  1. Honestly, animation speeds and sound effects aren't nitpicky in the slightest, especially considering that the sonic 2 re-release is a remake. It's not a remix, it's a 1:1 remake, and something like awfully noticeable animation differences and sound  modulation should be taken care of. The Taxman remakes are NOT fangames, they are official Sega products.

As for normal fangames. If sonic is running EXTREMELY fast, and his legs aren't moving very quick at all, then that's strange, and should be corrected. Something like that is so simple to fix and is a core part of the original sonic games.

As for sound... The spindash sound not modulating is no big deal, not every engine can do that. As for the quality of sound effects themselves... There is no excuse to NOT have HQ sound effects in a fangame in this day and age. There's plenty of resources out there.

I thought you were talking about something minimal. I agree with you that the art direction should match. An animation should look like it's in time with the action happening. You're also right about sound quality. There should be no excuse for low quality assets nowadays given the accessibility of high speed internet connections and content out there.

I was also referring to fan games, not recreations. Even then, minor differences on animations or sounds wouldn't really be a problem as long as the gameplay isn't drastically affected by it. At that point, it's just a purist thing if it's not 1:1.

  2. I'm sure, like, 98% of players would never notice any of those inconsistencies. They still play the same.

Pretty much this. While it's true a lot of fan engines have inaccuracies, does it really matter? Playability is always the most important aspect of the engine. Worrying about details like animation speeds or sound effects seems really nit picky to me.

However, I can't say I don't take a slight joy in playing terribly bad engines. It's really funny to see what happens when someone has little to no grasp of game design.

Overall: Fan Games are for creative people that want to simply make a speical Sonic Game.

Lazies are recommended to go hacking.

I feel the need to contend this only a bit. I wouldn't call ROM hacks lazy, necessarily. A good hack still takes a substantial amount of effort.

To answer overall, I'd be more likely to play fan games. While ROM hacks offer an "authentic" experience, I like to see more creativity from people.

  3. The Sonic series has basically been schizophrenic up to this point. As Serephim said, the Mario series found a working formula. Sonic is either worried too much about relevance or stagnation that it can't find its comfort zone. The Sonic series worries far too much about trying to reinvent the wheel instead of finding something that works and expanding upon it.

  4. Okay, it's time for another bump. Although it hasn't quite been five years, here's something I'm working on currently for a Line 6 Insane Mixing Contest. For those of you who don't know, Line 6 Insane is joked about as being one of the most unusable guitar settings ever. Unusable? I think not!

Genre is metalcore. No vox yet (I should be getting them next week).

  5. Hidden Palace Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Why? Because it's the level that got me interested in game development. When I first heard there were levels we never got to play, it made me want to research more into it and development cycles in general. Don't like that answer? Fine. Flame Core from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). How many other levels in the franchise sound like they can be a new sub-genre of metal? Yeah. Didn't think so.

  6. Way late into the topic, but I'll just throw in my two cents.

Look forward to the game, couldn't care less for the TV show. The character designs seem fine. The bandaging and stuff seem like a response to the modern trend of over design. A shame, really, but I welcome a radical shift to the series. I'm not into hype so I don't have much more to say until I actually get it. Overall the game play will speak for itself for me.

  7. The biggest problem I had with Sonic the Hedgehog was the control. The story and cut scenes, I could care less about. People who are into that sort of thing complain about it a lot, but the control is bad. The most important part of a game is actually being able to play it. The PS3 version handled a little better than the 360 version, but they're difficult to control either way. Sad, really. I looked forward to a new Sonic game when it came out, but what we got was just rushed cash-in.

  8. Mods, if I posted this in the wrong forum, I apologise. Wasn't sure if it should go in SEGA or Video Game Discussion.

So, I have a Sega Dreamcast with a third party VGA adapter. It connects via VGA and RCA audio. No RCA video is available. I had to replace my TV and while I love it, I no longer have a VGA input. I'm considering getting this:
    http://www.amazon.com/HDE-Audio-1080p-Converter-Adapter/dp/B009L4X3ZA/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1413562495&sr=1-6&keywords=VGA+to+HDMI
...but some of the reviews make me nervous. So, my question to you guys is what have you done in this situation? What luck have you had with VGA to HDMI/Component adapters? Has anyone tried this product out specifically?

Edit: Well, I just got a gift card from Amazon, so I think I'll just pick it up and let you all know how it is if you're interested.

  9. However, once the preorder numbers (and possibly the investors) started talking, they backpedaled so hard that they pretend it was all for "the consumers".

I agree with you that there was pressure coming from somewhere. I did forget about the 360 comment until you mentioned it, which is odd cos it really annoyed me when I heard it.

I don't trust them as easily. Windows 8.1 may have the Start button back, but read that again: button, not menu. They could reinstate this bullshit anytime with an update, and even though this now means Xbone will be supported anywhere and not just Brazil here in SA... it's still not convincing me.

