe!

Sci-fi anime with politics, drama and philosophy?! Where do I begin?

  10. The only anime I've ever "really" watched was Elfen Lied. Yeah... we all probably know what that is... but it's got a really good, emotional plot man!

I'm trying to look for political sci-fi anime and manga, preferrably some with little bits of revolutions and giant mechas etc. but I don't know what or where to watch them...

And where I live, you have to watch anime if you want to be in the norm (I'm in Asia after all), not the other way round...

  11. Hm?  What about?

Ohh... you know... we're talking about engines... and... you always keep talking about... you know...

Let's just say, "why are you not surprising?"

Only downside to Unreal is that you end up having to get the actual engine/game as well.

What do you mean by that? As in, you have to get the game to get the engine? But UDK is free...

  12. Addendum:  If by source code you mean stuff people have written for the engine, there's a lot out there, but as I mentioned there will be issues with it.  You can have it cheap, good, or compatible.  Usually not any combination of the three unless you do it yourself.

Hm, that's interesting. Yes, I meant scripts and games that have openly modifiable and copiable source code. I know UDK has quite a lot, but compared to Unity.

Oh, and yes Ell, I know you can make just about anything with any engine (well, most anyways...), but since I'm not a programmer myself, I'm mostly looking for an engine that wouldn't be too much of a burden to other programmers.

  13. Yeah, I've checked it out. I'm... by no means... a programmer myself, but I understand these things.

Hmm, what about the best engine judging by the amount of source code flying about compared to the others? I mean, for now UDK is superior for Sonic due to the Sonic GDK that was made, but what about other pieces of source code, say, strategy or RPG?

  14. Give us a couple screenies of your models, animation and writing and someone (including myself) might be interested. Alternatively just link your deviantart so we can see all of it.

I'm... not advertising myself juuust yet for the sole reason my own portfolio isn't decked out as I plan it to be, but you might, so go ahead.
