Sonic Cartoons/anime and why we love/hate them

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to track down the old old sonic anime movie in digital form but haven't had much luck. Do you still happen to have that webspace dump of all things animated sonic related?

EDIT: I own the VHS of this movie, don't think anyone will try to white knight this thread, but let it be known I own the movie already.

I know BrainScratchComms did a commentary on it, and they linked to a YouTube video which, to my surprise was the whole movie... (They were commentating on that. They just gave out the riff-trax for the actual commentary.)

...I'll see if I can find it.

EDIT: Found it!~

Oh, and here's the riff-trax, if anyone want's it.

EDIT2: I'm currently downloading the movie from the link above, so if it gets taken down, hit me up. And just for your information, I do own the official VHS cassette. (It's white, pretty distinctive.)

Actually it looks like Netflix now offers AOSTH the first 20 episodes in order. It used to be out of order and random episodes. As I recall there was a season 1 and 2 both consisting of 20 episodes. They've at least got them in order now but still only 20 episodes.

In the end though if you want to watch any of the Sonic TV Just use YouTube.

Is this the one where Sonic fights Robonik? And Robonik's minions are the drilling robot and the chicken robot? And Sonic eats lots of chili dogs? That was my ish back in the day. Well, whenever I found it on TV. Which was basically never.

Looking back on the series, and having quick access to both, I actually find AoSTH more appealing now. Not sure why, but just the mindless nature of it is incredibly amusing to me. Also it didn't end on a fucking cliffhanger.

Same for me. I think it's because Satam takes itself seriously and I have grown up and can't take it seriously. Where AoStH the way I relate to the show is basically the same. AoStH was stupid then and it's stupid now.

For me SatAM's the best cartoon, had the best/most well developed characters, most thought out/mature story, best art direction/detail, it had some problems such as cheesy lines every now and then due to being an early 90's cartoon but for the most part it's awesome.

AoSTH apart from The Quest for the Chaos Emeralds and Dr.Warpnick episodes is completely unfunny and the animation is awful, characters like Tails are way to childish and have really cringe inducing lines, it's terrible, Robotnik is the only good thing in almost any episode.

Sonic Underground is basically SatAM except it doesn't do any of it as well and has terrible voices for Robotnik & Knuckles and those crappy songs, I think it's the worst of all the cartoons.

Sonic X is just modern sonic "we have boring humans now!", and then for several seasons they just animated the adventure games scene for scene and then somehow ended up fighting mechs in space at the end. At least the original Japanese version has bearable/respectable voice acting and music to listen to.

And the Sonic OVA/movie is okay, I wish they made more episodes and therefor a longer movie, like when they fly to Robotropolis, they could've come across hundreds of flying security drones that would've caught them so they have to go through the massive sparkling casino-esque city instead, where they could've met new characters/whatever. I think all the characters talk way too much/too fast, infact there wasn't a calm scene in the whole movie, and the writing was way too basic as well, I know it's for children but still.

I dunno' about that; from the implications of Metal Sonic/Sonic seeing under Sara's skirt, to Tails grabbing Sara's breasts, and that brief dream scene of Sara apparently breastfeeding Robotnik's kids, this movie was rather racy...well okay, Japanese social standards and American censorship and stuff sort of impedes that point, but still. :B

To me:

SatAM and pretty much anything that has to do with Archie-Sonic feels so...out of place. It's way too dark and it tries to give a bigger plot to a series of games that only work so well because they have the most basic of plots. For instance, they made Robotnik a very dark and super evil sounding villain that wanted nothing short of taking over the world and enslaving the inhabitants, when in most every other media, he was crazed and evil, but also really funny and childish.

Adventures captured the feeling of the games better by making Robotnik a comical, yet serious at times villain and keeping plot to a minimum. The Chaos Emerald sub-plot showed that a plot could exist in it, but other than those small things, it sucked just as much as SatAM.

Sonic X....No. I fucking hate Sonic X. It is an irredeemable piece of shit that should have never been created, much less picked up by 4Kids Entertainment for dubbing.

As for the OVA... This was one of the only ones I really liked, but I can't watch it more than once in a very long time period. (Like once every three months.) I can't stand the odd voice acting, I can't stand the corny lines that the english dub put in, and I can't stand how everything acts like it's on crack.

So...yeah. To me, Sonic just isn't cut out for animation. If I had to pick one, I would have picked the OVA or Adventures, just because they're an almost happy medium between the worlds that the genesis games put forth and their own, original worlds.

Sonic X's last season wasn't that bad...

This is more accurate, since I didn't get any of it when I was little (~7), but now I can catch it all without thinking.
