  1. Haha thanks dude, the only thing is I don't actually have a game. I just tend to make up loads of concepts, but no game to go with it. I don't really have the time to dedicate to putting together one right now. I've been working a lot of hours at my day job and my days off have been filled lately with other stuff to do :/.

  2. really rough early demo of a boss theme (it needs a lot of cleaning up since some parts are messy/cluttered). I might also change some instruments too. But its a solid direction/start at any rate.

and an even rougher one I threw together one night.

and a non videogame 90s rock inspired jam I've been kicking around.

no visual art though to post I've been on a music kick in between work lately 'cause I've been in and out of downer mode.

  3. Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3 - both of which were mega hyped to me by other people (and in the case of Fallout 3 I was personally mega excited as well) only to be total letdowns that I ended up returning both and getting other games. It is quite rare that I let myself get really disappointed by a game after I've bought it but those two did it in. I really did try giving Fallout 3 a chance though, I played a lot of it before I finally just said "fuck this". As for a game I rented once I was playing Final Fantasy X, the first FF game I'd ever actually tried due to all my friends saying how amazing it was and couldn't get into it. I played around 30 hours before I finally stopped and ended up returning it to Blockbuster. Just typing that out feels weird....blockbuster...rentals...what the fuck man.

Other than that I can't really name too many games I found myself being disappointed with on a large scale that I was totally turned off from them. I tend to do my research first to ensure I like a game and have done so since I was a kid. Even games that otherwise are critically panned I end up finding myself enjoying if the concept is something I enjoy - Neverdead for example I really like despite being an extremely rough game.

There is a Mega Man Gender Swap collab going on through tumblr/twitter and who am I to say no to drawing robo girls.

I picked Shadow Man 'cause I thought I'd have a lot of fun with the design, and I sure did. Incorporated elements of the Classic and EXE incarnations and then hid in a few nods to my other characters and made it my own. Really thrilled with the end result.

  5. This looks pretty wicked so far dude. I love how even though you're showing the obligatory 'green' level, the more Angel Island kind of vibe really differentiates itself from the others that generally get posted. The fact that it gives me more of a Sonic 3&K feeling too is awesome as a lot of fangames around here I find tend to lean towards Sonic 1/2/CD while 3&K is my fave in the series :>

  6. Sonic plots have pretty much always sucked aside from the old-school titles I guess (if they qualify as having plot haha). I mean not that the classic titles were some shining paragon of storytelling, but it was always simple enough - Eggman is building a giant Death Star knockoff go stop him. Sonic 3 and Knuckles gave you -just- enough of a hint of progression to make you want to keep going. When I was younger I used to enjoy the stories of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 and subsequent games, even at a point in my teens when I was like "Sonic 06 is so COOL!" (the darkest period of my life). The thing is now that I've grown older I've formed the opinion that those stories absolutely suck (as well as the games themselves kinda but that's another topic altogether). The writing is poor and incredibly cliche, turning a game about a blue hedgehog who runs fast through a whimsical world into a soap opera. It really wasn't the greatest move - although to its credit Sonic Adventure 1 at least tried to be a mix of that and more real world sensibilities.

However things post Sonic 06 haven't been the greatest either. I didn't mind some of the shallow dialogue and stuff from Sonic Colours at first - mostly because I felt it was a nice needed change of pace to have a simple plot and some different character personality traits getting the limelight. While some of it felt forced it was never truly overbearing until we get to the travesty of Lost World and it's completely unfunny, stupidly written plot with the blandest characters this series has seen in a long time. We all complain about getting one crappy new character in a new game but here we are with 6 of them and they all suck. I omit Generations from the list because c'mon let's be honest here it was a game built to be a glorified level select as a tribute to the series' history and I'm pretty sure we all knew that going into it. Sonic Boom seems to be continuing this trend of "horribly unfunny sonic" and I can't tell if I like that better or the melodramatic Sonic because I kinda don't care for both?

