What is your favorite zone gimmick?

11 posts in this topic

Every zone in the Sonic series has had some sort of gimmick to them to seperate itself from all the other zones this series hosts. There are such zone gimmicks like Marble Zone's pushable blocks and the casino levels' flippers and bumpers. And lets not forget the horrors that are not Carnival Night Zone's barrels. So what are you favorite zone gimmicks you came across? Which one do you think is the most fun or clever?

If we include Mania, I have a laundry list of them.

As for Sonic 2, I'd have to side with the pinball of Casino Night Zone. It's one of the only levels where you can just stick in one spot fooling around and have something to do (and rings to be won/cruelly spikeballed away). Later taken to the next level by Sonic Adventure, with Casinopolis and its fully-fledged pinball machines. That game just tried everything, and that was one of the most successful experiments.

Yeah I can relate with your opinion. The fact that you can basically feel like a pinball in Casino Night was a really nice addition to the zone.

The Death Egg gravity stuff, it's something that you don't see often and rarely done that well.

Funny how Sonic Spinball had a garbage engine. All you had to do was take the same engine they'd built for the main series, but apparently we can't have nice things. I get it was a different developer, but...why?

Internal politics (STI vs Sonic Team) is why.

Also, Spinball was quickly made as a stop-gap for the busy xmas season that year, as the next Sonic (3) was still going to take some time.

I've got a couple top contenders... though I haven't played Mania just yet.

1. Trampolines from Ice Cap Zone - I actually made a pretty decent approximation of this in my old Mad Cap Grotto Zone demo. I just love how freely you can interact with these and how snappy they are.

2. Anything involving sideways rotation of the character - ramps from Lava Reef are a good example. Also the spinning cages from Metropolis and Flying Battery.

3. Anything that moves that you hang from. Zip-lines, that mostly side-to-side chain thing from Launch Base zone, and I'm especially fond of a trapeze gimmick I made for Madcap Grotto that I never really put as much use to as I would have liked. I also programmed the bars that you hang from in the early Sonic Worlds demos and later added platform-style movement to them to exemplify this.

Well, not anything... the slowly vertical-moving hanging bars in Sky Sanctuary are kinda pointless.

Honorable Mention: Things that shoot you in a direction. Cannons from Oil Ocean are a good example. I like these, but have to admit that they aren't interactive and some of them drag on too long while taking control away from the player... the energy hoop things from Death Egg Zone being a prime example.

The zip-lines from Green Hill Zone are a neat gimmick in Sonic Mania. They are momentum based which make them a perfect fit.

I personally really dont like the cannons in Oil Ocean. They dont make you feel fast and are just a bad excuse to literally shoot you around the zone in an unsatisfying way.
