  1. I started another music track for my album today. It's a character theme for Funeral - if it sounds slightly antagonistic it is because it is supposed to (even the name of the track sounds ominous). It is supposed to be a mix of heroic but still have something 'off' about it. It has a lot to go still on it, and I am gonna have to fit some guitar in there somewhere too.

It basically is like a mix of Mega Man and Phantasy Star Online to my ears, with a couple nods here and there to PSO actually as well.

Anyway have a listen to the first demo here.

It is that time of the year (again)...

    24 HOUR COMICS DAY

It is one of my favourite times of the year from an artistic standpoint. I have done it every year since 2010 and have pretty much consistently failed. Last year was the first year that I decided to stream my 24hr comic as I drew an action packed tale about a demon princess in the underworld who had to fight the evil Judge Boner and there was lots of big letdowns to be had artistically in front of EVERYONE. But it was a lot of fun and thus I am doing it again this year in a stream. Clicking the picture above will get you to my page - but the stream won't start until around midnight my time. I believe I currently sit in the Mountain Time zone.

Anyway just as a refresher here are all the previous years I did this. Its like looking at a really distilled version of where I've been going the last few years artistically, though honestly 2012 is the one to beat imo. I had gotten the furthest along with it.

2010 - Aka the year Halo Reach was consuming me and I failed hard at this haha.

2011 - This was a spinoff of a comic I actually ended up printing one issue of in 2012. The spinoff actually came first as I did this while working on the main comic haha. This was the year I believe where I really started to absorb Takeshi Koike and Hiroyuki Imaishi's styles more, though this leans more on the Koike spectrum.

2012 - This is my personal favourite - I liked the characters I whipped up and at first I was trying something somewhat serious that devolved into something really stupid. Art wise it was the furthest I got in any of the years and I like the character (because duh she is a catgirl that is like my fave thing to draw or whatever).

2013 - This one had a lot of potential but I ended up taking a nap that lasted 5 hours and that is a lot of time to lose in this challenge. I liked the characters but this one turned into a really stupid comic. I mean it makes me laugh somewhat but I am disappointed I didn't get further haha.

    So yeah.

STAY TUNED TO WATCH ME FAIL GLORIOUSLY.

I've been pretty depressed so its been an ENTIRE MONTH since I've fucking drawn a thing and I'm paying the price now I guess. This took way longer than it should have - also I have 24 hour comics day to do on Saturday. I'll keep you all updated on where you can watch me stream that shit (I did it last year and it was kinda fun but super stressful at the same time lol).

  4. Cool then I'll wait for the next build then :). I've had a hell of a day at work so I wasn't going to be able to get to trying this one out tonight anyway. I'm really excited to (finally) play it though, I've been meaning to for a while but I've been insanely busy I haven't had a chance yet to check out a lot of projects going on here. I'll be rectifying that shortly and Spark is at the top of my list to play since I looooooooooooooove seeing non Sonic games around here :D!

  5. Just a suggestion but for your sprites you really should think about adding a lot more contrast. Heavier shadows etc, Salamon kind of looks like a big white blob with no depth just because all of his features are the same colour. Even his eyes kind of blend in with the rest of his face so it looks awkward. Bingo only slightly gets away with it just because he is made up of different colours but it still could be a lot better! In the end this is all up to you though but those are my suggestions.

Here is some good tips if you want :)http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11299&PID=139392#139392

    Best of luck!

  6. Hey!

I see from your profile you're just a kid, and while it is great that someone so young shares an interest in making a fangame, please try to make sure your posts have something of substance to show. The member base here (as Light is showing) can be pretty good at helping out but there is a tinge of tough love as well if you don't really know what you are doing. Since I don't really want to see you run into too much trouble around here I'd like to recommend taking a read through of these rules right here to get a better idea of what is generally expected of members here for maximum enjoyment™ of this board.

  7. Bigger models are less taxing by far. If you build a level out of "legos" then each lego has 6 sides assuming we're talking about rectangles. Where if you build a single large model you only draw the sides actually seen by the player.

Well as far as I understand (I went to school for 3D stuff but I haven't touched it in like 3 years so I've forgotten some shit) at the same time one big model for the entire level can be detrimental too. If the scale is extremely big you're going to want to have sections that aren't loaded in all the time and/or if an object is far away to have different LOD for them just to save on memory. I mean you can easily get an engine to only draw out the parts it needs to. As well as if you're modeling a level where say you will only ever see 3 sides of the lego why bother modeling the other 3 sides at all?  I mean I guess there are pros and cons to each but like I said I haven't touched 3D in about 3-4 years now.

  8. Cool to see a lot more non fangame projects cropping up a lot more frequently lately. I'll be keeping an eye on this topic for sure. I think its too early for me really to give any other feedback beyond that so keep at it dude.