As for whether or not the games need good plots - sure why not. Why not have decent writing. If you're gonna put it in there you might as well make sure it's good or what is the point? There is definitely a lot you can do with this franchise, none of it has to be deep or complex or on some sort of grand scale just for it to be good - merely it needs to be entertaining. But I am not sure if Sonic Team has the know-how to make this series have a good plot since it's never been one of the series' strong points. I hate to bring it up because I'm not really a huge Mario fan but look at how well those games have done in entertaining the player on a paper thin plot, and when they do inject it with some sort of crazy plot (Paper Mario games for example) they end up being funny and entertaining. Sonic just has this aura no matter the era of trying too hard, although I guess in a sense that's been a part of the character's DNA since day 1 since he was the cooler alternative to what was out there. The series has a real lack of identity outside of its old trademark visual style and nobody knows what the hell to do with it because of that it seems. The thing is they need to just stop trying so hard, stop trying to reinvent the wheel as far the series goes and just hire better writers. I will add though the only writing in the series I've enjoyed consistently is whenever Eggman is involved.

  7. Started construction on a new zone, called Riverbank Retreat! More will be added soon, and when I have enough info about the zone, I'll be posting in the Edge of Darkness thread with more screenies.

For now, however, here's the first visual of the fourth zone!

(Parallax isn't programmed in yet, if one of you was about to mention that.)

Gotta agree with Pedro, gray by itself is a very boring shade to use. However if you want to still get away with having a gray look, you can always slightly tint it towards a certain colour. It will still give the impression that something is either gray or black or white etc, but it will be a lot more visually pleasing. It's why I never really use straight up gray anymore in my work unless the piece particularly calls for it.

For example here is a palette from Team Fortress 2 (which I've never played I just know they adhere to this):

The bottom on the blue side there we would look at and go "oh that is gray" but it isn't, it is very slightly a yellowish tint. Here is a tutorial I like as well regarding colours - http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm .

  8. The thing I liked about Pixar back then was that they generally were always making new stories, worlds, and characters for people to love. The exception to this being Toy Story which I feel was consistently good across all three movies and thus don't mind, because it had such a strong cast of characters to make it work (plus it is easy enough to have people really relate to). But I mean it just seems like they keep doing sequels or prequels to each of their old franchises and a lot of what they've been doing lately has been so hit and miss. So I'm not sure how I feel about The Incredibles getting a sequel, considering the first one was so good and I'm not sure how a sequel will stack up. I'll stay cautiously optimistic for it - but I kind of feel like Pixar has started becoming increasingly irrelevant and are seriously losing their touch.

  9. I haven't played this yet, but I gotta commend you on making an original ip here dude. I'll make sure to find some time to play this sometime this week/weekend to give you some feedback, I like seeing original ideas moreso these days just 'cause I'm kind of phasing out of Sonic. Good luck with the game!

  10. People need to get over the designs. None of them are bad, and this is a separate canon. In fact, it's not even canon. This is like sega's own little fan-game of sorts.

Think of Pedro's redesigns for that game he's working on. They're pretty much just as different as these designs are. But no one is complaining, they look fine; great, in fact.

If Sega redesigned sonic to what pedro did, people would FLIP. And for no reason either.

If I recall people had critiqued those as well, but you also do need to remember that a fan making a fan game - or a fan making works of any kind really - is that it doesn't have any repercussions on the franchise as a whole. These ideas will never be used or expanded upon in official media (thankfully because man it'd suck if all the porn people draw and write became official haha). Even if it is a sub franchise it is still the only thing we're getting for a bit and that's already been two games in a row now I've got little interest in - so of course I'm a bit peeved. The thing is neither you or I can also tell each other that the designs are 100% good or 100% bad - it all comes down to preferences and ours happen to be different. What you see as good designs for this is registering with me as "awful", but I do admit Tails and Amy are the only ones I don't find incredibly ugly although the general overall style really bothers me. I do admit the tone in some of my earlier posts makes it seem like I too was claiming it to be objectively bad when I should have made it more clear that I found it subjectively bad.

This isn't even specific to this game either - I found the Deadly Six to be incredibly boring designs and now I find these to be bad as well. I've hated the writing in the games as of late and the gameplay styles they've been testing out as I've stated before. It's just a long string of many other things that has this franchise moving in directions I don't particularly care for and just because some of us are negative about the changes doesn't mean people should just 'get over them'. It's not like I'm shitting on anyone's parade but my own, feel free to like this game all you want. But whatever, I'm just gonna stop posting in these Sonic threads on here because I don't want to start pissing in everyone's lemonade. I guess its just to be expected when having a negative opinion on the franchise when on a board for said franchise.
