Christian Whitehead, the lead developer of Sonic Mania, has revealed a cancelled 2.5D Classic Sonic prototype. While not confirmed, this does appear to be the cancelled sequel to Sonic Mania by Evening Star. Whitehead has posted two screenshots and concept art for an enemy.

It is now the 8th anniversary of Mania so time to dig up some Sonic trivia… This year, it’s Kanga Clanga! (aka the Kangus). This lovable robo-roo originally lived in the outback but now entertains us all in Pinball Carnival Zone!

Christian Whitehead, lead developer of Sonic Mania, reveals a cancelled 2.5D Classic Sonic prototype.

Unfortunately, the highly anticipated Sonic Mania 2 by Evening Star didn’t come to fruition. Evening Star instead developed an original title, Penny’s Big Breakaway, which is a momentum based 3D platformer partially inspired by the SEGA Genesis Sonic titles. Sonic Superstars developed by Naoto Ohshima, Sonic’s co-creator, is SEGA’s next instalment in the Classic Sonic line of games.