  9. I've said it in the status updates, and I'm saying it again here - Nintendo is really pulling an Apple here (and dare I say it they have been for a long time). I get that it is normal for companies to release new versions of their consoles/handhelds at some point down the line but the frequency at which Nintendo does it has really started to turn me off from ever wanting to buy a console from them right off the bat. They do it a lot more than their competition. Not to mention the fact that their consoles tend to be a really slow burn for games unless you are really invested in their first party titles, which do almost nothing for someone like me aside from the occasional Zelda game and maybe Pokemon here and there.

I am also particularly wary of the fact that they are offering this half-assed upgrade of a 3DS that promises more power etc and eventually will only have games that it can play. It's not a full fledged system successor but they're sure trying to almost treat it like that, but if we all remember the abysmal start the 3DS had compared to where it is now I am wondering why they are choosing now of all times to make this. The 3DS is really just hitting its stride now, but even then I'd claim it is still in a rough patch for games. This generation has been pretty awful for the handheld market unless you're a mobile phone really. The thing is, I know some people who just shelled out their money to get some limited edition of a 3DS that comes out that has whatever their favourite game styled on it and now they go and do this. Not to mention they still have upcoming bundles for certain games and special editions of the 3DS that haven't even hit yet and they're pulling this.

I am awaiting the inevitable 2DS version of this upgrade for those kids who just got their 2DS because Nintendo made that just for them.

Also what the hell is their gameplan for brand identity? They have so many brands under the same name with slight differences and/or a completely different brand with such a similar name it's going to cause people to be confused. Parents will go in expecting to buy a cheap 3DS which is the old model and NEWGAMEHERE that only works on this new model only to find out their kid can't play it. It's going to happen. I mean there was confusion over the Wii U and that was an entirely new system, I wonder what is going to happen with this lazy upgrade.

Since the start of the Wii's launch I have become more and more frustrated with this company - I used to love them a lot. But the degree at which they continually pull the wool over everyone's eyes while pretending to be the nice guy while slowly rolling out the same shit we've come to expect from other companies is a lot more despicable to me than the companies who at least don't try and hide the fact anymore haha. I get it - they're a business and they aren't your friend but its a damn shame for me personally to see it happen with them. They used to be so genuine too. But I mean I should have seen this coming ages ago haha...

  10. Okay

    1) Please don't double post in these types of topics. Double posting in your own fangame topics or whatever is fine as long as you have some content to update the thread with, but elsewhere it's kind of a no-no.

    2) This is a general note to everyone - these kinds of topics have been increasingly more common lately so if you're going to make one then please have some more content in the post. Explain why something is your favourite and for the love of Eggman how many of these types of topics do we reasonably need haha?

Anyway just so I add something of worth to this topic I'll give you guys my all time favourite Sonic level.

Probably a strange pick since a lot of people hate water levels, but I love the hell out of Hydrocity Zone. I love the aesthetics of the level, not to mention the music is amazing (which as the video shows is ripe for badass mixes). It also is a very vertical level, with a lot of those tall corkscrew things that take you above and below water at blistering speeds that when I played it for the first time as a kid it really blew my nuts off. Then again I'm pretty partial to water levels which is another unusual thing among the fandom. I think Hydrocity Zone was also the first time as a kid where I actually got freaked out playing a Sonic game, thanks to that wall at the start of act 2... although Sonic 3 in general scared me at times because Marble Garden had a segment kind of like that too!

  11. I was all ready to make a snarky comment in here since I thought the topic was gonna be about this port:

    270px-Sonic_Genesis_GBA.jpg

In which I was just gonna recommend the Sonic The Hedgehog port on the 3DS if you wanted your handheld Sonic 1 Nintendo Experience or whatever. I think asking for an HD release of the old genesis trilogy is something a lot of people have asked for over the years - myself included. I'd honestly be 100 times more interested if they were to release something like that these days - I haven't particularly cared for any of their titles they've announced/released after Generations.

  12. Here comes a post of all kinds of not my art, but its worth sharing anyway.

Yeah I'm hugely inspired by the works of Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill La Kill):

    tumblr_ms9hi98yuU1rl3tlpo1_500.jpg

Takeshi Koike (not sure if this specific frame was drawn by him, but its hard to find just stills of his art on the net lol - but this was the movie he made called Redline):

    redline2.jpg

As well as Toru Nakayama (best known from the Mega Man Zero series, though I have no idea what this image is from other than he drew it and its RAD AS FUCK):

Non japanese influences include the likes of :

    Joe Madureira:

    James Stokoe:

    stokoe-spidernam-04.jpg

    And more I'm probably forgetting.

I've got elements of each in my style, or at least some of the styles I've used at SOME POINT or another. Looking at my work from 2011 to my work now I lean a lot more now towards the Gainax/Studio Trigger sort of style than I did back then. But all of the people I've posted here you can find bits of each in my work.
