  1. I thought you were talking about something minimal. I agree with you that the art direction should match. An animation should look like it's in time with the action happening. You're also right about sound quality. There should be no excuse for low quality assets nowadays given the accessibility of high speed internet connections and content out there. I was also referring to fan games, not recreations. Even then, minor differences on animations or sounds wouldn't really be a problem as long as the gameplay isn't drastically affected by it. At that point, it's just a purist thing if it's not 1:1.
  2. Pretty much this. While it's true a lot of fan engines have inaccuracies, does it really matter? Playability is always the most important aspect of the engine. Worrying about details like animation speeds or sound effects seems really nit picky to me. However, I can't say I don't take a slight joy in playing terribly bad engines. It's really funny to see what happens when someone has little to no grasp of game design. I feel the need to contend this only a bit. I wouldn't call ROM hacks lazy, necessarily. A good hack still takes a substantial amount of effort. To answer overall, I'd be more likely to play fan games. While ROM hacks offer an "authentic" experience, I like to see more creativity from people.
  3. The Sonic series has basically been schizophrenic up to this point. As Serephim said, the Mario series found a working formula. Sonic is either worried too much about relevance or stagnation that it can't find its comfort zone. The Sonic series worries far too much about trying to reinvent the wheel instead of finding something that works and expanding upon it.
  4. Latest thing I did: https://soundcloud.com/shanestrife/carls-jr-in-c-minor Line 6 Insane challenge. It's actually not as bad of a distortion channel as everyone claims. Also, the URL is very misleading. It's definitely in C# minor.
  5. Okay, it's time for another bump. Although it hasn't quite been five years, here's something I'm working on currently for a Line 6 Insane Mixing Contest. For those of you who don't know, Line 6 Insane is joked about as being one of the most unusable guitar settings ever. Unusable? I think not! MP3: http://mus.thewaitingroom.org/Carl%27s%20Jr.%20in%20C%23%20minor%2020141023_173435.mp3 FLAC: http://mus.thewaitingroom.org/flac/Carl%27s%20Jr.%20in%20C%23%20minor%2020141023_173435.flac Genre is metalcore. No vox yet (I should be getting them next week).
  6. Hidden Palace Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Why? Because it's the level that got me interested in game development. When I first heard there were levels we never got to play, it made me want to research more into it and development cycles in general. Don't like that answer? Fine. Flame Core from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). How many other levels in the franchise sound like they can be a new sub-genre of metal? Yeah. Didn't think so.
  7. Way late into the topic, but I'll just throw in my two cents. Look forward to the game, couldn't care less for the TV show. The character designs seem fine. The bandaging and stuff seem like a response to the modern trend of over design. A shame, really, but I welcome a radical shift to the series. I'm not into hype so I don't have much more to say until I actually get it. Overall the game play will speak for itself for me.
  8. The biggest problem I had with Sonic the Hedgehog was the control. The story and cut scenes, I could care less about. People who are into that sort of thing complain about it a lot, but the control is bad. The most important part of a game is actually being able to play it. The PS3 version handled a little better than the 360 version, but they're difficult to control either way. Sad, really. I looked forward to a new Sonic game when it came out, but what we got was just rushed cash-in.
  9. Mods, if I posted this in the wrong forum, I apologise. Wasn't sure if it should go in SEGA or Video Game Discussion. So, I have a Sega Dreamcast with a third party VGA adapter. It connects via VGA and RCA audio. No RCA video is available. I had to replace my TV and while I love it, I no longer have a VGA input. I'm considering getting this: http://www.amazon.com/HDE-Audio-1080p-Converter-Adapter/dp/B009L4X3ZA/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1413562495&sr=1-6&keywords=VGA+to+HDMI ...but some of the reviews make me nervous. So, my question to you guys is what have you done in this situation? What luck have you had with VGA to HDMI/Component adapters? Has anyone tried this product out specifically? Edit: Well, I just got a gift card from Amazon, so I think I'll just pick it up and let you all know how it is if you're interested.
  10. Okay, you caught me. This is my desktop.
  11. Nothing special. It's just my name. I'm too uncreative to make a neat sounding username.
