  1. ...what the hell is wrong with you? =Smidge=
  2. Azu: Define "Download thing" Also, for those who care, more complete statistics: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Looking into it, the forum uses about 130-150 MB/day of bandwidth. =Smidge=
  3. I've seen people autioon off nothing before. Literally nothing. As in, "You are bidding on absolutely nothing." It's amazing the things people would rather have than money. (Smidge's Coworker asks: "I wonder if it's autographed?") =Smidge=
  4. N.... no. This is spam. *locks* =Smidge=
  5. It's been a little over 24 hours since I installed some logging code into the scripts on SFGHQ's main site. Let's see what we came up with! 23 hours 57 minutes 13 seconds in sample period 4701 logged entries (non-unique page requests across the entire site) 342 unique IP addresses ~860MB of bandwidth used (785MB was ZIP files) Approximately 6 minutes 17 seconds of CPU time used processing scripts. view_info.php seems to be the most computationally expensive (Average 110ms per view), closely followed by sprites.php. Optomizing view_info.php (which is also the most accessed file, used by all sections of the site) would likely reap the most benefits. I love numbers... though take these with a grain of salt, since the logging system and processing methods are very crude. Should be "good enough" though. =Smidge=
  6. Well, I typically shop Newegg, but I'm not afraid to assemble stuff myself... I'm not sure if you're the type to do the actual assembly though. For reference, earlier this month I put together this system as an experiment. $620 for what is a pretty powerful system. Minus, of course, a monitor. =Smidge=
  7. The Intel Duo, while a great performer, is still too 'new' IMHO. As a personal preference I'd go with AMD's best dual-core offering, even though it doesn't performa as well it still performs really damn good and the prices have been dropping thanks to Intel. Having been available for awhile also means there are lots of mainboards out there at good prices. It would help, though, if you could break down the prices for each item. =Smidge=

  9. He might not be able to do much, but I can do a bit more. Quit being a complete ass. SRB2 is very popular despite your apparent distaste for it. =Smidge=
  10. This is incorrect for two reasons. First, "fluids" include both liquids and gasses. Second, there are very few materials that decrease in density when transitioning from a liquid to a solid. Water is by far the most famous, but only materials that have a defined crystal structure which is lss dense than the liquid state will expand. This includes silicon, for example. =Smidge=
  11. My boss put a can of soda in the freezer part of the fridge in our office. It's one of those half-height ones, so the "freezer" is just a metal box in one big insulated cavity. Because of the size, he laid the can on its side. This was a friday. Over the weekend, the top of the can had burst off, and the can hit the door hard enough to open it. Quite a mess to discover on a Monday... Fun fact: When the soda actually freezes, it drives the carbonation out of solution. This, plus the slight expansion of the water, causes the pressure in the can to build up. The slightest defect in the can will cause a rupture. Plastic bottles fair better because the plastic stretches easier. =Smidge=
  12. 21 registrants now. Still, 40 is a historical average. =Smidge=
  13. Don't but anything from Radioscrap if you can avoid it. Be more specific about the requirements and application. =Smidge=
  14. *Ding!* tentril gets a cookie! I'll be honest, that sprite comic was perhaps the most pristine example of "something that took you a minute in MSpaint" to make. And please don't say "All my topics" - you've only made two. Well, three counting this one, which I am in fact going to lock. Try not to take it personally, though. You *should* have received a private message when your topic was locked that told you who did it (and why if they entered a reason). In the future please try to deal with that person or another mod/admin directly. =Smidge=
  15. The way I see it; his plan for SAGE isn't panning out schedule-wise. I believe he is relying on someone else to the graphical design but he completed the coding/backend. At any rate, whenever I try to contact him it seems he's neck deep in his own work. I've given up trying to force it on him since he's apparently busy with "real" things, but it doesn't seem like he will be finished in a timely manner. So I'm essentially forcing the issue with "Plan B." Unfortunately Koray isn't the only one that's gotten off schedule, and there has been no promotion that I know of except for the main site, this forum and the somewhat cryptic message AJ put on sagexpo.org... so things are looking not-too-good right now. We currently have 14 registered booths. I'm thinking of delaying SAGE until the 23rd or 24th and running it through until the 31st. This will give me a precious few days to get the word out. I still don't have any buttons or banners for people to link with yet! (Guess I'll work on that tonight...) I hate doing things last minute. I seriously f***ing hate this. =Smidge=
  16. *bump* You have 5 days left, guys. Hurry up and register. =Smidge=
  17. Uh, no. He can open the ZIP file fine. What he needs is Multimedia Fusion, which all the tutorials are created in. =Smidge=
  18. Just a friendly reminder, since I'm getting the impression that not everyone got the news: SAGE Registrations are currently being accepted: http://www.sagexpo.org Please register by Monday, August 21st. SAGE opens on August 24th and will close on the 31st or thereabouts. =Smidge=
  19. Intel's latest Duo offering seem to blow AMD procs away on every benchmark I've seen. This has also driven the cost of AMD products down. Right now, the best bang for the buck still seems to be something in an Athlon 64 X2, but only because the motherboards for the newer Intel lines are still more expensive. I've heard stories about some existing motherboards being compantaable with the new Intel stuff though. =Smidge=
  20. ...but I am the end user! Therefore, the real argument is marketing - people want to hear that they are getting the best, not something that's 6 months obsolete. =Smidge=
  21. Remember 32-bit software will run perfectly fine on 64-bit hardware. This is why 64-bit architectures are probably not a bad investment - they are useful for all your old stuff, and is ready to run new stuff as it's available. @Koray: Optical drives are not useless Also, I personally don't want to invest in anything that hasn't been on the market for at least 6 months or so. Not only does the cost generally drop a fair amount, and there's no sense trying to keep up with the bleeding edge tech, but there always seems to be one or two tweeks that get made that makes buying the first devices off the line a little more risky. =Smidge=
  22. There is nothing inherently better about a 64-bit CPU, however it's more "future proof" (won't become uselessly obsolete as quickly). CPU - Good. Especcially with that combo deal. Mainboard - Not bad. See warning about video card, though. RAM - You'll want more for a gaming rig. Video card - WARNING! This card is PCI Express x16, but the Biostar Mainboard does not have a PCI Express slot. Select either a mainboard that has a PCI Express slot, or an AGP video card. Sound card - Not bad, but the Mainboard you selected has onboard sound. If you don't have expensive sound equipment, or don't deal with high-end audio softeware, this is likely to be a waste of money. Use your descretion... Now... I've been playing a little game about once a month... I try to build the best PC for under the least amount of money. Here's the one I built yesterday which just happens to use Newegg stock: Case w/ 350W PSU: $24 MSI Mainboard: $77 GeForce 7600GS/256MB Video card: $109 Dual core Athlon 64 3800+ CPU: $153 2 GB RAM: $139 250GB SATA HDD: $78 DVD+/-RW drive: $29 Keyboard + optical mouse: $10 Total: $618.88 Complete details: http://smidge204.homeftp.net:84/TheoreticalPC02.htm Since I came in under my $700 budget, I might as well add this badass heatsink to the deal. =Smidge=
  23. <-- Often irritated, never duplicated. Accept no substitutes! =Smidge=
  24. It would also be painfully obvious =Smidge=