I have a fear that's going to happen too. Windows 8 is a whole other topic, but it's a huge mess. It was actually the final straw for me and convinced me to switch to Linux nearly exclusively. I do have a Windows 7 partition music for music production. A lot of the software doesn't work well with Wine.

Sony ain't the perfect angels either - we don't know for sure if they were planning to DRM the shit out of the system and just took a step back because of lol Xbox DONE. I'm still amazed at how they recovered from the PS Notwork fiasco.

Like I said, I didn't expect Sony to be any different either. It made me excited that they ended up not going with the same policies, but I still have my reserves.

Xbots are all lol'ing about the PS+ requirement for online, and while they do have a point this probably means the network will be more stable and hopefully have its user data NOT ON FUCKING PLAINTEXT. Some games will apparently be online even without PS+ (I suppose it'll be light games with 1 vs 1 like systems that don't make great use of the servers or something), not 100% sure on that.

The change could be a bit concerning, but it's honestly not a huge ordeal for me. I already pay for PlayStation Plus, and if I am to get a PlayStation 4, I would probably continue to do so.

As for Wii U, it starts to be more convincing, but not enough. Needs more third party glory.

This is one of the issues for me too. While I do enjoy my first party Nintendo games, I started to get burnout by the GameCube. I never finished Super Mario Sunshine or Twilight Princess to this day, despite my attempts to do so. I'm surprised I finished SSE on Super Smash Bros. Brawl, to be honest, but I found Melee to be a better game overall.

I recommend people to just wait a lot before getting any system. It's way better when new slimmer, cheaper versions are out along with cheaper games. Believe me, it's not that hard to resist playing the latest generic shooter or whatever. Just be careful with spoilers...

I mostly agree. I typically don't like the slim versions of consoles. I usually wait for their first price drop to buy, which usually happens before their next generation comes out, anyway.

Spoilers aren't a huge concern for me. If I care about a game's story, it's all about the journey, not the destination for me. It is nice not to know, sometimes, though.

For instance, my friend bought me Fallout 3 for Christmas one year. It was about a year after their huge hype about Fallout 3 was over. It was a very pleasant surprise with the DLC. I'll just leave it at that.

Like I said, I doubt I'll be getting into this generation until something comes out that I really want. I have plenty of games on all the consoles I need to finish, so I'm not hurting for entertainment. I agree with your post for the most part, and I share the sentiment that people should be cautious before entering the next generation.

  10. I'm still not into it. The fact that you have to register each game online with the console before you play it seems a bit fishy to me.

You could say we're already doing that with online passes. It seems developers are wanting more and more product control. Although, I guess EA recently have been realising online passes were a bad idea.

It's good that the consumer voices were heard, but it doesn't mean I suddenly changed my opinion of the XBone. Microsoft tried to get away with its completely unfriendly DRM. I'll be honest, I didn't expect Sony do have much different approach to DRM, so it did make me excited when they announced the PS4 wouldn't have the restrictions XBone was going to.

As it stands, I mostly play on PC anyway. It's quite apparent devs aim toward consoles and not PCs when developing, so my hardware hasn't come close to being maxed out on any modern games I want to play. I doubt I'll be buying into the next generation until some console exclusive I really want is released.

I rarely play my PS3 and I almost never touch my 360. I'm pretty sure I haven't touched a Wii in three years, now that I think about it. Although, I admit that Nintendo's line-up made me re-consider getting a Wii U. I sincerely doubt I would, though, once I remember the tablet-controller things. No matter what, I wouldn't be getting into the next generation until 2015 at the earliest, if I do at all.

  11. Actually I did at some point kinda tinker with music like that! I've kinda run the gamut a little here and there. My soundcloud has some older electronic/rock stuff and my old bandcamp has a loooot more, as well as some straight up rock. I used to do some ska-punk esque stuff a loooong time ago and other shitty punk/rock music back in my teens haha.

Been wanting to delve into using my guitar again though, but I am not much of a shredder. I kinda base my guitar playing style off this band when I do play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMWuyyXgQgo

I didn't have a lot of time to listen to some of your older songs on SoundCloud, but I did listen to Phantom and Clear Skies and they're closer to what I was expecting. Phantom more so. What were you using for guitar tones? They would probably sound better with a little bit of tweaking. Lord knows they're better than my old tones. Haha.

You don't really need to shred, especially in music like this. It's nice to have some power chords as some fill-in or some basic leads. I think we all dealt with a shitty punk phase in our teens. :P

Also I forgot this... It's free/pay what you want.

I'll probably pick this up later. Thanks!

  12. Thank you!! Glad you like it. I am curious though, what were you expecting :3? I've never really had anyone have an expectation of what music I made before so I am just kinda curious as to what sort of vibe I give off compared to what I actually ended up making haha.

What I was originally thinking was some sort of rock and electronic music; something almost reminiscent of the PlayStation Mega Man X trilogy soundtracks. That's the kind of music that hits me based on your art. I like chip stuff too though, so I wasn't upset that I was off the mark. :)
